I am looking to start a Starfinder campaign for the first time. Looking through the pregenerated characters I can see they start with  high skill ranks, rank 3 or 4 in some cases at level 1. I thought a skill rank could not exceed a character level or am I not understanding something?

Looking at the rules, I see it says that if you have at least one rank in a class skill, you gain a +3 bonus, so at 1st lvl that sounds right. Don't know the system  really, but seems like things are as they should. Or maybe you're looking at the final number where the ability score modifier is also accounted for?
