The Council meets in urgent session in Waterdeep as the Harpers report the grave news that cult armies have gathered at the Well of Dragons. Chromatic dragons from across the land, hordes of cultists, and rebel Red Wizards fill the volcanic caves and tunnels beneath the caldera, and a massive temple to Tiamat has been summoned from the hellish realms. The final ritual to summon the goddess herself cannot be far behind! The Council Lords will each lead their armies to engage the cultists and dragons as best they can, together with the giants and metallic dragons. With the Draakhorn driving their enemies into a furor, though, their prospects are poor. The adventurers must enter the volcanic tunnels and stop it from sounding! Once that is done, the armies will be able to hold their own, and the party can turn their attention to rescuing prisoners and stopping the ritual to bring Tiamat into this world. All of the countryside surrounding the Well of Dragons has been destroyed, every settlement burned by rampaging dragons and cultist hordes. The armies of the Council advance, and the Cult forces come forth from the volcano to meet them. As battle is joined, the adventurers move off toward the volcano, looking for entrances. But they are almost immediately spotted by a red dragon, which dives down to investigate! He is not fooled by their pathetic attempts at disguise and attacks, but the adventurers are equal to the task and inflict great wounds, driving him to flee. Even this is futile, as the monk chases him down and stuns him out of the air! But this conflict has not gone unnoticed, so the party is forced to move quickly to avoid further unwanted attention. They approach one of the obvious tunnel entrances on the northwest side of the volcano. Here they find several cult guards, but the monk is able to convince them that they are needed at the battle lines. With the entrance now clear, the party proceeds into the tunnels. Following the overwhelming sound of the Draakhorn leads them to the chamber full of treasure meant for Tiamat's horde, guarded by a cultist and two flesh golems. Quick attacks fell the cultist and one golem, and Induris uses the fallen cultist's robes to order the other golem to stand down. Past the treasure chamber, they find the Draakhorn itself. A huge device carved from the horn of an ancient red dragon, it is being sounded continuously by an air elemental and guarded by a stone golem. The sound is so loud that it deafens the party, but that does not stop them from assaulting the elemental and golem! With those defeated, the sound stops and their hearing slowly returns. A patrol of cultists comes to investigate the sudden silence, but these also are defeated. With the Draakhorn silenced (for the moment), the adventurers continue through the tunnels. They find an exit leading to the caldera above, opening onto a large plaza in front of Tiamat's temple. In this plaza are five adult dragons, one of each chromatic color. As the party watches, prisoners are led from the temple toward the dragons, who bloodily rend them limb from limb! Unable to stop this horror, the party turns back, hoping to find another way into the temple. Retracing their steps, the adventurers exit the tunnels and head to the south. The battle still rages with advantage to the Cult, but with the Draakhorn silenced the Council forces are beginning to rally. The party heads south along the western side of the volcano, and at the southwest corner find a tunnel that looks unused. Inside it is clear that the cult has not been using this area. It leads to a collapsed and unpassable sinkhole in the caldera, but the collapse has also revealed an ancient shrine! Long before the Cult took control of the Well of Dragons, it was sacred to all dragons. This shrine has been buried for centuries, and within is the spirit of an ancient red dragonborn paladin. He speaks to the cleric, promising his help in the spiritual realm against the evil that now infests the Well. The spirit merges with a talisman that is taken by the cleric. Encouraged by this fortuitous meeting, the party continues through the tunnels. Eventually they come again to areas used by the cult, and find guard patrols leading prisoners to the slaughter! Without hesitation, Bron charges, leading the party to fell the guards and free the captives. From the prisoners they learn that many others, fifty or more, have already been sacrificed. Most of the prisoners are too weak to do anything but flee, but four are strong enough to stay. Taking robes from the fallen guards, and pretending to lead the four prisoners, the adventurers move into the Temple of Tiamat itself.
