The next morning, Governor Nighthill calls the party together and introduces them to some of the members of Chelnadatilar's intelligence corps. These spies have discovered that the Cult is transporting a magical weapon of great power to the enemy blue dragon prince Skalnaedyr. It is well guarded by a strong force, so they need the adventurers to stop them! The spies lead the party to a forest, pointing out an area where they have learned the Cult forces will be traveling later in the day. Choosing to ambush the enemy, they prepare by concealing themselves and summoning allies. The ranger calls a group of giant owls to watch the area, and the bard makes a magical hut to protect the party. Preparations made, they watch and wait. An hour or so passes, then two of the giant owls fly up and report to Tammy - the Cult has been spotted! The tiny cleric halfing jumps onto an owl's back and flies ahead, but the cultists are not alone - several demons accompany them and make quick work of the nearby owls, dumping Noram into a tree. Another owl is able to rescue her, but the demons cast a noxious cloud that settles over her. Several other clouds soon follow as more demons appear. Lightning from Brin, arrows from Twinkle Tammy, fallen branches animated by Mella, and an insect cloud summoned by Noram take down several cultists and scatter the demons. They are hard-pressed, though, to avoid the rolling black poison clouds while also pursuing their enemies. Brin nearly falls, but at the last moment assumes a gaseous form and escapes near-certain death at the hands of the demons. Noram, Tammy, and Mella regrouped and began to make progress against the largest of the demons... ...but then the last remaining cultist disappears into a cloud of darkness and flies away into the forest, moving tree to tree and outdistancing any pursuit. Seeing that their charge had escaped, the demons retreat in pillars of fire to their home, the Infernal Plane. As they leave, the ranger hears them talking of having accomplished their mission. The party is disappointed that they were unable to stop the weapon delivery, but survival is a victory in itself. They return to Greenest, vowing that the next task set to them by Governor Nighthill will be accomplished.
