[LFP][5E][Free][Live-text][Saturdays, 8pm GMT] Saga of the Jomsviking - recruiting players

Game System:  D&D Fifth Edition, Text only. Theme:  A hybrid of real world viking age history and norse sagas in a D&D fantasy wrapping. Flavor:  Raiding, pillaging, looting (all that good stuff), in a brutal and realistic world where death is an ever present threat. If you are looking for an easy ride, then this game isn't for you. There will be a mix of roleplay, combat and exploration.  Audience: Seeking up to 6 players New players to D&D and Roll20 welcome Disclaimer: This campaign is not for the fainthearted. If you are easily upset by brutality, death, horror, or violence then this game isn't for you. I intend for this game to be a truly horrific experience for your characters where their ideals and spirit will be truly tested. I am also utterly unforgiving on your characters. If you get yourselves into a bad situation where the outlook is grim then expect there to be casualties. So long as you agree to this disclaimer you may post your application. About me: I have played D&D 5E for 4 years, mostly on play by forum. I can promise players the following: A commitment to the scheduled game time A long term project A commitment to follow the rules of 5e to the best of my ability A commitment to ensure everybody takes an active part in the story and nobody gets pushed to the sidelines A British sense of fair play :) Finally, I plan for this to be an engaging and worthwhile adventure that lets your imaginations run wild (with blood) Campaign Setting: "In the year 793 fierce, foreboding omens came over the land of the Albions, and the wretched people shook; there were excessive whirlwinds, lightning, and fiery dragons were seen flying in the sky. These signs were followed by great famine, and a little after those, that same year on 6th ides of January, the ravaging of wretched heathen men destroyed God's church at the Isle of Lindis." - the Anglo Saxon Chronicle The Norgeland city-states of Jomsborg and Trondheim have been fierce rivals for hundreds of years often fighting each other for control of what little arable land the peninsula provides. With the discovery of the fertile land of Albion a year previously, rulers of both cities are keen to one up the other and stuff their coffers with all the spoils the new island has to offer. Warriors of skill and devotion to the gods are called upon to take a great undertaking and cross the great northern ocean to the island of Albion. And there bring death and destruction down on the christian peoples in the name of Surtur, who through vision, presented to both rulers a glimpse of a future where the Norge lay claim over the known world. You play initiates in the legendary order of Jomsvikings. A deity worshipping organisation of skilled and formidable warriors who seek fame, glory and treasure in the name of the gods. Your reasons for joining are your own, but all initiates are required to prove themselves in an act of bravery and valour before they can call themselves, Jomsviking. One such opportunity presents itself before you now. The christian monastery on the Isle of Lindis lies on the western edge of the fearsome great northern ocean and is ripe for the picking. Riches await and should you fall, then let it be in glorious battle where the Valkyrie will carry you off to Valhalla. The Jomsvikings hold their members to a strict code of conduct, violation of which could result in expulsion or execution: The necessity of defending honor with violence Defend your Jomsviking brothers and sisters, as well as to avenge their deaths if necessary It is forbidden to show fear or to flee in the face of an enemy All spoils of battle are to be equally distributed Nothing is more glorious than an honourable death fighting one's enemies Nothing but death is preordained We find ourselves in a little known corner of the multiverse; a hybrid world of real life viking age history, norse sagas and fantasy. Characters and locations are based on real life history. The opening chapter is inspired by the  first viking raid  on the island of Lindisfarne, which heralded the beginning of the  viking age . The Jomsvikings were a semi-legendary group of vikings, the best of the viking-best and feared above all others. They were seen as the precursors to the later christian knightly orders. The quote at the start of this post is based on a real excerpt from the  anglo-saxon chronicle . The campaign will be set in a focused area of the world. This does not mean there isn’t a world outside the map. Feel free to use other real world locations in your applications in a manner that fits the game. The island of Albion has been partially explored at least along the coast and some initial trading has taken place. Magic is real and flows through the world via Odin, king of the gods. Game Rules: I will expect you to have read as a minimum the free  Basic Rules  before applying. If you have the PHB, even better. If you're thinking 'My God, who can be bothered to read this much?!’ then D&D probably isn't for you, especially live-text Roll20. Once you've read these rules you will be able to create a character sheet and take part in the adventure. Although not required, doing some basic reading on the  Viking Age  will greatly assist you in the character creation process. Official content only, no UA. Beginning at level 3. We will be using the standard array for ability scores - 15,14,13,12,10,8. Include the word ‘candle’ in your application. I will be using a botch table. Rolling a 1 can mean more than just bad luck! I expect you to be present and keep to the schedule throughout the live game. I place the same expectations on players as I do myself and we all need to be present in order for this thing to work. If you fall below this expectation without good reason you will simply be removed from the game. Your character posts should be more than a handful of lines. I'll expect to see some sensible embellishment, something nice to read that pushes the story forward and engages your fellow players. You are not just playing with the DM, you are also playing with your team. Posts should try to include the 4 core elements of pbp roleplay, a DESCRIPTIVE element, a HOOK (or ENGAGE) element, an ACTION element, and a MOTIVE element. I'll expect you to fully read each post made before yours as missing things can cripple the flow. I'll expect you to use a spellchecker. If you have a question or problem in game - just ask! However, as they say - the DM's word is final. To apply, post your application in the LFG post, here .
Space is open. See original post for further info. We play weekly, Saturday's 8pm GMT.
