The sundial shadows continue to change as the party moves through the maze, but some quick thinking by the rogue moves them ahead when she jumps onto the sundial itself. Then the monk runs up the hedge wall, accidentally triggering the final pathway and bringing them to the base of the tower itself. Behind them, the path is clear to leave, past the sundial and back to the village. At the base of the tower is the body of the cultist they previously saw flung from the tower's balcony above. There is also a magical circle, apparently the only entrance to the tower - no other entryway is visible. Al the monk flies up the tower to the balcony, but immediately has to hide below it as a group of cultists see him from within! One of them casts a spell and flies out himself, but the monk quickly knocks him from the air. The other cultists cast spells from above on the barbarian and rogue, but they quickly move to the magic circle and are teleported. The monk follows, leaving the enemies behind. The teleportation circle leads inside the tower, where another dead cultist lies on the floor. She was slain by a dragontooth dagger, implying that the cult is fighting among themselves - perhaps the work of the would-be defector Iskander. Investigation by Induris leads to the discovery of several symbols near additional magical circles. Pressing a symbol teleports everyone standing on the circle to another floor. Picking one at random, Induris presses the symbol of a flame... ...and the party is immediately set upon by nine cultists, who had been alerted from the earlier conflict and were lying in wait. In the melee, a cultist manages to teleport Bron to yet another room, with even more cultists! The battle is difficult and confusing as combatants teleport from one floor to another, and one cultist mage lands a particularly devastating blow which fells Al with a mighty blast of cold. But in the end, the party is triumphant, defeating all the cultists and reviving their companion. After a short rest at the base of the tower, they search all the bodies and find an hourglass-shaped key. Using it activates the teleportation circle in a different way, leading to the dungeon below the tower! Here there are three more dead cultists, and just beyond a room guarded by three elementals. This time the party is more prepared to fight a coordinated battle, and make short work of all three. Induris finds a chest afterward with several elemental protection scrolls. Moving on, the adventurers find a strange hallway that seems to pass through a vast star-filled expanse. Carefully staying on the path, they make their way to a door which leads to a library. As none of the party is a particularly learned academic, they can't make much use of the contents, but they do find a map of the Elemental Plane of Fire and a few books that will be valuable to the right collector. Induris finds a secret door, which leads to a room empty except for a strange crystal showing a scene from the Elemental Fire plane. The party leaves quickly before they can trigger any magical defenses. The strange hallway continues, leading to two doors and a corridor that leads to a room containing an efreeti. The party speaks to the efreeti, who tries to convince them to free him in exchange for help finding Iskander and the blue dragon mask. But the adventurers do not trust him and leave him imprisoned. This appears to be the right choice, for opening the other doors leads to finding the body of Iskander! He succumbed to his wounds before the adventurers arrived, but he still has the blue dragon mask, which they claim. On the way out, Bron returns to the efreeti and asks him to "Destroy the red dragon cult" in exchange for his freedom. The efreeti agrees, but as soon as Bron opens the cage, he flies away back to the Elemental Plane of Fire. Unfortunately the Cult of the Dragon is not devoted to any one color of chromatic dragon, so the efreeti used the barbarian's wording against him to avoid performing the task. When the party returns with the mask to the village outside the tower, they are met by a sight of massive destruction! An adult blue dragon, which they recognize as Lennithon - the same who attacked Greenest - is attacking the village. Induris puts on the mask and tries to command him, but there is no effect. Lennithon demands the return of the mask, and moves to attack, but the adventurers retreat to the magical maze. Unable to reach them there, the dragon continues his assault on the village, razing it to the ground and killing most of the inhabitants. Eventually he tires of waiting, and flies away. The adventurers are able to leave and return to Waterdeep, but with heavy hearts at the destruction and death they witnessed.
