Ch. 11: The Party Tries to Enter the Forbidden City

Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: holow   Dungeon Master (GM): Hello Folks!   Dungeon Master (GM): with 5 of you here, looks like we can get underway   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: So did we already search the Yuan-ti? I dont remember? looking for anything that will get us past any more guards if possible   Dungeon Master (GM): yes the snake fellow had a pouch with 2 gems worth 1,000 each and a vial.   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: that's right.. So party consensus.. do we find somewhere to rest, or march on?   Maevis Silverleaf: Rest and heal if needed   Dungeon Master (GM): you are at a point in the passage now where you can see the opening into daylight right up ahead of you.   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: The Yuan-ti also had a long bow, scimitar and quiver of 20 arrows.   Dungeon Master (GM): right and two of you took most of the arrows   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: yes, Shiela put the rest in her haversack withthe quiver   Dungeon Master (GM): alright   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: ok. so lets march on to the opening   Dungeon Master (GM): to the opening we go folks?   Maevis Silverleaf: Ye Forward into the opening   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: cautiously   Dungeon Master (GM): ok as you approach the opening you see a strip of land and then some docks with several boats of various sizes, some for just passengers, others for cargo. These docks are manned by mongrelmen.   Maevis Silverleaf: If there was a bridge across a great lake I could drive there faster need to go around it   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: talk to the mongrelmen, and as how much for a ride to the city? Also ask if they have seen Quintolos and describe what he used to look like before he was "changed"   Devin M.: I am loaded.   Maevis Silverleaf: Mongrelmen? Back at the start of this mess   Dungeon Master (GM): ok as you exit the cave to go talk to the mogrelmen you see a city on an island on a lake as well. You are then told to stop as two Yuan-ti, one with snakes for arms approach from either side of the cave mouth. One of the ask you in common, "Do You have your permissions to enter the city?"   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "My permissions are my own doing.. Those damn troglodites back there took our papers"   Maevis Silverleaf: (Looks like a fight coming so who wants to start it?)   Dungeon Master (GM): ha ha ha! Yuan-Ti Halfblood says, so you claim the trogs took them, hmm. What are your names? Then we will see if the master will let you in."   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "I am Rollo.. we have been building a road to the city through the swamps"   Xilicien The Elven Magic-User Says, "I'm Calvin."   Dungeon Master (GM): off to the right side along the cliff wall you noticed several frogmen, that actually look more primitive than the ones at the waterfall entrance. There are cave openings nearby and some of them are watching the exchange between you and the yuan-ti   Freeman3294: My internet is buggin out sorry guys   Dungeon Master (GM): Yuan-Ti says, "You are Rollo? hmm, I know a Rollo and you do not look anything like him." Yuan-ti says, "Does Calvin have a last name? Also what is your business with the city?"   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "I said I was with Rollo. Clearing a path through the swamps. We we attacked by your frogmen and have come for payment for the dead"   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "Ah, Which Frogmen, do you speak of?""   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Those damned Grippli Frogmen   Dungeon Master (GM): [you know of two species of frogmen and now perhaps 3]   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "Ah, yes, the grippli can be troublesome. What proof of this grippli attack do you have to present to the master?""   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Not sure what you are looking for other than the blood off our weapons   Xilicien The Elven Magic-User Says, "Yes, my last name is smith, Rollo hired me to repair some of his roadworking trinkets, if necessary."   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: We didnt bring heads if that's what you want   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "present one of these blood stained weapons and let me inspect it."   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Sheila will present her blood stained mace.   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "Hand me the mace please woman."   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: You can inspect the end I will keep the handle, thank you very much business end   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood studies over the mace then licks an area of blood upon it.   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "Hmmm, does not seem like Grippli to me." (From Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila):  Sheila never hit the Yuan-Ti   (From Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila):  She did hit one of the frogmen in the caves there though   (To Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila):  ok
