CLOSED: LFG : first time with FATE !

Hi everyone ! I have yet to play my first game of Fate Core or Fate Accelerated, and for this first experience I'm looking for a one-shot session. I am not looking for a specific setting, but I am most comfortable with fantasy. My time zone is UTC+1 and I am available on evenings starting at 19:30 ; except on wednesdays. I will be happy to discuss the kind of game we will be playing, and I look forward to it.
I'm new too, but I am still reading the core rule book, albeit I am done with the accelerated version. If you want,we could get down together and try to come up with an intriguing fantasy story, preferably one set in the witcherverse or that of the song of ice and fire(i.e game of thrones). Henceforth perchance we could bring others on board, but, hey, who knows?Hope to her back from you.
Hi, I'm also still new to FATE, but a game set in UTC+1 is an opportunity I can't ignore. I have started reading FATE Condensed. So, if you guys would like to figure things out together, I'd be happy to be part of the group.
Welcome aboard Dan; Jean has not yet replied so we can try starting off. We are all new here so frankly, any aspect put forth is of import. Time zones are of little consequence, unless staying up late stresses  you out (I tried but placing the terrible puns was too irresistible). Honestly, for me there is as much joy in creation as there is in playing so reach out.
Hi you two, We might need another person to have at least 3 players and a gm (and to start playing). But nothing shall prevent us to discuss what we want to do ! Marmalade suggested the Game of Thrones and Witcher universes. My knowledge of the former is non-existant, but I know some stuff on the latter (haven't read the books, played one and a half games). I am still opened to both of these worlds, as long as you do not demand me to have extensive knowledge of them. As for staying up late, I can't commit to it during the week. Despite the quarantine, I have online lectures to attend and work to do. For most days, I can't stay up past midnight UTC+1. But I have no such limitations on friday and saturday nights. Shall we begin a pleasant argument over the setting/scale/issues/aspects/places/characters ? Also, what system do we actually want to use ? Core, Accelerated, or Condensed ?
Game of thrones I have extensive knowledge of but Witcher I'm very limited knowledge of.
I am free all through the week up until he quarantine is lifted. The only downside is that I live in GMT -2.30 so I am 3 and a half hours behind you. As for genre and game, those were just examples albeit example settings I would enjoy to indulge myself in. Pick a time when we can discuss it.
Hey, I'm not very familiar with either ASOIAF/GoT or the Witcher universe, but have the games of the latter on my want-to-play list. Still, I'm confident I can create an armed alchemist who hunts monsters in a racist world for one session.  This week I'm pretty busy - how about next week for our session? I'm in favor of using either Accelerated or Condensed (because they are shorter).
No fair. I put dibs on the witcher.
Hiya! I have been following this thread and I may be interested in becoming involved. I have a lot of Roll20 and FATE experience and I can (and prefer to) GM. However, I am not interested in Epic (or Dark) Fantasy aka Witcher or GoT. If the group wants my involvement, we will need to change genres. I think Epic Fantasy is handled adequately by DnD 5e ... which I have been GMing for several years now on Thursdays. I can play on Tuesdays at noon US Pacific which I think is 6 PM UTC+1 ... but double-check my work. I can be flexible. A "one-shot" will last 1-3 session which will be no longer than 3 hours each. The number of sessions will be determined by story, interest, and COVID. I run FATE as a story game ... very different from DnD. FATE has no players ... you are all Co-GMs. You will have (and be expected to exercise) great creative control in making setting, story, and scenes. Shy folks can be quiet but you must partake in the creative creation of the game. It's part of the fun of FATE. I call FATE the "TV Show Game" because we are making a TV show or, in this case, a movie. You are not trying to "Win a Scenario" ... you are trying to "Create a Story About Winning a Scenario." Its a different feel than DnD because, sometimes, you will want your character to fail or suffer set-backs because it is good story. Lotsa DnD players cannot make this switch in mindset. Ultimately, this is Jeannot's game so I will let them lead the discussion about me taking on the role of GM and changing genres.
I agree with you Cutter as this was the main reason I decided to investigate fate which inevitably led to my taking an interset in and leanring it. I was introduced into ttrpgs via dnd 5e, but it didn't take long before I learnt that for most  people it was just a series of dice rolls and mechanisms(we called it rule-playing) rather than actual roleplaying. I mean typically the game never calls out for personality traits, alignments and backgrounds to come into play. Nevertheless high fantasy has always been my favourite genre but hey I am down to anything. I was just hoping to revive my former witcher dnd game with a couple of friends that died out due to there being too much a need for incorporation and creation of rules, as we figured out that with every rule and tweak and homebrew we brought into the game, it became less and less like dnd. We even forwent the rule book, just carrying around stacks of handwritten rules.
Hi Cutter, What you just described seems to be exactly what I am looking for with FATE. I will gladly let you assume the role of gm. And after some research, I found out that I am actually in the UTC+2 timezone. A game starting at noon for you will start at 9PM for me. This is close enough to my usual role playing experience and will not bother me. As for the genre we will explore, I am open to anything.

