I was able to gift $10 to my dm so he could purchase premium. Now I am talking to the other players in my group to chip in to buy him books. If 5 of us gift him $10 at the gift subscription page can he use those $50 in the marketplace? EDIT: Maybe there is just an option to send a giftcard that I cant find?

I believe the gift sub is only usable for subscription and not for marketplace purchases.

Pat is correct - the means for gifting marketplace items to other players requires heading to the marketplace item and using the "Gift" button on that item's page.
