Julio, I have sent you a private message regarding your post. You can find the private message system up in the top right corner (pink box). There are some game systems (such as D&D 3.5 or Pathfinder) that have free rules available to anyone. If you think that is your style of RP I would suggest looking for that information. Here are some resources for those game systems I mentioned: D&D 3.5 http://www.d20srd.org/ Pathfinder: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ (publisher's free rules) Also Pathfinder: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ (PFSRD, a bit more comprehensive in some cases) There are other free resources out there for beginners. I think (don't quote me on this) that D&D 4th edition has some free resources for the beginner. - Gauss
For another flavor of free game I recommend Mutants and Masterminds Third Edition: www.d20herosrd.com I'm sure there are more pretty near free systems out there. Tabletop RPGs are about groups of players having fun, do your part, share responsibility, listen and have fun.
John T. said: Buy GURPS, trust me, you will never play it, but neither will anyone else who ever bought it. Read it and you'll have something in common to talk about with nearly anyone in the gaming community you'll meet. One Second Combat Rounds = completely unplayable! This isn't true in the slightest and certainly isn't helpful to someone starting out. Julio - the best thing to do is to find a game through the Looking for Group search (right-most choice on the big blue bar) or the Looking for Group Forum and find a game that's recruiting players. I know there are occasionally games geared to absolute beginners with some regularity and most good Game Masters will gladly accept a new player - you have less to unlearn, if that makes any sense. If and what you need to buy is going to be specific to each game. It's likely you won't have to buy anything at first, but again, check with the Game Master of that game.
I play GURPS, so does most of the roleplayers I know. Where I live it's actually the second most popular system (it gets in right after World of Darkness) So "no one" is a bit of an exaggeration.
Julio, Dave, Asaram I apologize. I made a mistake, I was wrong, I'm sorry. I stand corrected. Asaram: You are the first person I know of who has played GURPS.
An understandable mistake though, since as I understand it which games are played varies a fair deal depending on country/area etc. :) And that is a bit of a surprise actually, but considering I have friends who have RPd for ten years but never used a D20 system... bit of a niche hobby I suppose. Do you dislike the system btw, or just never found anyone to play with?

@ John T. : I've played and ran GURPS since it came out as Man to Man booklet. I had an 8 yr campaign with my old group of 6 players. I knew a lot of others that played GURPS across the country (USA). If it was not a popular system then why would it be on it's 4th edition and Steve Jackson still a strong company (as strong as any gaming company can be)?
GURPS has a fantastic amount of shelf appeal. Buying that first GURPS book is how I got started in the table top role playing game hobby.
I love the GURPS supplements, I buy them and convert them to my own system. They provide a wealth of good ideas. I don't like the actual game system though.
I should look into a GURPS supers setting book just to see if I can get inspiration for some ideas for the Mutants and Masterminds game I'm going to run in Avogadro's Number of unspecified time units.
You most definitely can. It's a good book. Also consider looking at their psionics books, they actually bring up a lot of the same style and theme that is found in mutants and masterminds.
I have the GURPS supers setting book. Its good for character ideas, but IMO GURPS breaks pretty horribly when doing supers. The higher the power level the worse it gets. Never tried M&M but I usually find that the Hero System does high power supers pretty well.
