Campaign Journal - Day #2 - June 18, 2020

It was a pleasant evening stay at the  Ghallanda  Inn, I always do enjoy the niceties offered by the halflings. However, I must not forget my mission. I have been working on something, tinkering and building. I think the designs are ready, now I just need to build it. I think it will be very useful, and I think Kodiak will like it. I'll need to get back to my shop soon to build it.     My associates and I gathered for breakfast, heavy eaters many of them are, but generally enjoyable. The inn was already fairly busy, given the early hour. Among the crew I noticed a couple of Dwarf travelers. Odd that they found themselves in this bar, at this time. I wonder if my father sent them. I tried to give them a good impression, but I for their intentions. Are they here to end my work?     Henry (Butterball) proved a valuable source of information, knowing where to find Alden  d'Orien , in the  Mithral  Tower, who was also fond of Unicorns. A Halfling Cassandra helped to guide our way to  Mithral  tower. Alden was fairly easily accessible, along with his  Kalashtar  assistant. Tari took the lead in speaking with Alden, and we learned a great deal. Simply, Alden was in over his head and got caught in with some bad people. His son Caden was indeed taken. I advised Alden that he needs to improve his security, I expect him to contact House  Kundarak  soon.      We were directed to a lift that would take us deep into the bowels of  Sharn . We did encounter a noble couple, a secret encounter which they were none too happy that we interrupted. Sadly, their names meant nothing to me, but I do know that they were royalty, the  ir ' in the name gave that away. I will need to keep an eye out for them, in case they make trouble for us in the future.     With some investigating (and some help form the little Gnome  Gnipity , we were able to fix the lift. It opened into a massive ruin, were we were quickly ambushed. I was completely caught unaware and fell before the goblins before I could blink. It was moments later that Sonn (I believe it was him) brought me back from the brink of death, it was an experience I will not soon forget. I must repay him for his kindness.     After defeating the goblins, we found Caden wounded and ill-treated. We returned him to his father where we were granted 35 GP each. We learned of a half-ogre named Gara who seemed to be the ring leader of this operation.  Gara appeared to have threatened Caden to force Alden to dig deep beneath  Sharn . Gara appeared to be looking for old magical schema's. I have learned much of this during my training (in fact, it's exactly what I'm building now, I hope the schema works). Looking for a schema deep within  sharn  cannot be good.     Alden advised us of a safe house, somewhere in  Tavick's  landing, as well as specifically stating that Gara is expected to be leaving via Lightning Rail in the afternoon. We had precious little time, so we immediately set out to find Gara. On route,  Vilroy  brought a sky coach with her to pick us up, offering to take us to Terminus station. At first, things appeared normal, but things became strange very quickly. She didn't appear to know things she should have, and she claimed to have told us things that she couldn't have possible known. If she did know these things, then she set us up. If she didn't know these things, then she's an imposter. I drew my crossbow before anyone else noticed. It certainly drew surprise from my colleagues, but they quickly caught on. I don't know what happened to  Vilroy . She may be dead.      Vilroy  was a  changeling , and was arranging an ambush.  Gnolls  few in and started raining arrows down against us. We were fighting for our lives. We worked together, helped each other, and I think we grew closer together as a team. I stood side by side with Kodiak, a beast of a man who isn't afraid to get into it. I respect him for that. He can teach me a great deal.     The sky coach almost crashed, luckily I was able to gain control of the coach, enough to keep it stable. We may need to find out who it belongs to, and ensure we return it, with an appropriate  finders  fee of course.
