The party rests at Greenest for the night, and the next morning is prepared to proceed. Governor Nighthill asks that they go after the cultists, whose trail can be easily followed to the southeast. He would like 1) any additional information on the cult that can be found, 2) the rescue of the monk Leosin Erlanthar, and 3) recovery of as much of the town's valuables as possible. The town has nothing left to offer as a reward but he will happily give a share of any recovered loot, and will also put in a good word with prince Chelnadatilar. The party sets out, and soon spies a cookfire as the grassland begins to give way to rocky terrain. They find a group of cultists and kobolds who have stopped for a meal in a boulder-strewn area. Choosing quickly to attack, the party makes short work of them. One is captured, but knows little except that some prisoners have been taken to the cultists camp. Another half-hour or so down the trail, Malkior's hawk familiar spots a waiting ambush! Carefully moving away from the trail, the party ambushes the ambushers. Quick work is made of several cultists, but the veteran soldier leading the ambush proves a more difficult foe. He is eventually overcome, though, and surrenders when it is clear that defeat is inevitable. Unfortunately, no one in the party is skilled enough in interrogation to obtain much useful information...all they learn is that there are prisoners at the camp who are forced to do manual labor. Rather than killing the prisoners, the party chooses to return to Greenest and turn them over to Governor Nighthill. He is pleased with the additional information, places the captives in the town jail, and expresses hope that some of these other prisoners might be missing Greenest townsfolk. The party rests for another night and can proceed with the investigation of the camp in the morning.
