Using Roll20 in place of grid mat for at-home group.

So I'm hosting a campaign at my house and I hate using my grid mat. So much washing and drawing ya know? Instead I thought I'd use Roll20 and hook my computer to my tv. No drawing maps and wasting game time or any of that. I've experimented with taking initiative for players/monsters and all that, but I was wondering if anyone else has tried this and has any tips for me moving forward.

I haven't done it yet but i probably will next weekend. The only thing that came to my head is i'll need a second pc (preferably a notebook) for the players to use. Otherwise you'd have to extend your desktop onto, say, the tv and use another browser logged in as a player so they don't see anything they're not supposed to, and even then you'd have to do all the moving of the tokens and rolling and it could get pretty tedious or boring for the players i'm guessing. (who doesn't want to roll the dice? :P ~ Unless they used physical dice for that part) In any case, having everything already prepared on roll20 saves a lot of time and we can use it to play, instead of preparing things mid-game like drawing the maps. I'll see how it goes. EDIT~ For initiative i recommend using this macro below: /emas @{selected|token_name} rolls a [[1d20+@{selected|init}&{tracker}]] for initiative! You need to select each token to use it, but it will put the results straight into the turn tracker instead of selecting each one to add a turn, rolling for initiative, and manually editing the numbers. That one uses an attribute called init which you'd have to add to every monster/pc for it to work and contains all its initiative modifiers. For combat i use something like this: /emas @{selected|token_name} rolls a [[1d20+5]] to hit with his Greatclub for [[2d8+3]] points of damage. You can also use attributes like @{selected|STRMod} instead of a modifier straight into the formula, so you can add to every sheet as well. For the three bars on the tokens i normally use HP and AC. The third is due to a homebrew rule so i won't add it. but you can take your pick on something you use often (like speed, or to keep track on an ability that needs to recharge?). Also make sure to select "Use as token action" on the ability macros you add, so they'll show up on top of the screen when you select them. Hope that helps. Nick.
I have 3 players that share my secondary account, Gaming Group, while I GM from my tablet on my GM account, and they use my 50" inch plasma.
