is the erata update in the 5e PHB?

Yes, compendium is auto-updated. That doesn't affect any previous copied examples to character sheet. For instance, if you have previously dragged the old version of the spell to a sheet, it's still the old, incorrect version, but you can drag a new corrected version from your compendium.

Or look up the entries in the Compendium and manually copy whatever is different. Wasn't the errata fairly small, mostly affecting just a couple of spells?

In the PHB, there were only two errata added. The bulk of that document is from the 2018 release, which was updated on Roll20 in 2018. The only items on the document with the [New] tag were Heavy (p. 147), and Rogue Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher (p. 98). There were other changes for Xanathars and Mordenkainen, but only Xanathar's would be likely to affect players: two class options were clarified, and 4 spells. So only four spells might need to be corrected, unless these characters haven't been updated in a couple of years. Spells affected: Healing Spirit, Holy Weapon, Life Transference, Mind Spike
