Ch. 4: Wash-Out at the Goblin Cave and Arriving in Phandelver!

Dungeon Master (GM): ok, let's begin Following the goblins’ trail, you come across a large cave in a hillside five miles from the scene of the ambush. A shallow stream flows out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow dry path leads into the cave on the right-hand side of the stream.   Myriandor: Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: ""I'll go first this time"   Dungeon Master (GM): move Wuth's token to where the party goes then move the other tokens into that light he sheds that's solid wall where you moved mariandor   Myriandor: Myri should be able to see she has darkvision   Dungeon Master (GM): ok now for myri i think ok as you approach that spot arrows come flying out!   (To GM): 12     8 STEALTH  (2)   Myriandor: Can I do a Matrix Dodge :D   (To GM): 10     12 STEALTH  (2)   Oladia: :D     (To GM): 20     22 STEALTH  (2)   Dramin Stillfest: well i hope ur AC is high   Myriandor: Its not bad but the die roller has not liked me been down twice already   Dramin Stillfest: samsies   Dungeon Master (GM): ok 3 arrows were fired one one gerjo, one on arnie and one on vin   Myriandor: Does Myri see where they came from?   Dungeon Master (GM): vin was the only one suprised and does not get a dex check i need dex checks for arnie and gerjio   Myriandor: 8     8 DEXTERITY SAVE  (4) Arnie   Dungeon Master (GM): click on their token then click the quick reference button then click dexterity   Darmin Stillwater: 16     20 DEXTERITY  (3) Gerjio   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, let me guess that does not show the character's dex sigh   Myriandor: 12     8 DEXTERITY SAVE  (5) Gerjio   Dungeon Master (GM): 18 for arnie and 16 for gerjio so arnie is good so is gerjio so they dodge the arrow strike   Dungeon Master (GM): 19     10 DEXTERITY  (2) Vin   Shortbow on Vin Goblin #01 Attack:  12  |  9 Damage:  4  piercing   Dungeon Master (GM): Vin has AC of 12 so that is a hit! for 4   Myriandor: she’s down hehe   Dungeon Master (GM): arnie and vin came upon 3 goblins! do you run or attack them?   Myriandor: I say attack   Oladia: with no where to go but back across the river id say fleeing is not an option how many feet would you say they are from the party   Dungeon Master (GM): The stream is only 2 feet deep and cold. Range: 100ft / 400ft Strike Hits an AC of  19  |  17 For  7  Hit Points of Piercing Damage!   Dungeon Master (GM): ok a hit for 7   It seems that Goblin #02 -CH2 is defeated!   Start of Turn 1 for Arnie (14.18)   Arnie the Fighter, Attacks with the LONG BOW (6ft) with ARROW (18") at Goblin #03 -CH2 enemy! Range: 150ft / 600ft Strike Hits an AC of  10  |  24 For  9  Hit Points of Piercing Damage! It seems that Goblin #03 -CH2 is defeated!   Dungeon Master (GM): well you nailed all 3 guards here! Vin needs attention!   18     4 MEDICINE  (-1) Myriandor For Vin   Dungeon Master (GM): ok looks like she's bandaged up bleeding stops anyone have a heal spell left? does not look like it! Hi Kath! Vin is down right now but she lives   Vin: (Good morning y'all. Sorry, I slept in a bit.)   Oladia: morning:D   Vin: (And that is for the best since I will need to catch up.)   Dungeon Master (GM): Anyone want to search the bodies?   13     21 PERCEPTION  (1) Myriandor   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, while you certainly did not find anything hidden upon them you did find just like what you found on the ones that ambushed you on the Triboar trail: each one has a scimitar, a shortbow, quiver with black feathered arrows, a shield with a maw of sharp teeth, leather armor and nothing of value.   Myriandor: Myri would just toss it aside   Dungeon Master (GM): Area Description: On the east side of the stream flowing from the cave mouth, a small area in the briar thickets has been hollowed out to form a lookout post or blind. Wooden planks flatten out the briars and provide room for guards to lie hidden and watch the area. That is the reminder of what you see at this location when the bodies are searched   Myriandor: Its worthless junk just toss it I'm not going to carry it around   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "Obviously someone is organizing these vermin we need to find and kill them" Maybe have Wuth carry Vin until someone can heal her?   Dungeon Master (GM): she'll be in a coma for  5  turns (50 minutes) ok as Myriandor approaches those cavern stairs: Just inside the cave mouth, a few uneven stone steps lead up to a small, dank chamber on the east side of the passage.   Myriandor: More Gobs to exterminate?  
