Tom carefully scouted the area behind the waterfall, finding a wet and slippery cave entrance. Setting up a rope to help the others, he called them forward...but as they approached, the dragon leapt from his hiding place on the cave's ceiling and burst through the waterfall! He attacked with his poison breath, but the damage was minimal as the party had poison protection from their magic goblets. Tom quickly summoned a pair of giant vultures, which lasted long enough as a distraction for the party to regroup. Mella polymorphed herself into a gigantic T-Rex and moved to block the cave entrance. This did not stop the dragon from flying past and deeper into his lair, but she did take a bite out of his hide on the way! Slowly the adventurers advanced into the lair, looking for any sign of where the dragon had gone. They found a large cavern with a small underground lake in one corner, and signs of not just dragon but humanoid and ettin occupants. The dragon sat on an island in the lake, and on his back was an elven rider. As the party moved toward the lake, they were attacked from another direction by a group of humans and elves. Their weak arrows did little but distract the adventurers, but Brin nonetheless cast a confusion spell to neutralize them. Noram came forward and leapt onto the back of the still-polymorphed bard, and the two of them ran forward, splashing across the lake and confronting the dragon! The two titan creatures clashed with mighty roars, and though the dragon got the better of the battle, still he was badly injured. The polymorph spell broken, Mella fell to the ground, injured but not defeated. Wounded, the dragon and his rider dove into the water and did not immediately reappear. Perhaps they had used an underwater passage...
