Command button clickable but nothing happens

Sorry if this is a common question but I have this macro written: /me The Rat Man swings their sword! /r 1d20+4 [Damage](!sworddamage) with "sworddamage" being: /r 1d8+2 It works as I expect, the attack roll is executed then a clickable button for Damage comes up, but when I click the button nothing happens. I'm pretty new to this sort of thing so I assume it's something very simple i'm missing, thanks.  Included image in case my wording is poor:

Your syntax is a bit out... you want to use the macro calling 'trick': [Macro](!
#MacroName) The ! is an API call and tells the VTT to not print that line to chat, putting the
in there forces a new line when the button is pressed which will then run your #macro command: /me The Rat Man swings their sword! /r 1d20+4 [Damage](!
#sworddamage)
Thanks, but I had to move the damage macro from the 'Ratman' abilities to the macros section for it to work, i'd prefer to have character specific macros tied to the character instead of having a long list of unsorted macros. How can I do this? Thanks for the help

Keep them as abilities. The syntax is simpler, requiring no html substitutions. If all abilities are on the same character, use: /me The Rat Man swings their sword! /r 1d20+4 [Damage](~sworddamage) If your sworddamage is used by multiple characters (not sure how it could be, since bonuses are usually dependent on character, but you didn't say what system you were using), keep all of those damage macros as abilities on a separate sheet, named "WeaponDamage" for example: /me The Rat Man swings their sword! /r 1d20+4 [Damage](~WeaponDamage|sworddamage) It might be worthwhile to review the following two Stupid Roll20 tricks: Chat Menu Macro Character Sheet

Ah yes, sorry... my bad. I didn't notice the huge 'ABILITIES' clue at the top of your screen shot lol... Keith has you covered ;)
Thank you two so much, works great now; I still have a lot to learn