Dungeon Master (GM): You all smell the stench of animals here, along with savage snarls and the sounds of rattling chains greeting your ears!   Oladia the Elf Ranger scream for help rattling and trying to escape your chains   Dungeon Master (GM): from somewhere above the stairs the sounds come from   Myriandor: Too bad Vin is down she could probably calm them hehe   Myriandor: 18     6 ANIMAL HANDLING  (2) Paco Bedo to try to calm them   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, Paco goes up the steps to see 3 wolves snarling at him with chains attached to them, rattling. Each chain is attached to an iron rod driven into the base of a stalagmite. Ok Paco does calm them what does Paco do now that the wolves stopped snarling?   Myriandor: Looks around the room Anything else in here?   Dungeon Master (GM): Paco sees a narrow opening on the opposite side here, with what looks like rubbished mixed in with the stones   Oladia: Paco calmy walks thru checking the opening out   Dungeon Master (GM): ok he sees that it's like a shaft that extends at least 30 feet up. he sees light at the end of the shaft   Oladia: is there any thing else in the eastern cave of interest   Dungeon Master (GM): nope it is as you see and as i described   Myriandor: Can he tell if its maybe Sun light or fire light?   Oladia: Paco examines the walls and his surrounds looking for any markins or images   Dungeon Master (GM): ok the light does waver. There are no markings or images here on the cavern walls.   Myriandor: Is the shaft Gob sized or maybe Human sized?   Dungeon Master (GM): it's big enough for a human to get through   Oladia: we should leave her to rest and heal up in the bushes   Dungeon Master (GM): ok you certainly can do that   Myriandor: Yeah guess so, and march on   Gerjio the Tortle Ranger Picks up Vin and takes her over to the hidden guard post in the bushes and lays her down to rest.   Myriandor: Paco is probably the most sneaky so He will try climbing up the shaft   Arnie the Halfling Fighter Says: "We should be carefare as we have not seen what originally shot at arrows at us"   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, granted they did have bows in their hands when you engaged them!   5     14 ATHLETICS  (4) Paco Bedo Ok maybe not   Dungeon Master (GM): ok you climb to the top of the rubbish filled shaft here and spot 2 goblins and a bugbear here with a wolf in the room around a fire.   Myriandor: come back down not worth trying to have everyone climbing up there and get in the room   Dungeon Master (GM): ok getting down was easier than climb up   Oladia: can gerjo use tracking to see if there is a trail of the original gob archers   Dungeon Master (GM): yes   Gerjio the Tortle Ranger Starts surveying the area looking for evidence of where these goblins mioght have went to Did paco see the weapons the goblins had up the shaft   Dungeon Master (GM): you seen scimitars on there sides   Paco the Elf Ranger Says: "We should all sneak up into the northen part of the cave slowly and hug the wall"   Dungeon Master (GM): there are all kinds of tracks here, goblins obviously, along with dog tracks and bigger footprints   Myriandor: Lets keep going see what we find   Oladia: Wuth has a disguise in his inv can he carv the face of a goblin and disguis himself and walk in   Dungeon Master (GM): Not sure the disquise looks like that, maybe it hides the fact he dragonborn though. Ok anything beyond what i revealed appears to be in darkness for those that do not have infravision   Myriandor: March on North   Dungeon Master (GM): Area Description: The stream passage continues up beyond another set of uneven steps ahead, bending eastward as it goes. A waterfall sounds out from a larger cavern somewhere ahead of you. Give me a stealth check here, for everyone moving along the path   Myriandor: 4     13 STEALTH  (0) Myriandor   Oladia: 10     15 STEALTH  (6) Paco Bedo  
Myriandor: 10     16 STEALTH  (6) Paco Bedo   Oladia: 14 STEALTH  (2)   Myriandor: 6     22 STEALTH  (5) Gerjio   Oladia: 7 STEALTH  (2) that was for wuth   Myriandor: stealthy we are not   Oladia: CLink Clank our armour goers So it appears we are all cave dwelling in the darkness   Dungeon Master (GM): ok everyone but Oladia and Myri made some noise as they crept along who has a light source here? or just being guided by the infravision users?   Oladia: we have no light spells in our party? or a torch   Dramin Stillfest: do i roll stealth for darmin?   Myriandor: Wuth has light Myri has darkvision   Dungeon Master (GM): you can ok   Dramin Stillfest: 15     8 STEALTH  (3) i have darkvisison too   Dungeon Master (GM): Area Description: A rickety bridge spans the passage, connecting two tunnels that are 20 feet above the stream.   