Tricky exploding rolls for a homebrew system?

Hi! Just gotten roll20, which we want to use for our favourite homebrew system, but we've run into some problems expressing the dice rolls for the character sheet. The basic roll is Feng Shuei-like, i.e: 1d6! - 1d6! + skill. So far, so good. But we also want to show in our roll template when the original pre-exploded dice are equal, i.e. both are 1, both 2, etc, as some of those equal pairs may have special effects - especially double 6 for the two original dice, which may make the roll a crit or failure, depending on the final target number. We also have something like 5E advantage and disadvantage. A in "confident roll" the minus sign in the roll may be flipped to make the highest die of the two exploding dice count as the positive die, and similarly a "stymied roll" makes the higher roll the negative one. Can we make these dice rolls work with our in-progress character sheet? Also, as we use one die as the positive and one as the negative one - is there any way to make the colors different when using the 3D Dice?

If the dice weren't exploding dice you could do this with a matrix in a custom rolltemplate, but with an open ended roll thats much less possible, You see you'd need to build a number of entries equal to the range of possibilities on one die multiplied by the range on the other die. With 1d6-1d6, that would take 36 entries (each of which would be multiple lines of code).  With exploding dice, you'd need many hundreds to satisfy the most common range, and there'd still be occasional rolls outside the programmed possibilities. There's a way to use a recent roll20 glitch to get you some of the way there. You can display the original dice values in your output, and then manually do whatever you need with them. that way you can handle advantage and disadvantage. As always, its much easier when people post their actual dice code, but I'll illustrate with a simple default rolltemplate example: &{template:default} {{name=DieRoll}} [[ [[1d6!]] - [[1d6!]] + ?{Modifier|0} ]] {{Positive Die=$[[0]]}} {{Negative Die=$[[1]]}} {{Result=$[[2]]}} The $[[0]] items allow you to retrieve the individual inline rolls and place them where you want. You cant do anything with them, except to display their values. You cant compare $[[0]] to $[[1]] to see if they match for example. The roll part above is not inside {{ }} rolltemplate brackets, so it wont be visible in the output. It has to be before any of the $[[0]] brackets. If you want the negative die to show as a negative value, change the roll part  [[ [[1d6!]] + [[-1d6!]] + ?{Modifier|0} ]] Regarding the 3d Dice roll: i don't remember seeing any way to change the appearance of the dice, but I dont use 3d dice so maybe someone else does.

All the dice will roll the same color and that color is the same color as the player's color. Each player can change that by selecting the color on their avatar.  My kids use that kind of like a dice bag...when one color goes sour, they change their color to get "new" dice. LOL But, again, all the dice will be the same color per player.

Many thanks for the explanatory replies, and pointing us in the correct direction for our character sheet-to-be!

That's a pretty nifty way to have the feel of new dice :) Surely that deserves a place in the Stupid Tricks thread, rationality be damned! I am definitely pinching this after rolling 3 twos in a row last session (Halfling Luck making 2 the worst d20 outcome).
