Alright so this is a little hard to describe, but basically I want to make custom maps for my future campaign. As an artist I'd like to draw them myself and import them in as opposed to assembling them piece by piece. Although getting the grid size to match up is a little tricky. You'd think a grid of squares would match up with another grid of squares, but no of course not. Anyway, my actual question was: What scale and grid sizes should I keep in mind in my drawing program while I'm drawing? And what's an easy way to make the grid squares in the image match up with the grid squares on the roll 20 map page?

Quick answer: https://wiki.roll20.net/Best_Practices_for_Files_on_Roll20#Images_and_Animations Additional detail, when you import an image with a grid already in it you often find that the grids used are 2+ pixels wide, this makes them difficult to perfectly align due to the fact that the Roll20 grid is a single pixel in width... sometimes best fit is all you'll accomplish. Alternatively use images with no grid on them or line them up as best you can and set the grid in the VTT to be transparent so you can benefit from grid snapping without the double line visual blemish. Roll20 grids use a 70x70 pixel per unit scale... most marketplace contributors will do their maps at 140x140 however to ensure that the quality remains even under a zoomed view.
Thank you! I did considered that just drawing without a grid in the image would be an easy solution, but was still unsure which scale to work in. Also thank you for the wiki link, the title of that page wasn't immediately obvious to me that it would have a helpful answer. Nevertheless I appreciate it.

This might also be of interest if you are planning on creating your own art: https://wiki.roll20.net/Creating_Marketplace_Assets Again, it's not exactly titled to draw the eye of someone doing personal mapping but covers some of the points I made in a bit more detail :)
Thank you!

The grid is 1 pixel grid lines, which might be why it's not lining up properly for you.

easy answer: make each grid square 140 pixels.
