I recommend just clicking "Create New Game" (it's free, and your game will only have just-you-alone in it). Poke around. Test it. Go to the Journals tab within your game. Click "Add New Character". It will show you a totally blank bio page. Click "Edit". You'll see where you can type whatever you want, and put a picture, for example try putting the picture of 1 of your characters, and type a few bits like their name. BOOM! Now you have created your own character sheet, without hiring anyone. As far as programming automation, making a cool HTML/CSS pretty character sheet, or using the Attributes tab to save stats that can be used automatically in dice roll mechanics --- that's another step, and that's your goal, that's in your future as you move to Roll20. But seriously just get started with creating a free, blank, empty new game, and start typing one Character with no automation, just a name and a picture, and then decide if (that) you like Roll20 and want to build up your game on here.
