Wotc xanathars chaos bolt

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this observation, or if it can even be resolved. When casting the spell chaos bolt, there are a couple of issues. First, it allows u to choose the slot level u intend to use AFTER casting the spell. So if the spell hits with the attack roll, then u can be like, yup I cast it at 7th level. Vice versa if u find out the attack roll doesn't beat the targets AC, u can then declare that u intended to cast it at 1st level (not wasting a higher level slot). The second issue is a consequence of the first issue. If u never hit with the spell, u need to manually remove your spell slots, because not getting to roll damage leads to the slots not being removed automatically. Not a big issue IF u remember to do it and play with those that are less likely to milk this oversight.

Hi Kyle - Thanks for reaching out! Chaos Bolt has been purposefully set up this way for easily determining damage type (acid, fire, ice, etc.) during the roll process. However, as a workaround, you can always select to automatically roll damage from the sheet's settings page. This will force the user to select the spell slot when first casting the spell. Apologies for any trouble or inconvenience with that spell's setup!