[Reprinting Kodiak's journal entry here:] Kodiak's Journal:  We stayed the night indoors in a building.   What a concept!  And when we woke up, there was Bacon!!!!.  I ate as much as i can and put some in my pockets for later.  I really need to get  an animal companion to share this with.  We went to talk to the guy whose son is missing.  He told us about an elevator.  We took it down and were attacked by goblins.  They surprised us.  We still beat them.   I knocked one guys head at least 50 yards. He'll know better not to take on a Bear Clan warrior and his friends.  I like these people.  They can fight.  That dragon guy has some bad-ass breath.   Even the squishy wizards can do a lot of damage with their magic.  Better stay on their good side. Gotta get the elf a better bow.   We found the kid.  He was OK, just hungry and scared.  His dad promised to pay us 47 gold each if we kept their names out of our written report.  Then he went back on his promise and only paid us 35 gold.  I don't like being lied to, but I now have more money than anyone in my village.  The joke's on him.  We don't file written reports.  And we never made any promises about our oral reports.  I'll let the smarter people handle the reports.   We found out the ogress named Dara or Gara was leaving on the midnight train to Georgia, or something like that with some arcane documents.  They have a safehouse near the raiil station.  On our way we met Sgt. Villroy on a flying boat who offered to take us there.  Thornduk pulled a crossbow on her. .I was shocked.  But he was really smart and figured out that she was not Villroy.  We fought gloriously against flying dog men while the dragon guy took out the Vilroy changeling. I got some good javelin practice but I kept missing with my axe.  I gotta get a better axe.  I impaled the last dog boy with a javelin ending the fight.  We now still have to go down to stop the ogress from leaving but we have a boat to get us there.  I should have Thornduk show me how to drive it.  .
Dear Diary- Well I’m glad that is over. I had no idea what the day held for me after waking up at the Ghallanda Inn. I stroll downstairs and eat with my party, notice a little extra shiftiness with the halflings working there speaking with Butterball in the morning along with some goblins sitting off alone but do any more subtle poking around or trust my gut? Nope. I’m more focused on getting a longbow and heading out to speak with Alden d'Orien and seeing what we can learn about his kidnapped son. I’m even more focused on that to the point when my party says, lets go get your bow and then we will go talk to Alden, I am all, no it’s ok I’m fine. I don’t know if the Undying Court was punishing me for my aloofness and stupidity but the rest of the day was a total dumpster fire. We get to Alden’s and his Kalashtar bodyguard or assistant, (not really important), gave us info about the someone named Gara, a half-ogre who was behind the kidnapping to put leverage on Alden to recruit several of the down and out Warforged to help dig up artifacts of some kind and once she found what she needed she would let his son go. The bodyguard confirmed with Tari that he figured the kid was as good as dead once Gara got what she was after. Tari shared that with us once we left. Also Tari looked to start being the face of the group too on this day. Ok, back to what happened, so we hop this elevator with medusa on it and head down….and down….and down… and once we get out of is this big excavation sight. I immediately notice a group of goblins waiting for us along with Gnipity but the rest of the party didn’t catch on soon enough so the goblins got the jump on the rest of the group. Thornduk took the worst of it almost passing on to the other side but was revived right before the battle ended. I did my part by snapping 4 bow strings and failing to do anything but stand in the back. I hate my short bow. I’m getting long winded. We find the boy and bring him back only to find out that Gara is could be at a safe house at Tavick’s landing so we immediately head over. On the way Vilroy shows up with a sky coach so we get on and on the way to Tavick Vilroy started running her mouth asking questions and blah blah blah to the point Thornduk calls BS and pulls his crossbow on her! Whoa, this guy is fun, might not be the play cards with if he can catch tells that quick though. So Vilroy jumps off the sky coach and a bunch of Gnolls on green disks come out of the sky, the Dragonborn jumps ship and things go crazy. I continue to contribute nothing to the battle except getting stuck by a Gnoll and almost bleeding out. When I wake the battle is almost all but over and once it ends with our opponents on the ground, we have gained a sky coach and are in need or rest but we have to get Gara before she takes off on the rail and this adventure ends.
Pilgrimage Report June 18th 2020. Mother, Father. Sorry to be writing to you so quickly, but I am currently engaged in a chase of a kidnapper who stole a young boy from his father. The kidnapper (an ogress) wanted the boy as leverage to use the father's connections. This city sickens me. But by Bahumat I will see that I leave it a better city than I found it. Anyway my comrades and I rescued the boy and returned him to his father. We have also fought against a changeling and an army of dog things. The changeling looked like my contact and had me fooled but, one of my friends saw through the deception. She led the sky carriage and I gave chase. But ultimately the killing blow goes to Tari. Man I pity anyone that has to engage her in combat. But hey I payed her back and took one of her enemies out. I gotta dash or else we will lose the kidnapper. I will share developments in my next report.
