Ch. 10: Dealing with the Tasloi Guards at the Main Gate and Encountering Bullywugs for the First Time!

Dungeon Master (GM): we left off here at the main gate inside the cavern which should lead you into the Forbidden City itself.   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Ohh.. hey now we know where it goes Did we bash in this door yet?   Maevis Silverleaf: No I tried giving it a kick rolled high need a 4 or less   Balen: Three unconscious "baddies"; The other five Charmed by Maevis, right? And (as far as we know) one in the gate tower that was throwing javelins (but may be out of ammo at this time?)   Dungeon Master (GM): You had to deal with the tasloi guarding the gate and had charmed a bunch of them while knocking unconscious the few that were not charmed. Meanwhile there appear to be a few up in the gates' blockhouses ready to throw javelins down on the party. You have ~40 minutes and likely less for the Yuan-Ti and additional tasloi break through the webbing 600 ft to the north.   GreyWolfVT (Grax): sounds accurate to me Balen   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Sheila can give it a shot to break in the guardhouse door   OPEN A NORMAL DOOR For Sheila the Human Cleric Rolls:  12  Needs ≤  10   the times you want low and cant get it   Dungeon Master (GM): you of course do not know how many if any at all in the blockhouses were charmed by the bard   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Can we combine forces to break it down?   Dungeon Master (GM): Yes you could do that. Ok so we start with Sheila running up to the door to try and bash it in but first a javelin comes flying out at her.   Tasloi #11 -C3a, Attacks with the JAVELIN at Sheila enemy! Javelin Strike Hits an AC of  0  For  2  S/M/L Damage!   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i think we already tried more than one of us   Dungeon Master (GM): A miss for the tasloi! Sheila slams into the door to no effect!   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Anyone have an open door spell?   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i think they have it barred on the other side   Dungeon Master (GM): the 3 by the blockhouse all tried the door so far   GreyWolfVT (Grax): is that another door over by the 5 charmed tasloi?   Dungeon Master (GM): yea as it is the other blockhouse with the formerly shuttered windows   GreyWolfVT (Grax): and we haven't tried that one that i can recall   Dungeon Master (GM): no one one has gone over to that side yet   Maevis Silverleaf: Not yet just this one   OPEN A NORMAL DOOR For Grax Ironcloak the Shield Dwarf Fighter / Thief Rolls:  5  Needs ≤  9   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Coal is going to shoot an arrow at anyone popping up to throw a javelin   Dungeon Master (GM): you had already tried it Grax   [Note: an Opps here, somehow I was not reading it as Grax going over to the other door on the west blockhouse, I would have had a tasloi throw a javelin at him and he would have opened it.]   lookus b.: if they are charmed, maybe the bard could ask them for the key?   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: the other door?   GreyWolfVT (Grax): no not this door i hadn't you do see i am on the left door right?   Dungeon Master (GM): ok noted so that next time one throws one you can roll to fire the arrow Coal there are 2 windows facing north on the east side block house but only 1 on the west side.   GreyWolfVT (Grax): ....   Maevis Silverleaf: They dont understand us just charmed by the music tried talking to them last week   Dungeon Master (GM): there are more windows visible between the gates, at least two on each side i believe and likely more on the opposite south side.   Balen The Human Bard Gently and quietly tip-toes between the unconscious tasloi, grins and shrugs his shoulders at his party members, then kicks at the door they have been unable to open   OPEN A NORMAL DOOR For Balen the Human Bard   Rolls:  7  Needs ≤  10   Dungeon Master (GM): oh ok you went to the left door what route did you take to move over to that side same for sheila   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Straight across   Dungeon Master (GM): Balen smashed the door in when he saw it break open and something on the other side crash to the ground! but i better throw a javelin at you   Tasloi #11 -C3a, Attacks with the JAVELIN at Balen enemy! Javelin Strike Hits an AC of  5  For  5  S/M/L Damage!   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: fire arrow   Dungeon Master (GM): ok and ok   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: I have no target   Dungeon Master (GM): that hit him as he plunged into the door for 5 damage   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: I can use one of the other tasloi   Dungeon Master (GM): fire your arrow coal   Coal the Ranger, Fires a FLIGHT ARROW (18") with the FOESEEKER LONG BOW +1 (6ft) at Tasloi #17 -C3a enemy! Point Blank Range 6 to 30 ft +2 'To Hit' and Damage Flight Arrow Strike Hits: AC  -8  For  9  S/M/L HP Damage! 3 arrow attacks / round Make sure to note # of arrows fired in round!
