The adventurers awake from a difficult night of rest. Half the party had a very odd dream about an old man sending them to investigate the Red Wizards of Thay, and upon finding a letter from the "dream", aren't so sure it wasn't real after all. Also, discussion with Snapjaw reveals that a black dragon lives somewhere in this swamp. But this information can't be allowed to interfere with their mission to track the cult and their looted treasure, so they press on through the swamp in canoes, with Snapjaw navigating. Their boating skill is put to the test when Snapjaw spots a "weed that walks" ahead - a dangerous shambling mound that devours all in its path. And that skill is found lacking, as they are unable to steer clear. But Jamna is able to slow the mound's advance with her Ray of Frost, allowing even their floundering efforts to pull the canoes ahead and out of range. Soon after, they encounter lizardfolk sentries, on watch for Castle Naerytar. With a little assistance from Ulrik, Snapjaw is able to convince them that these adventurers are mighty warriors here to help free the lizardfolk from the Cult of Dragons! The guards excitedly go to gather all the local lizardfolk for this glorious revolution. The party arrives at the castle, does some reconnaissance thanks to Malkior and his flying broom, and settles in with the lizardfolk for the night. Early the next morning, the lizardfolk gather and Lariat leads them into the castle! The bullywug guards at the gate are overwhelmed easily, and they push onward, leaving only a few to hold the gate. Bullywugs flee before the advancing lizardfolk, but before long they find a well-armed group of other lizardfolk barring their way. The two factions hurl insults and are near to trading blows, but Ulrik intervenes, convincing these new arrivals that this revolution is best for all. United, the lizardfolk sweep onward, clearing bullywugs and cultists from their path. But while they are occupied, several cultists emerge from the southwest tower and engage the adventurers. One of them is Frulam Mondath, the same cult leader who led the assault on Greenest and had fled the dragon hatchery. Her allies are powerful and the ensuing battle is difficult. Lariat loses consciousness, but the others are able to hold the line long enough for Malkior to unleash a fireball that quickly ends the conflict. The castle is soon fully under the control of the lizardfolk. The party takes some time to rest and recover, as well as searching through the rooms that the cultists had been using. They find several valuable items, including a book of spells for Malkior that had been the property of the Red Wizard Abzara Jos. Some of the valuables they distribute to the lizardfolk, who are extremely pleased and pledge to assist their revolutionary leaders however they can. Some cultists and many bullywugs have escaped, though, into a cavern under the northwest tower. After resting, the adventurers carefully follow them underground. They find plenty of bullywugs, and are able to speak with their leader, the shaman Pharblex. Despite Ulrik's best efforts, Pharblex refuses to settle for a peaceful solution, insisting that he would be satisfied only with the elimination of the lizardfolk so that bullywugs could dominate the swamp. Seeing this, Lariat attempts to cow the bullywug with intimidation, but that only causes him to send his minions to the attack! But they are weak, easy fodder for Malkior's spells and Jamna's cunning strikes, and the adventurers soon fell Pharblex himself. The remaining bullywugs flee in terror, and the battle is won. A search of the caverns finds yet more spell books for Malkior, as well as a fog-filled cave which proves to hold a teleportation circle. This must be how the cultists fled with the rest of their loot. The party spends one more night at the castle under the protection of their lizardfolk allies, planning to continue their quest to follow the cultists on the next day.