Balen The Human Bard Says, "Maybe they were Southern Grippli? A bit spicier?"   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Well It's not the only thing that has met its end..   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "I see you have a comedian in your group."   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "So again please present your name and order of business, then you must wait here until the Master gives us his word one way or the other."   Balen The Human Bard Says, "I see you appreciate fine humor. Much better than some here (glancing at Grax)"   Maevis Silverleaf The Half Elf Bard Says, "We have also fought snakes, spiders crocodiles, lots of beasts in the jungle"   (From Balen):  Will attempt to use "joking" to improve reactions. I know it can take 1-10 rounds to achieve.   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Tell the master that Rollo's crew has arrived. He will let us in.   (From Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila):  looking around, do I see any other guards, or creatures that would prevent us from entering?   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "Says, if this is for a little R&R you would still need your permissions, but we will inform the master. It is up to him if you will be let in to enjoy the cities comforts."   Balen The Human Bard Says, "You know how it is - "It's a jungle out there"."   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: If he lets us in, you can give us permissions   (To Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila):  you do note a group of about 5 primitive looking bullywugs off to the right of the cave mouth, just a few short hops away, watching all of you.   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "A jungle indeed."   the snake armed one waves over to one of the primitive looking bullywugs to come over 3 hops over he comes up to him and there is an exchange.   Maevis Silverleaf: (IN Slitherin?)   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "The frogman will deliver the message that you are here and wish to enter the city. Again you must wait until his return with the answer."   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "No Problem.. We seem to be used to waiting on things around here"   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11: [it was not in common or yuan-ti so likely one the bullywug understood]   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "And Rollo isnt really happy about the attacks on his work that you promised to protect him from. "   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11: the snake-armed one motions for the frogman to go to the docks, of which he hops away towards and talks to a mogrelman to use a boat over, then goes over.   Balen The Human Bard Says, "Yep, "hurry up and wait" - but I suspect a military type like you is used to that too!"   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "Rollo should have plenty of hired help, watching over things."   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "I deal with folks like you daily, but you would be the first actual clown i've met."   Balen The Human Bard Says, "Jester. Clowns have to be in a union and pay dues. It's enough to make you laugh."   (From Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila):  do I see the rope bridge that goes over to the city?   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11: ok, let's say it's about an hour later when the frogman returns ok, no you see no rope bridge   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: During that time I mingle through the group and whisper to each to be battle ready when the frogman returns if he says we cant enter.   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11: The bullywug talks to the guards briefly then hops part of the way towards the cave entrances in the cliffs looking like he's saying something to his gang as well.   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "So where are my permissions Yuan?"   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11: The yaun-ti approaches the party to give them the news [dm will roll on this] 1-3 you may enter: rolling 1d6( 6 ) = 6   Maevis Silverleaf: Roll Init then   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "I am sorry to inform you all but you may not enter the city."   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "You refuse entry of Rollos crew to a safe place fro rest!!!!"   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "It is not I, but the Master's wishes."
