At the Carnath Roadhouse, the supervisor is a half-orc named Bog Luck, who puts everyone to work unloading crates from the wagons. Twinkle Tom notices that the cult wagons are unloaded only by the cultists, and Bog Luck locks their crates in a back room. After the unloading is complete, Bog Luck locks himself in the back room for the rest of the afternoon. Mella and Tom go up to the kitchen and talk to Gristle Pete, the grumpy cook who complains constantly about his ingredients, the ungrateful workers, the noise when he tries to sleep, the way everyone wants dinner all at once...Mella gives him a few silver pieces, which he pockets gratefully, but the gesture does nothing to stem the tide of complaints. The others wander about the roadhouse, familiarizing themselves with the area. When the dinner bell rings, Bog Luck emerges from the back room. While everyone else is eating, most of the group sneaks back downstairs. Brin is able to open the locked door while no one else is in sight, and the group finds that the cultist crates have all been painted with a special symbol. But they have little time, as others have begun to finish dinner and would soon discover their presence, so are forced to re-lock the door in hopes of coming back later. As night falls, everyone is assigned a room and the roadhouse falls quiet. Tom and Jamna sneak downstairs and once again open the locked door...only to find several very surprised lizardfolk! They are taking the cult crates, going through a hidden trapdoor and into a tunnel leading to the swamp. Tom convinces them that he is part of the cult and they do not raise an alarm, though they're not interested in his help. Tom goes back upstairs to get the rest of the group... ...and the cleric trips on his way down the stairs, making a loud noise that wakes Bog Luck! The half-orc comes out demanding to know what the adventurers think they're doing. Mella attempts to put him to sleep but her spell is ineffective, so Tom quickly moves to intercept him. He explains to Bog Luck that they are with the cult and just assisting in moving the crates, and is so persuasive that the half-orc is completely swayed and simply returns to his room. With Bog Luck out of the way, the party follows the lizardfolk through the tunnel and into the swamp. They find a trail, and though unable to keep up with the swamp-born lizardfolk, the trail is clear. Thanks to Mella scouting ahead in the air via her bandalore's fly spell, they are able to avoid any swamp creature attacks. After a difficult, muddy day of slogging through swamp terrain, they find a campsite complete with several canoes. The party is just about to settle in for the night when three canoes containing nine lizardfolk come toward the camp. Thinking quickly, the entire party disguises their canoes with swamp grasses and hide underneath. The lizardfolk come into the camp, complaining about how the "dragon kneelers" are making them go back to look for more crates. They nearly discover the hiding adventurers, but Luna uses her druid magic to distract them. Eventually, most of the lizardfolk head down the trail toward the roadhouse, leaving only two guards by the canoes. Luna and Tom are easily able to sneak around and knock them out. The party takes an hour to rest before continuing...it will be dark, but there's little choice with another group of lizardfolk sure to return in only a few hours. While resting, Tom and Mella question the captured lizardfolk. One of these is named Snapjaw and claims that he wants to help the adventurers, in return for their removing the "dragon kneelers" from the lizardfolk's lives. By this he means the cultists, who are forcing the lizardfolk to work for them, as well as bringing in the hated bullywugs and forcing the two races to work together. The group decides to trust Snapjaw, and he leads them in their canoes through the darkness. Along the way, they narrowly avoid an encounter with a "weed that walks" - a shambling mound that eats anything and everything in its path. As they near Castle Naerytar, Snapjaw convinces several lizardfolk guards (with Mella's help) that the adventurers are here to start a revolution and will throw off the yoke of the cult. The guards excitedly go to spread the word to the rest of the lizardfolk. Meanwhile, Snapjaw hides the party in a lizardfolk hut so they can get some rest. He also shares with them a map of the castle, and the information that the "dragon kneelers" mostly use the keep and the southwest tower, while the bullywugs use the southeast tower and a cave under the northwest tower. When they awake late in the day, the lizardfolk will be ready and waiting for their heroes to lead them against the oppressor cultists. The adventurers had better have a plan!
