This is a thread to see how much interest there is for a concept. This game would not start soon, maybe late 2020, early 2021 depending on response and scheduling. The idea is simply a game about living in feudal Japan that emphasizes the culture, particularly the traditional social roles and virtues. I am imagining a slice of life game that is much more character driven than plot-y/adventure-y. It would probably be a set of loosely associated PCs connected by location and social bonds. It would not be an everyone-in-every-scene kind of thing, more a semi-sandbox in this setting with individual character plot threads weaving in and out together very dependent on what specific PCs we end up with and what they are trying to do. The game would be Fate Core, I guess, with "Skills" and some other specifics intended to bring the conversation to focus around social roles and Japanese traditional virtue. Specifically I am thinking: Skills would highlight both sets of talents and the social background and access they suggest: Artisan , Bushi , Merchant , Mystic , Noble , Peasant , Priest , and Untouchable Additionally there would be 5 Virtue pairs. Each character would index 3 of 5 character Aspects to one end of one of these pairs: Courage <> Cowardice , Honor <> Shame , Enlightenment <> Indulgence , Honesty <> Deceit , Benevolence <> Malevolence. For example a High Concept might be s hameful samurai who has survived 100 lost battles . There would be a single Stress Track that handles the typical physical and mental stress thing and another called Harmony that captures the pressure, trauma, and peace of acting in line and against one's indexed Virtues and how those actions play out. I want a low magical setting but not a non-magical setting, so some dealing with spirits and ritual magic would be present if desired by PCs. These talents would use the normal Skills but require Stunts to unlock and Fate Points to use. We would all story tell together to make them feel very Japanese in flavor. I tend to frame most of my games in a Powered by the Apocolypse way. This just means I think of Actions in a miss, partial hit, hit manner. There is no real mechanical change, mostly just a system of principles to guide how to interpret roll results (managed by me). I also usually have an only-PCs-roll approach. Otherwise, this is normal Fate. That's it. Chime in with comments and questions if interested.