Xilicien The Elven Magic-User Says, "Is there anything we can do to gain entry, a favor perhaps?"   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "We will enter the city.. You can not keep me out!" and I take a few steps towards the boats   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood draws his scimitar from it's scabbard, waving it at Coal   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "Do not approach any closer or you will be dealt with!"   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "What? you goign to attack rollos troops.. who is helping the city building the roads"   Xilicien The Elven Magic-User Says, "I'm sorry about my employer, he can be... temperamental, now about my question?"   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "If you leave me no choice, yes you all will be dealt with."   the snake armed one is seen to shout something in the same tongue he used with the bullywug messenger. you then see a group of about 5 of them come hopping over to the entrance.   Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "Fine we will go back and inform rollo that we were denied our due rest. "   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "Yes, you do that and remind Rollo, that even his employees need the permissions to enter the city."   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: OOC, what do you all want to do? fight or retreat back into the cave to regroup   Xilicien: I do not wish to fight.   Balen The Human Bard Says, "So there's no inn or tavern on the outskirts of the town proper where we could rest and get a decent drink if we can't get IN the city??"   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Coal turns toward the group and looks for a sign of what the party wishes to do?   Balen The Human Bard Says, "Maybe even some place where a jester could perform and perhaps get folks to relax and laugh a bit?"   Maevis Silverleaf: (Back away regroup)   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: sounds like a plan Coal Blackstone The Human Ranger Says, "Yes.. Permissions.. "   Coal will go back with the group and back into the caverns.   GreyWolfVT (Grax): well there done shoveling .... until tomorrow morning....   Dungeon Master (GM): [you see that the rim of the crater has a swampy beach all around it. You also note that the city is surrounded by a swampy beach. There does appear to be a small village on the western rim from here.   GreyWolfVT (Grax): hmm maybe we check the village out?   Yuan-Ti Half-Blood #01 -C11 The Yuan-Ti Half-Blood Says, "to Balen: you still need the permissions to get any farther. Regardless."   Maevis Silverleaf: (Go check the village)   Balen The Human Bard Says, "Oh, well. Their loss. Seems like folks around here could use a good laugh and loosening up"   Dungeon Master (GM): [do you try to head for the village?]   Balen: OOC - can we see any other "cave entrances" near the western village? (I.e., can we come out at a different place close to the village?)   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Not if it is outside of the caves and they say we can not go there.   Dungeon Master (GM): it is Outside, it's on a beach the encircles the enter rim of the crater lake. The city isle itself is also surrounded with swampy beaches that encircles the entire rim that is   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: after we retreat into the cave, I will also note to the party that there is supposed to be a rope bridge into the city from the top, but I didnt see one going over to the city There is a few dead ends in the caves that end with rubble. We may be able to clearit and see where it leads, or we can go see where the ant passage leads?   Dungeon Master (GM): [I should clarify that the rope bridge, of which you did see prior to entering the caves, does go over to the top of the plateau but likely not down into the city]   GreyWolfVT (Grax): well there were some boats by the frogmen we killed we could take and use those to see if we can get anywhere back where the water is.   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: currently there is no other entrance out of the caves on this side of the volcano GreyWolfVT (Grax): because we didn't see where it leads west of the dead creature in the water where it says "river"   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: So I believe that comes out where we initially came in, where we took the boats from the mainland to the volcano rim.   Dungeon Master (GM): [to be clear about the waterfall entrance: the cavern areas where the river flows though (near the walls), is not high enough for a boat to go through, so it may simply continue underground before connecting to the one of the rivers south of the plateau   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i mean there sure is a lot of black space on this huge map for this to be the only way in   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: so back by the gate, there was what looked like a hole in the wall. maybe ther eis a passage there