Balen The Human Bard Says, "Jester's luck, I guess - both good and bad - OUCH!"   Dungeon Master (GM): you see it score a solid hit right in between the eyes!   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: WooHoo   Dungeon Master (GM): ok is sheila actually over by the other door!   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: She was going that way when balen smashed the door in   Balen The Human Bard Waves at Grax and with a bow and a flourish, points to the now open door offering him first entrance!   Dungeon Master (GM): ok so she had a javelin come at her when she went that way so let's see   Tasloi #04 -C3a, Attacks with the JAVELIN at Sheila enemy! Javelin Strike Hits an AC of  -1  For  3  S/M/L Damage!   it just missed her! ok she is by that door now   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: She will go back, and coal will cover the window the javelin came from with a readied arrow   Dungeon Master (GM): what route does she take to go back?   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: straight back   Dungeon Master (GM): oh ok so of course another one comes flying out and coal can fire at that one   Tasloi #04 -C3a, Attacks with the JAVELIN at Sheila enemy! Javelin Strike Hits an AC of  3  For  6  S/M/L Damage!   Coal the Ranger, Fires a FLIGHT ARROW (18") with the FOESEEKER LONG BOW +1 (6ft) at Tasloi #20 -C3a enemy! Point Blank Range 6 to 30 ft +2 'To Hit' and Damage   Flight Arrow Strike Hits: AC  0  For  5  S/M/L HP Damage! 3 arrow attacks / round Make sure to note # of arrows fired in round!   Dungeon Master (GM): missed her and Coal hits another one, though the shot didn't look like it was a kill. What's next here?   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Charge!!!   Maevis Silverleaf: Go inside the now open door   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Coal will continue to cover the upper windows   Dungeon Master (GM): ok look like grax moves inside, you see an empty ground floor here with only barrels of javelins around.and a flight of stairs going up Hi Devin   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Sheila will follow grax   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i actually can only see a large black space   Dungeon Master (GM): if you do see tasloi they are not there on the ground floor but upstairs   GreyWolfVT (Grax): ok   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Grax lets move up ther stairs, I will follow or lead either way   Maevis Silverleaf: Maevis will stay by the door playing keeping the five busy   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i don't actually see any stairs but that was my intention   Balen The Human Bard Once those in a hurry have entered the guardhouse, he looks for what he saw fall when he kicked open the door, thinking it may have been more than a locking bar, etc.   Phicenta Thragiella De Thrul: can i do something to help? or just watch?   Dungeon Master (GM): ok as he moves up stairs he sees one near the stairs waiting for someone to come up so he tossed a javelin at grax   Tasloi #12 -C3a, Attacks with the JAVELIN at Grax enemy! Javelin Strike Hits an AC of  2  For  3  S/M/L Damage!   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i catch it and throw it back   Dungeon Master (GM): it hits him for 2 damage   Grax the Fighter / Thief, using his magical GAUNTLETS of FENCING, attacks with the BROAD SWORD (3.5ft) at Tasloi #12 -C3a enemy! Strike Hits an AC of  -3  For  9  S/M or  7  L HP Damage! *Specialized Weapon: 2/1 attacks/round i stab at thee!   Dungeon Master (GM): as Grax gets to the top he sees two more tasloi that are just standing there and one with an arrow between the eyes and his new opponent.   It seems that Tasloi #12 -C3a is defeated!   Dungeon Master (GM): Grax nails that one!   Devin M.: I'm here!   Dungeon Master (GM): Grax, the other two look charmed   Dungeon Master (GM): ok devin!   Dungeon Master (GM): what's next?   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Look for a lever or something to open the next gate   GreyWolfVT (Grax): or is there some special bonus for charmed?   Dungeon Master (GM): ok you see no levers here   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i mean that would be like stabbing a practice dummy
Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: If he is defenseless it should almost be automatic hit other than a fumble   Dungeon Master (GM): yea, but it's like he sees the attack coming (unless backstabbing) so not automatic. So +4 to hit since he's just standing there, just snapping out of the Charm to defend himself. If he were prone or unable to dodge or incapacitated, then i'd say it's automatic.   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Any windows that we can see down the passage from beyond the gate?   Balen: Anything special found when looking for "smashed the door in when he saw it break open and something on the other side crash to the ground!"   GreyWolfVT (Grax): Nothing more is to be seen other than the wooden bar on the floor that was blocking the door. Alright i guess i just try one of the levers to see if it opens anything   Dungeon Master (GM): there are not any visible ones here!   GreyWolfVT (Grax): FINE!   