If I want to create my own compendium

I don't know if I want to write an entire compendium but I thought it would be nice to describe some things like what species are like and how magic works. Is there a place in Roll20 where I can write something lengthy to share with players?

The only option you have is to use handouts. As a Pro user, you could also write a script-based database, and have it create and destroy handouts as needed, or print to chat, but still, you're effectively just creating handouts. There's nothing like the Compendium for users yet, though roll20 say they are working on custom compendiums.
Thank you. That's what I wanted to know.
What kind of files can be uploaded into handouts? PDF?

Roll20 basically accepts image files. you can upload individual pages of a pdf, but they'll be treated as an image, and its not ideal. If you are planning to upload text, it's best to format it outside of roll20, then copy and paste it into a handout.
Thank you.
Custom Compendiums ... that sounds like it's going to be what I need for my Charactermancer, too ... I wish there was somewhere where we could spy on a progress bar of how close they are to releasing such a feature. :)
Maybe have a look at the suggestion forum and give it a vote. ;)
Thanks for the link! Done.
