Getting Started

This may be more of a gaming question then a roll 20 question, but here goes. I'm trying to get started here, and I've found some interesting groups looking for players (Pathfinder). I have a rule book, which I am reading, but I'm confused as to how to get started, because I don't have a character yet, and that seems to be a pre-requisite. So, when and where do I make a character? Isn't that something I do with the other players and GM? I know this is a super noob question, but I'm not new to RPGs or gaming at all. I am, however, totally new to roll 20 and online virtual tabletop gaming. Any help would be appreciated.

Well the first step you just did and that is you joined us. The second step is find a group that has a game that interest you. There a lot of groups that welcome new players The third step is to get invited into the group. You have present yourself in a way that encourages the GM to pick you. Fourth step and on depends on the GM.
Stu, you'll probably want to hold off on making a character until you find a game to join. Just as in face to face games, GM's here at Roll20 all have their own ways of doing things. Some will ask you to make a character and submit it for consideration before even officially joining the game, and others will want you to wait and make the character along with all the other players. If you find a game you like the looks of, there's no harm in sending a private message to the GM and ask about specifics. Most of them welcome questions and even would prefer prospective players to ask in advance so they can be prepared. Since you're new to Roll20, if you haven't had the chance yet, I'd recommend taking a glace at the Roll20 Wiki . There's lots of information in there about the functions of the application and even some helpful starter videos for both GMs and players. There's also a Youtube channel with helpful tutorial videos that show how to use some of Roll20's features like the card decks and drawing tools: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5HmaK9YMBMKoBqYnCeoxpQ
Cool. Thanks for help!