GreyWolfVT (Grax): there i left that room then   Dungeon Master (GM): remember you did need to pull open the first gate ok   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: So now we need to either clear the other tower or just go to the gate and try to open it. Coal will cover the windows   Dungeon Master (GM): remember the map as made does not show the north gate but it's there according to the module itself   Balen: Is that a window to the south? Can we see "inside" the gate?   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: right, but it is already opened   Dungeon Master (GM): well balen can see the area between the two gates from one of two windows and to the north from two windows, and there are 2 windows on the south wall as well. ok if sheila did indeed move to the south gate she gets two javelins thrown at her from the west blockhouse   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: ok, yes she does and coal will return fire   Tasloi #04 -C3a, Attacks with the JAVELIN at Sheila enemy! Point Blank Range 6 to 30 ft +2 'To Hit' and Damage   Flight Arrow Strike Hits: AC  4  For  5  S/M/L HP Damage! 3 arrow attacks / round Make sure to note # of arrows fired in round!   Dungeon Master (GM): A Critical hit for double damage of 6 on Sheila and Coal hits one!   Tasloi #02 -C3a, Attacks with the JAVELIN at Sheila enemy! Javelin Strike Hits an AC of  8  For  4  S/M/L Damage!   Dungeon Master (GM): A Critical hit for double damage of 6 on Sheila then a miss, ok what is next?   Dungeon Master (GM): ok is sheila attempting to open the gate some more, it is actually a bit ajar i believe so let me check on that   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Coal will move down and continue to cover sheila as she tries to see how to open the gate   Balen The Human Bard Takes a javelin from one of the barrels in the blockhouse, hefts it and smiles. "This could be worth getting good at" he thinks to himself as he walks out the door with it.   GreyWolfVT (Grax): Grax will do the same   Dungeon Master (GM): ok it's not ajar but has a lock on it that is visibly unlocked at the moment   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: I remove the lock or is it like a door lock in the gate?   Dungeon Master (GM): It’s a padlock and chain I guess as the module does not say. Ok so 1 javelin comes out the window at either Grax or coal:  5 Coal   Tasloi #02 -C3a, Attacks with the JAVELIN at Coal enemy! Javelin Strike Hits an AC of  13  For  3  S/M/L Damage! it flies wide of him   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: I will loose my arrow and with the free hand and gloves of missile snaring attempt to catch the javelin   Dungeon Master (GM): ha! you can do that   Coal the Ranger, Fires a FLIGHT ARROW (18") with the FOESEEKER LONG BOW +1 (6ft) at Tasloi #10 -C3a enemy! Point Blank Range 6 to 30 ft +2 'To Hit' and Damage Flight Arrow Strike Hits: AC  4  For  7  S/M/L HP Damage! 3 arrow attacks / round Make sure to note # of arrows fired in round! not sure how to roll to catch the javelin   Dungeon Master (GM): roll vs petrification to see if you snatched the javelin   SAVE VS. PETRIFICATION For Coal Blackstone the Human Ranger Rolls:  3  Needs ≥  11   Dungeon Master (GM): you hit the tasloi but did not snag the javelin!  
Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: dang.. lol Coal continues to cover the windows, Sheila attempts to push or pull the gate open   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, she moves the opened lock aside and attempts to pull it but it does not budge for her   Balen The Human Bard Laughs and cavorts over to Coal and offers the javelin he had taken from the blockhouse - trying to place it in the hand that missed the flying one.   Sheila The Human Cleric Says, "Grax!! Come help me get this gate open!" Ha..   GreyWolfVT (Grax): sure what the heck do you want me to do? you already got the lock open   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: We ned to pull the gate open Its really heavy for a girl   GreyWolfVT (Grax): ok   Dungeon Master (GM): ok your combined strength was enough to budge open the gate and send a large net down upon both of you, balen and coal! ok to your astonishment the netting also has spikes in it which means you all take damage!   GreyWolfVT (Grax): good ...   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Ouch   Dungeon Master (GM): Coal:  7  minus -1 for every AC below 10 you are Balen:  6 Grax:  14 Sheila:  13   Balen: The "minus" for under AC 10 applies to all, or just Coal?   Dungeon Master (GM): for all   Xilicien: minus -1 would be plus one, though...   Dungeon Master (GM): so Coal took no damage   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Sheila takes 1   Balen: For Balen (AC 8) would be -2.   Dungeon Master (GM): balen take 4   GreyWolfVT (Grax): yeah and i have ac 3 so i take 7   Dungeon Master (GM): ok yes   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: sounds right   Dungeon Master (GM): after you get the spikey netting off you and see the ceiling you note there was a wooden framework hidden to look like the cave wall above you holding the netting, until the south gate was opened   Balen The Human Bard Carefully extricates himself from the spiked net - being carefull not to poke himself or others with any spikes   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: No javelins while we extracate outselves? And we have this kewl net now.. will it fit in my backpack?   