GreyWolfVT (Grax): right   Maevis Silverleaf: I agree there has to be another way in I think we may still find a safer Secret entrance   GreyWolfVT (Grax): plus as you mentioned the rubble filled side passages could lead somewhere   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: if we go back to the gate we will ahve the bullywugs that we didnt kill there and perhaps reinforcements to go through. although I did lock them in, so they couldnt get out   GreyWolfVT (Grax): right but we know the way out of here through the tunnels without going through the gate   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: ed, scroll straight dwn until you can see the gates   Dungeon Master (GM): [so yes trying to dig out the one passage or exploring the possible ant nest are options the party has, but i will say the rubble looks like it would take a very very long time to clear out!]   GreyWolfVT (Grax): yes but i am saying we can get around that   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: there is a side passage there we did not look at   GreyWolfVT (Grax): yes i see it we can take the long way around to get there without dealing with the group there by the gates   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: right, and avoid the bullywugs   GreyWolfVT (Grax): yes   Balen: Just checking - but no one has any magical capability to speed up clearing rubble?   Dungeon Master (GM): you are on the side of the gate now where it would be easy to deal with the remainder of the tasloi guards there   GreyWolfVT (Grax): sure if we want a long drawn out battle   Balen: And the Xorn - he just "passes through" the rock, he doesn't leave a "path" we could follow if we could entice him to help us?   GreyWolfVT (Grax): i forgot about the Xorn   Dungeon Master (GM): Altomi the bard had a lyre of building but the current party does not have anything i do not think   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: I say we check out the side passage by the gate first kill the tasloi or go around, doesn’t matter to me.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok party vote on that, head straight for the tasloi or go around, either way you'll have to deal with thrown javelins at the least.   Xilicien: Go around for me.   GreyWolfVT (Grax): same for me Maevis Silverleaf: go around   GreyWolfVT (Grax): we can always use the cube to prevent getting hit with javelins once we get nearer to the gate   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, let me move the tokens to the other side of the gate   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: I would vote to fight, but if we go around, we should stop in one of the side passages, or find a place outside of thecaves where the mongrelmen are at for a rest to regain spells.   Maevis Silverleaf: Yes we need to rest sometime before the next fight Balen: Resting before another battle is reasonable. Resting in the caves might be a long shot, though.   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: well we would have to go out of the cave, down by the river where the mongrel men are taking people across the river, and then back into the larger cave entrance. there should be somehwere safe to rest at least outside the caves where the mongrel men are at, no?   Maevis Silverleaf: Lets check out the area   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Ricky?   Dungeon Master (GM): yes?   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: when we exit the cave, where the mongrel men are at, is there anywhere to rest there?   Dungeon Master (GM): it's just docks on either side of the river with passenger boats and cargo boats, a few huts here and there for the workers to rest and eat in.   Maevis Silverleaf: So guess we rest in the caves   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: So we set up a small encampment off to the side of where the mongrel men tents are set up and rest, with watches. agreed? The mongrel men are not our enemies. they are just workers   GreyWolfVT (Grax): agreed   Maevis Silverleaf: Sure just know that w cant rely on the mongrelmen for anything   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: that's why we keep watches   Maevis Silverleaf: not enemies but not friends either   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: If they wanted to try anything they could have sunk us in the river   Maevis Silverleaf: Sure its the most safe area we have   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: I just think its better than inside the caves, where ALL of the traffic in or out will be enemies 90% of the time   Maevis Silverleaf: True   Dungeon Master (GM): alright, so then looks like i will move you to a jungle map and do some rolls for encounters as you camp out and rest, since this is basically a whole new group of adventurers the yuan-ti do not have any reason to deal with you all, really.   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: DM, prior to resting I will cast detect magic on the few items we have picked up..   Dungeon Master (GM): alright   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: the yuan-ti bow and arrows, scimitar, vial, gems any spears shields or armor anyone kept. I dont have that in my log   Dungeon Master (GM): ok does the watch order look ok?   GreyWolfVT (Grax): I added Rowan to the watch with Grax   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Sheila needs to pray for spells, does she need to be removed from the watch? how do you run that?   GreyWolfVT (Grax): might need to take Quintolos off there   Dungeon Master (GM): quintolos needs changed out as well ok, i will do some rolls now   (To GM):   2   1   3   5   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: Camlin can be added to the watch list in place of Quint
Dungeon Master (GM): ok 2nd watch looks like we may have something, being close to a busy area, some jungle beast may not come by so lets see what i roll   (To GM):   25   Dungeon Master (GM): 5 ok Maevis spots what appears to be a huge crocodile approach the encampment   Shadowfax: Coal & Sheila: second watch is grax and rowan   GreyWolfVT (Grax): yeah.   Maevis Silverleaf The Half Elf Bard Says, "WAKE UP!! We have a CROCODILE!!"   GreyWolfVT (Grax): also the tokens on the map are the prior group   Balen: You know - the giant crocodile snack-sized dwarf...   GreyWolfVT (Grax): Rowan is also snack sizes sized he is a halfling   Dungeon Master (GM): ok so it was Rowan that spots the beast uh huh make your init rolls as this creature is looking for food!   WEAPON INITIATIVE ROLL: Crocodile (Giant) -A2 the Crocodile (Giant) , gets ready to make an attack move!
