Dumb Question: Why can't invited players automatically generate their character sheet and apply tokens?

I mean, it seems like it would be a default setting. I've got bigger fish to fry than set up all the bells and whistles for the players. I know I'm probably very frustrated from having to go from an empty table, a ruler tape, and some miniatures to a digital space, but this is far more frustrating than I had expected it to be.

I'm not a dev, so I can only hazard a guess that it allows a game creator/gm to control what is added to their game. They are the one who has to keep everything organized. It can also prevent some degree of vandalism. Not everyone games with friends they've known for years. Depending on your subscription level, users can also create their own characters and use the CHaracter Vault to get them in. Most modules come with All Access vault privileges.

I guess the simple answer is I'll need to try and figure out how more of the systems work. Since I'm not running with a game that's supported by Roll20 I figure, eh, everyone will just put their figures out and we'll do it like before but with better maps.

You can add the right amount of character sheets and have them be "shown:" "all players" and "can edit": "all players", which would mean there are empty character sheets for players when they join the game. If your players already have joined the game, you can assign them their individual sheet. Another reason not to allow them to assign tokens might be permissions-based?If a token image comes from a player's library, the GM has no control over it. The player might delete it, or their account. I assume the API can control an image that came in through the vault? Just not Marketplace images?

If you went pro subscription there is an api script that automates the sheet adding and assigning. It is called "Welcome Package". That is something to think about also.