Dungeon Master (GM): nope no more javelins come flying   Maevis Silverleaf: Maybe in a bag of Holding   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Not with spikes   Dungeon Master (GM): the netting is big, it’s 20 ft x 20 ft   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Who has that portable hole? OK so we push aside the netting, and continue to open the gate   Maevis Silverleaf: Can we go out the gate now?   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i hope so   Dungeon Master (GM): yes you could go south if you wish or back north to confront the yuan-ti and his tasloi   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Once we all get through the gate we can pull it closed behind us. and put this lock on it   GreyWolfVT (Grax): put the lock on up higher so they can't reach it easily   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Then maevis can quit playing "Its the end of the world as we know it"!!   Balen The Human Bard Says, "Do we really want to lock ourselves out of what is currently our only way back out of this place?"   GreyWolfVT (Grax): that would be Balen wouldn't it? playing music he is a bard after all   Dungeon Master (GM): well you do have a key that opened the first lock   Maevis Silverleaf: and I feel fine   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: I will try the key in the second lock   Balen: Ok, I missed having the key   GreyWolfVT (Grax): oh yeah nvm they both are bards   Dungeon Master (GM): (To GM)rolling  4 = 4   Dungeon Master (GM): it does not work in the lock   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: So we can use the chain from the first gate and chain the gate closed with the lock I have the key for   GreyWolfVT (Grax): there you go   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   GreyWolfVT (Grax): a plan   Grax Ironcloak The Shield Dwarf Fighter / Thief Says, "I love it when a plan comes together"
Dungeon Master (GM): ok you can move the tokens south then   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: So once everyone is this side of the gate, we pull it closed enough to chain and lock it behind us   Maevis Silverleaf: Maevis keeps playing until the gate is locked   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   GreyWolfVT (Grax): yeah and i take it we don't have a cleric or healing potions either?   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Any windows in the guard houses on this side of the gate? I am a cleric but out of healing until we rest   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i checked my sheet i don't have any potions   Dungeon Master (GM): yes 2 on each side   GreyWolfVT (Grax): I can't be the front guy at half my HP   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: So I will cover the windows on the east tower   Dungeon Master (GM): hmm, i thought there was a picture showing it but i guess not, just of the tasloi   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Sheila can take the lead   GreyWolfVT (Grax): ok   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Rowan can always take the lead to. he has hirelings   Dungeon Master (GM): ok as you reach there holdup! you spot several humanoid looking frogs up ahead but they also see you coming down, you also see two big boats up ahead. "   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Do these appear as if they are a type of lizard man, or troglodyte?   Maevis Silverleaf The Half Elf Bard Says, "Quietly "This is our chance to get closer tell them that we have papers to show them"   GreyWolfVT (Grax): nah he was using that ability on me   Bullywug #08 -C2: ha ha   Xilicien: Frogman, not lizardman.   Sheila The Human Cleric Says, "OK I have my papers!. Come here"   GreyWolfVT (Grax): Grax is holding back from trying to backstab the jester   (From Balen):  No, not yet. Letting the "party of whisperers" decide   (To Balen):  oh ok   Sheila The Human Cleric Says, "And lower those damn weapons."   BARD CHARM Maevis Silverleaf the Half Elf Bard, starts playing his/her PanPipes and attempts to Charm, with his/her Singing & Playing!   If the Charming is a success: Bard’s Singing & Playing can charm Creatures within  40 ft. Creatures must Save Versus Petrification ( -1  on saving throw for every  3  levels of the bard) or be Charmed & sit entranced while the bard sings. Those not Charmed will listen to the bard for 1 full round. Charmed Creatures are subject to ‘Suggestion’, if the bard utilizes it, the charmed creatures must save vs petrification at -2 on their die rolls or be subject to the suggestion. Loud noise or physical attack will negate charm but not suggestion. This will last for 1 Turn (10 rounds) or 1 round per level of the Bard, which ever is better. (From Maevis Silverleaf):  Chance to Charm is 34%: Rolling  68 %   Grax Ironcloak The Shield Dwarf Fighter / Thief Says, "What weapons I aint got none raised."   Bullywug #08 -C2: hmm the charm does not work!   GreyWolfVT (Grax): ...yet lol got more than one that can try to charm them   Dungeon Master (GM): will balen try to?  
Bullywug #08 -C2 The Bullywug Says, "Well, let's see your papers."   BARD CHARM Balen the Human Bard , starts playing his/her Pan Pipes and attempts to Charm, with his/her Singing & Playing!   If the Charming is a success: Bard’s Singing & Playing can charm Creatures within  40 ft.
