Magic missile in 5e sheet, cannot place multiple nor in level 2...

Hopefully this is the right place to post this, I've searched extensively and can't find the answer to this. I'm setting up a character sheet for a player, we are moving online from in person. He has four level one slots, and two level two slots available for spellcasting. In our in-person game, he had magic missile taking up three of those slots, two of them for level one and one of them in level two. Additionally, he has the other two level one slots reserved for shield. It seems I am unable to place multiple instances of magic missile, or Shield into the 5e character sheet from the compendium. even if I wanted to only place magic missile into the level 2 slots, it automatically puts them in level 1. I'm probably missing something here, or going about it the wrong way period but I'm starting to go a little batty trying to figure it out. Thanks in advance.

You don't need to reserve slots for each spell in 5e, which is why the sheet won't do this. You know or prepare a certain number of spells (this is explained in the PHB, each class is different) and you have a certain number of slots to use per day. You can use the slots however you like, divided amongst your spells known whichever way you wish. If Magic Missile is on your list, and you have a level 2 slot available, you can upcast it. You don't need to 'reserve' a level 2 slot in advance. As such there's no absolutely reason to have the same spell on the sheet more than once, so it doesn't allow you to - having excessive spells on characters can cause extra lag in the game. One of the sheets for the versions that support the spell system you're describing may be a better way to go, if that's how you want to play... maybe one of the PF sheets? not sure, but it isn't how 5e works, so it isn't how the sheet works. edit - you could edit the Spell's name, level etc. to allow you to get multiples on the sheet.... then delete them as you cast them. But it'll be extremely clunky. It never occurred to me that someone would want to use the 5e sheet this way, I've honestly never heard anyone lamenting the old system of preparing quantities of spells in advance :)
Thanks for the reply Oosh, appreciate it! We are admittedly newer players, so we're all learning this together - it looks like we'll have to review the rules. Thanks for pointing us in the right directection! A quick google search of what we thought we understood already shows that what you said is correct. Thank you.