Since this is short notice and I have conflicts, a game today is not possible. Let's try for Tuesday, April 7 at 11 AM USA Pacific (UTC-7). Before I arrived, the group was discussing media sources that might influence the game. In this case, I am defining Media to be a book, a movie, a TV show, a video game, a song, or a poem. It does not matter if other players are familiar with the Media you choose since we can look it up online. If you are interested in playing, please list one piece of Media that you would like to see influence our game. You are not necessarily choosing a setting, just an influence. Our Media so far: Marmalade = Witcher (TV Show / Book / Game) Cutter = Red Dawn (Movie) ... the 1984 version Whose next? What Media do YOU want to influence our game? Players will be provided a link to Join the campaign after providing a Media influence. [EDIT] I originally posted this with the wrong time ... I posted my DnD group's time! The current time is correct.
To clarify this part a little bit ... we are not going to be choosing between the different Media ideas. This is not a competition to choose a genre. We are going to combine and mash-up all the influences from our Media that we care about into one setting that incorporates the best from every Media suggestion. It's easier than it sounds and I have done it before. Again, we are not choosing between Witcher and Red Dawn and ??? and ???#2. We are going to make something that is Witcher-ey and Red Dawn-ey and ???-ey and ???#2-ey ... a fusion of all of our wants and ideas. Again, not a competition. Cheers!
So, a group of teenage witchers fighting Nilfgaardian communists in a post-apocalopytic world with the impending doom of wights looming overhead amid social unrest and competition for the high throne. Sounds fun.
I have been scratching my head about the media I would choose to influence our game, and I have finally made my decision. I remember fondly the 2002 Disney movie Treasure Planet for its lighthearted space swashbucklery. It made space travel more lively and knew how to pack it with action and adventure. I'll admit that the movie's aesthetics also played a big part in winning my heart.
I am interested in playing in a game based on Treasure Planet. Please let me know if I can join.
count me in then
Hey Cutter, thanks for taking the lead. I thought a while about the piece of media I wanted to propose. Since you included songs and poems I want to try that. I propose "No Heaven" from Champion, because it depicts the interesting mental state of being unable to believe in the possibility of a better world while still finding meaning in all of the concepts belonging to the idea of a better world. The song either shows someone able to accept the corrupted reality they live in or someone who is in constant denial about the possibility that it is them themselves that makes a better world impossible. I enjoy that image. Also, the song is catchy.

Great! So our game will be heavily influenced by the following Media choices: Jeannot = Treasure Planet (Movie) Marmalade = Witcher (TV Show / Book / Game) Cutter = Red Dawn (Movie) ... the 1984 version Daniel = No Heaven by Champion (Song) I am GMing DnD today but I will send out join links to the campaign ASAP and update our status to a "real game" in Fate Corps' list. The next step involves answering one short question about your Media. The answer will take only two sentences and five minutes. I will take care of that in the campaign forums. After that, we will play on Tuesday, April 7. Although you will only be required to answer one more question, I am going to build the setting with a group of volunteer players using the campaign forums. Participation is 100% optional and I will finish anything left undone by players. Again, I have done this before and it works. Reminder ... this is a one shot lasting 1-3 sessions. If the setting is too improvised and outlandish for your taste, then it will be over soon. At least, you will learn FATE Accelerated. Cheers!
