After returning to Greenest, the adventurers are met with troubling news. The enemy dragon princes, Skalnaedyr and Domborcojh, have taken the field in their dragon forms, violating the most fundamental pact of the dragon prince council of Murghôm. Chelnadatilar and Astanalan have done the same and have thus far held the line, but it is only a matter of time before fallout from their battle destroys the land and everyone living in it. This battle must be stopped, and soon! If Chelnadatilar and Astanalan could focus on Skalnaedyr, they could subdue him or drive him away, but for that to happen Domborcojh would need to be dealt with. The most effective way to pull a dragon away from a battle is simple: steal from his hoard. Governor Nighthill calls Jardeth to the council: When I was held prisoner, I saw Domborcojh take many rich items taken deeper into the cave system. I remember he was particularly taken with a magical beacon which could be lit to shine a great light in the sky, and a massive jewel. He boasted of how together they created the most beautiful rainbow. Most of his hoard is stored elsewhere, but those items I saw placed in a chest and given to a water elemental, who disappeared into the pool near my cage. The adventurers agree to retrieve these treasures and use them to distract Domborcojh, at no little risk to themselves. Jardeth is able to provide one potion of waterbreathing for underground diving. Mounting horses provided by Governor Nighthill, they speed across the land to the cave entrance. Gnomes still guard the entrance, but eloquent words from Tammy and intimidation from Mella convince them to let the party through. The gnomes come along to keep an eye on them, but do not interfere as they make their way through the cave. Soon they are once again by the cage where Jardeth was once a prisoner. Mella summons a familiar in frog form to explore the water, finding two giant octopuses and a chamber accessible only by going underwater. But as soon as the frog enters the chamber, something damages it and it dies! The adventurers proceed with caution, luring the octopuses to the edge of the water via the bard's light spell, where the sorceress and ranger defeat them. Then Mella uses the waterbreathing potion and goes near the far chamber, using her unseen servant to gather the treasures from a well along the back wall. Two water elementals rise up, alerted by the movement of the treasures! They block the servant's exit, so Brin swims across and casts cold spells to freeze them. She takes some psionic damage from the guardian spell in the chamber, but is able to slow the elementals enough for Mella to retrieve the treasures. The party beats a hasty retreat, with Tammy convincing the guardian gnomes that they've received direct mental commands from Domborcojh himself. Having obtained the treasures, the party exits the cave and moves up into the rocky ground above it. Mella casts her tiny hut spell for protection, the cleric summons a holy guardian, and the ranger summons giant owls and sets them to watch the area. Noram sets up the beacon just outside the hut, and it slowly comes to life, shining a light into the heavens, refracted through the gem into a rainbow of colors. Within minutes, a sapphire blur speeds through the sky from the northeast! The owls launch themselves at the dragon, but his sonic breath weapon demolishes them all. The delay is significant, though, as it gives time for Noram to grab the beacon and Mella to toss her open eversmoking bottle onto the ground. They duck back into the hut as a thick fog surrounds the area. Domborcojh lands where the beacon had been, and attacks the hut, but it holds under the assault. The dragon moves away, disappearing into the fog. Unable to see him, the party huddles in the hut, waiting. A few seconds later, a huge form bursts up from underground! Domborcojh had tunneled under the hut, breaking the spell as he entered the area, and knocking down the cleric and sorceress for good measure. The adventurers scatter, moving off into the fog. Unfortunately the cleric is slow and takes several vicious claw swipes in the process, and Domborcojh is able to use his breath weapon against everyone but the bard. But then Mella casts a spell of fear blindly into the fog, catching the dragon in its effect! He flees out of sight, but is soon able to overcome the spell and returns, furiously bursting through the fog. He emerges near the cleric and knocks her unconscious with another swipe of his claw. The cleric's wounds prove fatal as Domborcojh chases after the others. The rest of the party has had time to scatter, though, and the dragon is unable to chase them all down. Moments later, having subdued Skalnaedyr, Chelnadatilar and Astanalan arrive on the scene! The gold and emerald dragons descend on Domborcojh, inflicting wounds until the sapphire dragon is forced to flee. The gold dragon polymorphs into the human form of Chelnadatilar, expresses great respect for the bravery of the entire party in facing Domborcojh, and heals their wounds...even raising the cleric from the dead! Chelnadatilar promises that this victory will allow them to consolidate their hold over all of Murghôm. He decrees that the cult will find no safe refuge now in his lands. Additionally, he will use his influence with other good dragons to support any action that the Council of Waterdeep chooses to bring against the cult elsewhere. He brings everyone back to town, to rest and recover. The party will return to Waterdeep in the morning.
