Maps coming as black in player view.

Much like this 2 month old post here, I'm having trouble with black maps coming up in player view. I've messed around with Fog of War and Dynamic Lighting, turned on all the player vision options - with and without light - and generally done everything I've found through looking the problem up, but the maps are still coming up black. I'm using the Curse of Strahd module. I've logged in on a separate browser through a different account as a player to check these changes and nothing seems to be working. Is there a follow-up to that previous post or fixes anyone can figure out? Many thanks in advance for help!

Things to check:

1) make sure Fog of War is off

2) make sure the player token is on the objects layer

3) make sure the player token "has sight" turned on

4) make sure there is a light source visible to all players or that the player token emits light

Hi! Thanks for replying. I checked all those things and they're good to go but the problem still exists. Is it perhaps an issue with the token not being set up correctly? I have it so it can be controlled by both myself and my player account, but maybe I'm missing something there?

Screenshots can be really helpful for having others troubleshoot, if you're able!  Specifically screenshots of the Page settings (both Page Details and Dynamic Lighting tabs) as well as the Token Settings for the character and the Character Edit pages.

When you say that the maps are black, do you mean the player view is just showing a black screen and nothing is visible whatsoever?  Or are they able to see their token but everything else is black? Can they see all tokens placed on the page but not the map itself? What happens when you turn off Legacy Fog of War and Dynamic Lighting?  Have you also checked the Updated Dynamic Lighting tab to make sure of those settings?  FYI - there are two 'competing' dynamic lighting systems being used right now - the Legacy system on the Page Settings tab, and the Updated system on the Dynamic Lighting tab.

You could try selectively going to each layer, pressing Ctrl-A and hitting delete to see if that fixes anything (then press Ctrl-Z to undo) so at least you'd be able to troubleshoot which layer the issue is on.  E.g. maybe there's a token on the map or dynamic lighting layer that is causing issues.

These are screenshots I've taken with my other account joined as a player, looking at the same page (that's the black screen). This is a test map I've set up, but the results are the same on the Strahd maps as well. For this map, the player token is the only I've put on there. Fog of war I haven't had on since I first messed around with it, but I've trying out different things with dynamic lighting, both the legacy and updated. I've done the Ctrl-L hotkey on the token to see what the players would see and that shows the dynamic lighting working.

I placed player tokens on the CoS landing page and, while they show up on the player screen, I can't grab them even though I've made them controllable by the player account. That's one reason I think I might be doing something wrong assigning the token to a player, maybe?

Is the token linked to a character sheet? If it is, the permissions need to be set on the character sheet.

If you've been doing it directly from the token settings, try it through a linked character sheet and see if you get a different result.

I can't think of much else that hasn't been covered. Maybe make sure none of the character names have any punctuation in them, I'd even get rid of any spaces while you're troubleshooting. Maybe try another dummy account, or at least change the name, then delete and re-set the permissions - if that account can't even move a token assigned to it, on the token layer, something is stopping the permissions from working. That CoS landing page presumably has dynamic lighting switched off, so it doesn't look like a lighting issue.

I think the character sheet might be the problem. I'm having the players on tonight so I'll try to get it hashed out then. Thanks for everything! I'll comment back whether or not it works.

I've found that if the "Enforce Line of Sight" box is checked in the page settings, it causes the screen to go black for the players. If it is unchecked it shows the entire page.

Verify that the token is still linked to the proper character sheet, by double-clicking on the token on the map. A common error is to set up the default token in the wrong order, leading people to assume the token they pull from the character's name in the journal is actually linked to the character. Doings in the wrong order can lead to a default token that is just a graphic and not actually linked to the sheet. I can't tell for sure, because the first tab of the token settings is not one of your screen shots, but the lack of numbers in the bubbles, and the inability to control the token in player view leads me to suspect this.

I turned off dynamic lighting in the Page Details tab and turned on settings in the Dynamic Lighting tab. This, combined with giving tokens light individually, worked.