Gerjio the Tortle Ranger Says: "Quiet we should listen to see if there is anyone near by archers could be above"   Dungeon Master (GM): ok as you move closer to the bridge i need a surprise roll from myriandor   (To GM): 6     15 STEALTH  (2) Goblin   Myriandor: 7     11 WISDOM SAVE  (-1) Myriandor   Dungeon Master (GM): ok a javelin comes flying at Myriandor an she was surprised! ok well, the sheet does not even have a javelin (description says he does), so it's an arrow instead   Shortbow Goblin Attack:  19  |  19 Damage:  7  piercing   Dungeon Master (GM): that hit's Myri for 7 damage!   Oladia: lol Myri u didnt wanna dodge?   Dungeon Master (GM): The passage is suddenly filled with a mighty roar, as a huge surge of rushing water pours down from above! she couldn't due to being surprised   Myriandor: Just my usual luck going down again soon   Oladia: ahh ok how much water waterfall water or a bucket   Dungeon Master (GM): The rushing, roaring water, fills the whole passage! Arnie and wuth can make dexterity saves to dive into the passage to the west of them everyone else gets swept away   Myriandor: 11     20 DEXTERITY SAVE  (4) Arnie 12 DEXTERITY SAVE  (4)   Dramin Stillfest: 21 DEXTERITY SAVE  (4)   Dungeon Master (GM): arnie dives into the opening   Myriandor: And the rest?   Dungeon Master (GM): wuth is swept away!   Oladia: can wuth leap and grab arnies hand as they are close  
Dungeon Master (GM): everyone will take 1d6 of damage from being swept away so Paco:  5  Bludgeoning Myriandor:  4 Wuth:  6   Oladia: oofff   Dungeon Master (GM): Gerjio:  3   Myriandor: Myri is down again :(   Oladia: has the water cleared out or is it constant flow   Dungeon Master (GM): The water gradually settles back to were it original was. Paco is at 1 hp, Myri and Wuth at 0 hp and Gerjio at 8 hp arnie is ok where she is   Oladia: so we are left with 3npcs haah   Dungeon Master (GM): what will the reminder do???   Myriandor: Best is to rest and when able heal the others   Paco the Elf Ranger Stumbling over to a pile of my downed party members I rush to Myri and use heal   Dungeon Master (GM): there is the cart on the path tied to a tree that you guys left behind   13     6 MEDICINE  (-1) Myriandor   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   Oladia: how long is Vin out for?   Dungeon Master (GM): 50 minutes. Ok you bandage her up she's just banged up from the rush of water ok after a while the water level normalized   Myriandor: Looking like we need to rest and heal   Dungeon Master (GM): Arnie can get back out now   Paco the Elf Ranger Says: "I will go check the cart out have a moment to get yourself together and tend to the others"   Dungeon Master (GM): you can go back to the cart if you want....it's a 5 mile jaunt   Arnie the Halfling Fighter Dragges both our fallen members out of the stream and on to the grass   Dungeon Master (GM): ok so ok with everyone that you go back to the cart???   Oladia: yes   Dramin Stillfest: yes   Myriandor: Sure   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   Oladia: we should carry our team to the cart   Dungeon Master (GM): back to the triboar trail map ok you get down there without incident   Oladia: so how much time passed whilst we were travelling there   Dungeon Master (GM): ok roughly 2.5 hours at least since starting at the cave mouth   Oladia: IS there two ne ppl at the cart looting it on the road   Myriandor: So everyone is alive just need to rest   Dungeon Master (GM): ok so the ones at 0 hp are plopped into the wagon no those were party members will you stay here or continue on to Phandalin from here?   Oladia: we should return to town   Dramin Stillfest: yes   Oladia: haul ass with these bulls   Dungeon Master (GM): ok you head to your destination then which is Phandalin   Myriandor: Yeah We can come back this way later   Dungeon Master (GM): ok i need to copy paste the cart and tokens here   Dungeon Master (GM): each square on this map is 5 feet   Oladia: ok, to the tavern to rest?   Myriandor: Sounds good   Dungeon Master (GM): ok as you travel down the road you do see a sign on a building that says Barthen's provisions which is your destination for the wagon. Ok   Oladia: so is there only meant to be a certain amount u can move per turn?   Dungeon Master (GM): 30 ft is the average unless someone is wearing armor that is slower thus you likely keep up with the slower one unless someone is scouting ahead do you want to go to Barthen's first ?   Oladia: yes   The Party arrives in Phadalin with Gundren’s wagon they are to deliver to Barthen’s Provisions Shop.  
