In the morning, the party retraces their steps along the trail of the cultists and come to the camp. But they find it abandoned and stripped of all useful items. Only a small group of hunters remain, who are remarkably uncommunicative, but do at least relate that there are still kobolds and cultists in a large cave near the back of the camp. Entering the cave, Ulrik the dwarven cleric immediately draws the ire of a pair of cultist guards. He falls quickly, but the others are able to overcome the guards and revive him with a potion. The party proceeds more carefully after that, and finds an empty storeroom where it appears the looted valuables used to be stored. It seems they have been taken away, along with the rest of the camp. The next room proves to contain more cult guards. Two are quickly overcome but several more run into the next room, and make their stand there. This is Mondath's room, the purple-wearing cleric who had led the assault on Greenest. But even here on home ground, she proves no match for the adventurers. The guards are defeated and Mondath barely escapes alive, by using a hidden slide to descend deeper into the cave. A bit of scouting by Malkior's hawk familiar reveals that she has fled to a shrine room, decorated with dragon murals. Also present is the half-dragon Cyanwrath. Exercising restraint, the party chooses not to immediately follow her, instead seeking another route. They also find a prisoner, the monk Leosin, who had been held by Mondath. He is grateful for the rescue, and informs his benefactors that the cult has a clutch of dragon eggs which are evil and must be destroyed. The adventurers choose to set Leosin up in safety in one of the abandoned cultist huts, and after a short rest return to the cave. Not wishing to walk into a trap by taking the slide to the shrine, the group explores other routes through the cave. They pass through a mushroom garden, a cloud of bats, the garbage dump, a meat locker, training grounds for guard drakes, and kobold barracks. Other than a small group of kobolds and one falling rock trap, the journey is uneventful. Soon enough they stand in the hallway outside the shrine where Mondath and Cyanwrath await. A booming voice greets Lariat as she approaches the entrance, challenging her to a rematch of their single combat at Greenest. She charges in, and the battle is joined. Meanwhile, Ulrik and Malkior battle Mondath and a remaining guard. Before long, though, Malkior decides that Cyanwrath is the greater threat and targets him with magical missiles. This interference in his duel enrages the blue half-dragon and he charges blindly after the mage! Malkior flees and Ulrik does his best to help, but Cyanwrath's lightning breath proves too much and the mage is knocked unconscious. Fortunately for him, Ulrik is able to revive Malkior and together they just barely manage to defeat Cyanwrath. Meanwhile, Lariat batters Mondath enough that the cult cleric surrenders, begging for her life. Seeing that Mondath is no longer a threat, Lariat pursues a stray guard into the adjoining room - finding the dragon eggs! But this gives Mondath time to flee, which she does by climbing up the slide and quickly leaving the cave. She is long gone by the time the party is able to follow. But they do find a chest containing several valuable items that she left behind. The dragon eggs prove easy to destroy, and the adventurers find that they were black dragon eggs, near to hatching. One they keep intact and carry back to town, one they destroy and save the dead infant dragon for further study, and one they feed to a monster who had been hiding in the cave. That monster is appreciative of the meal, and goes off to the meat locker for further meals rather than attacking. The adventurers retrieve Leosin and return to Greenest, ready to report all that they have found to Governor Nighthill and prince Chelnadatilar.
