A knock spell by Malkior easily opens the control room door, sized by giants though it is. Ulrik uses silence at the same time to avoid revealing their presence to the lower levels. Inside, metal gleams and gems shine on the magnificently decorated controls, and the walls themselves seem to vanish as cloud giant magic reveals the castle's surroundings. A dozen or so control runes appear to float in midair, but before using any of them Malkior senses another presence in the room. The spirit of a cloud giant inhabits this room, and she is aware of them! The spirit's name is Esclarotta, and she tells the adventurers that she is the deceased wife of Blagothkus, lord of the castle. She took over as the castle's spirit when she died, and now she controls it on behalf of her husband. But she has no love for the cult and its allies, and confesses that her husband's alliance with them confuses her. Ulrik promises her that the party is here to battle the cult, not the giants. They will speak to Blagothkus, and relay her concerns. Proceeding back down the stairs, they emerge into Blagothkus' throne room to see the giant in conversation with several cultists! One of these, an elf named Borngray, accuses Malkior (who is still in the Red Wizard robes) of being an imposter and encourages Blagothkus to take the party prisoner. But Malkior is able to convince the giant that he has important matters to discuss in private, thanks to some magical help from Ulrik and a strategic name-drop of the giant's wife, Esclarotta. After Blagothkus sends the cultists away, he listens to the party's account of their adventurers against the cult. Blagothkus explains that he was only helping the cult in order to increase the strength of the chromatic dragons to the point where the divided giant clans would need to unite in order to defeat them. He regrets not keeping the spirit of his wife informed of his plans and promises to correct this immediately. Further, what the adventurers have related about the state of the cult has convinced him that the time has come to put his plan into action. He will break his contract with the cult, which was to take the cultists and their treasure south to the Well of Dragons. Instead, he will pilot the castle north, to find his giant comrades and recruit them to join in the battle against the cult. The cultists and treasure currently on board will only help to strengthen his case to the giant clans. This outcome fits nicely into the goals of the adventurers, so they decide that the time has come to take their leave. Leaving the tower, they retrace their steps on the way to the front gate. But in the courtyard below the giant's tower, they are accosted by the cult. Led by Rezmir, accompanied by Borngray and the Red Wizard who escaped earlier, the cultists howl with anger and attack! The battle has been joined for only a few moments when the castle shudders and begins to lift away from the ground. Recognizing that escape is just as good as victory in this battle, the party breaks away from their enemies and runs for the main gate. Unable to overtake the sprinting adventurers, the cultists fall behind. But one last hurdle awaits - the castle has already lifted a good 40 feet off the ground! Malkior can fly on his broom, Jamna makes an acrobatic leap to the ground, Lariat's athleticism is up to the challenge of the fall, but Ulrik is in trouble...40 feet might as well be a mile for a heavily armored dwarf cleric. Malkior has a spell for this situation, though, and flies near to touch the cleric and polymorph him into a hawk! The transformed cleric is thus easily able to fly to the ground. The adventurers watch the castle fly away to the north with the satisfaction of a goal accomplished. As far as the village is concerned, they are the same group that helped to guard the treasure shipment earlier that morning, and so no one challenges their presence. Taking rooms at the inn, they fall into a well-deserved slumber.