Area Description: The rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins—crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars—surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town. As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   Elmar Barthen Says: "Greetings Folks, I am Elmar Barthen, how my we help you today?"   Arnie the Halfling Fighter Says: "Greetings we have been injured and are looking to have our members rested up and cared to is this something you can offer us"   Elmar Barthen Says: "there is the stonehill travern and there are likely folks there now, there is also the sleeping giant where the redbrands like to hang, if you are an associate of them."   Gerjio the Tortle Ranger Says: "We are also looking to hire some new mercanaries if you have heard about anyone in the area looking for work"   Elmar Barthen Says: "Oh for the injured you may want to see Sister Garaele"   Elmar Barthen Says: "New Mercenaries? well, you could try the stonehill or the sleeping giant"   Elmar Barthen Says: "Do you folks know the Redbrands?"   Arnie the Halfling Fighter Says: "This is the first time I am hearing of the redbrands care to inform me Elma"   Elmar Barthen Says: "The Stonehill has rooms"   Gerjio the Tortle Ranger Says: "Where is stone hill from here"   Elmar Barthen Says: "Let's just say the Redbrands are the town ruffians" , "They are troublemakers".   Paco the Elf Ranger Says: "Are they here right now?"   Elmar Barthen Says: "Yes they are always here, they live here."   Arnie the Halfling Fighter Says: "So these ruffians what sort of ppl are they poor rich?"   Arnie the Halfling Fighter Lowers my voice and takes a glace around the provisions shop, looking out as we speak on these topics   Elmar Barthen Says: "well, they are not the wealthy type for sure"   Gerjio the Tortle Ranger Says: "And how would one identify these people also how many of them are here"   Dungeon Master (GM): Just to remind you, that you have not told Barthen why you are here!   Elmar Barthen: Elmar Barthen Says: "Easily identifiable they are. They all wear red hooded cloaks"   Oladia: Arnie the Halfling Fighter Says: "Thank you for your information Elmar Could you kindly point us in the direction of the tavern"   Elmar Barthen Says: "The Stonehill is just 3 buildings down from me"   Oladia: we will be leaving now for the tavern   Dungeon Master (GM): you leave without telling Barthen why you stopped in?   Oladia: yes   Dramin Stillfest: lol   Oladia: lets continue to the tavern, is there anyone roaming around the town?   Dungeon Master (GM): that's the building (being Pinged) well you do see children out playing   Oladia: lets enter the tavern   Dungeon Master (GM): ok we could actually introduce the new characters here, in the tavern of course!   Oladia: intoduce us and lets kill the reds   Oladia: without the others the manor is abandond right? lets leave the party hidden away there to rest with arnie defending the Stonehill tavern door   Dungeon Master (GM): you asking someone in the tavern that?   Oladia: DM   Dungeon Master (GM): i need to fog out the map and stuff i'll do that next session   Oladia: ok   Dungeon Master (GM): we can do all the tavern intermingling next week as we pick up another new player. there were a couple more wanting in before the game   Dramin Stillfest: cool   Oladia: okay that sounds good can we have a separate party right now me and Darmin leaving the tavern in search for work or do we need to join the party   Dungeon Master (GM): you could but will you deliver the wagon to Barthen like you are supposed to do?!   Oladia: no im gonna steal it for my self with darmin and leave   Dramin Stillfest: yup   Dungeon Master (GM): heh, but see the other party members might protest that! so we should just pick up on that next week!  
Oladia the Elf Ranger I notice a cart outside and begin to check its contents   Dungeon Master (GM): so you can interact that all out   Oladia: okay   Dungeon Master (GM): heh ok   Oladia: whats in the cart tho   Oladia: also one other thing i wanna examin the stature statue   Dungeon Master (GM): The wagon is packed full of an assortment of mining supplies and food. This includes a dozen sacks of flour, several casks of salted pork, two kegs of strong ale, shovels, picks, and crowbars (about a dozen each), and five lanterns with a small barrel of oil (about fifty flasks in volume).   Oladia: can the party long rest in the tavern before next session as well?   Dungeon Master (GM): yes you can do that but like i said let's wait till next session before this all takes place as it appears you two are the only ones still here right now!   Oladia: okay   Dungeon Master (GM): and i need the others here!   Dramin Stillfest: alright   Oladia: well at least i saved their characters haha   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, then we stop here and continue next week!
