The next morning, Governor Nighthill calls the party together and introduces them to some of the members of Chelnadatilar's intelligence corps. These spies have discovered that the Cult is transporting a magical weapon of great power to the enemy blue dragon prince Skalnaedyr. It is well guarded by a strong force, deep in enemy territory. A small, stealthy intrusion is the only alternative! The spies lead the party past enemy patrols to a forest, pointing out an area where they have learned the Cult forces will be traveling later in the day. Choosing to ambush the enemy, they prepare by concealing themselves. Malkior uses his hawk familiar to scout the area, soon spotting the group of cultists traveling in their direction. There are three cultists, accompanied by two devils! Quickly the wizard reports this intelligence to the rest of the party, and they use their poison resistance goblets to fortify against the devils. The adventurers allow the cult group to approach, then attack as they move into the open. Malkior lets loose a fireball, Ulrik casts a barrier of sharp blades, and Lariat moves to attack the lead devil. Two of the weaker cultists are killed almost immediately, but the third escapes and flies away. But before they can pursue him, the devils remain to be dealt with. The smaller devil casts a noxious fog cloud, surrounding Lariat and blocking her sight. But Malkior can still see the larger devil, and unleashes a lightning bolt that leaps to hit both enemies! Then Ulrik moves close to the larger devil and commands it to grovel, causing it to cower and continue to take damage from the blade wall. Lariat escapes the fog cloud and kills the smaller devil, and the larger one succumbs shortly thereafter. Malkior quickly hops on his broom, and accompanied by his hawk familiar, heads off in pursuit of the final cultist. He is unable to spot his quarry at first, but just as he is about to give up, he spots the cultist's head bobbing among the trees as he flees. Using all his skill with the magical broom, the wizard speeds toward the cultist and summons a mighty magical hand to stop him! The cultist is quickly defeated, and Malkior returns victorious. The spies search the bodies of the cultists and find the magical weapon - which looks like a mere rock to the adventurers, but the spies assure them that in the hands of a dragon it is a deadly danger. They return to Greenest, where Governor Nighthill locks up the stone and congratulates the party. He encourages them to take a night's rest, then he will have another task for them in the morning.
