Not RPG... gaming... Starfleet Battles

Any Trekies out there? Im looking for a few players who might interested in playing something other than RPG. A very fun game called Starfleet battles. No need to be a veteran or even know how to play because I’ll teach! I’ve also created some beautiful looking SSDs, maps, and ship counters.  Roll20 is a fantastic platform that can be utilized for far more than just RPG.With just a bit of an imagination you can create fantastic looking board games!  If this sounds interesting drop me a line I’ll show you what I did. It doesn’t hurt to look Dan DaMan
This is an example of some of the SSDs I’ve created
Man, I haven't played since Captains Edition...
i have not played since task force had the little zippy bag of starfleet battles. Great game too. Between Advanced Squad Leader and RPG's I am full up sadly.
This prompted me to open my Designer's Edition for the first time in 35ish years. Ah, the memories. Argument, move, argument, move, argument. Good luck!
you should see may Squad Leader Stuff too!  Roll 20 is a great platform for War Games
someone mentioned  ASL... So This is also my work on Squad Leader... Oh... I also did a lot with Panzer Leader too.
Wow that looks fantastic. ASL has VASL or fully Virtual ASL plateform. Its kinda clunky but works. Dan DaMan said:
Oh i know.  Roll20 is the S—t.  I love this platform. Now if i can just find someone to play with!  I started toying with the longest day.  Thats a true Monster game in every aspect.
I give tours!!!! Step right up.  Send me a PM and ill show you my work.
You should see how I did the squad / half squad reductions. I used multi sided tokens/counters. They all reduce down with broken sides on every unit.   But right now im lookin for people who want to boldly go.
On one hand, I am looking for a new game to fill a slot in my stream schedule... on the other hand, it's been about 30 years since I've played SFB. I've in fact talked about Starfire more recently than SFB. >.>
Well... the way i see it... you need to send me a Private message and ill give you my pitch and show you around. My school of thought is that good game should play well. A great game should play well and look fantastic.  I strive to make the game is look as awesome as I can (you should see my plasma torpedoes)  as well as smooth over some of the rougher playing aspects (I.E. the impulse chart.).  And roll 20 makes this easy for me to do both of these things brilliantly.

I never played this. Is this similar to Warhammer 40k? I played that very long ago. couldn't really get into that due to cost.

Well cost is definitely not a factor here.  By examining the top three pictures you should be able to extrapolate a lot of what the game is like. Its a Star Trek ship on chip combat game. The bottom pictures of a World War II battlefield in the village is independent and not related to the game Starfleet Battles. It was just a side discussion about a game called squad leader.  Starfleet battles is the game I would be interested in teaching people how to play
This Pic should get us back on topic
I'm not sure if it goes without saying... that the popcorn, soda and chips are only here to complete the illusion of a virtual tabletop. Ambience!
I used to love me some SFB but that SSD looks like FC
ok... no more pics. I'm just trying to showcase just how easy it is to pull off any good war game... Starfleet Battles plays better on Roll20 then it did on the pool table down in my basement what back in the 1980-90s
No the SSDs are 100% SFB... i just improved the appearance some.
You should see how i worked out the rough edges of the Impulse chart... its way cool!

Ok here is what i did... so I created a second map just for the impulse chart. Then I made transparent tokens. 2 red and 2 blue. these are vertical ones to hi-light speeds. Then a horizontal yellow one for impulse. Now here is the key to making it very easy to use...  I set the grid so as to coincide with the size of the number cells. So once I select the yellow one I just tap on the down arrow to advance in down. What's more, by using the 2 monitor setting in windows and a HDMI Cable on my 60 inch TV. Wella! Laptop for the Impulse chart and the TV and a mouse for game Map. :)

One thing to say to those who never played before... only 1 person needs to run the impulse chart. Kind of like the GM but with only 2 players then one of them... normally ME, will have to play and run the chart as well.  Thus the importance in making it very easy to deal with. If there is a dedicated GM then its  not an issue. Dont get me started on handouts. I have all the charts and many more that should have been available to all players long ago. These make it easy to quickly find important notations and Rule reference if more detailed understanding is required.  I'm setting up to teach, so don't let the lack of experience get in the way. It's a Friggen Starfleet Battles Academy up in here! Dan DaMan
I used to play years ago.  I grew into the smaller-scale (PF) engagements.  Curious to see how this was implemented in R20 as opposed to TTS.
This is something that I've always fancied playing but never of the chance due to house moves, people moving away etc. I am UK based but limited to Sundays at the moment, if that's good for you then I'll give it a go :)
1984?
That's better.  Is it me, or does this Coke taste funny?
Just dropping a line to express how impressed I am with your SFB and ASL projects. They look great! If you are looking for another project I was thinking Battletech would be cool too.
Wow! Great minds think alike!   I was thinking about that myself. 😬

Before taking on any more projects I would prefer to chase this here fox to ground. Here’s a  list of my future projects to fritter away my time.:       The longest day      Panzer Leader (I already fully implemented this but had to remove it due to storage space. This was before I became a paying customer of Roll20)      BattleTech.       Wooden ships and Iron Man  DnD or D20 type RPGs will aways be hanging around somewhere in the wings of my mind. I have plenty of digitize Materials for those.  You known, like charts tables maps and such are all ready to go for that.  The truly hard part of any of these games is to find a handful of people one would enjoy hanging out and talking smack with. Just 3-4 people that would enjoy these games.  Dan

This Sunday, I had a great time playing with and teaching someone new to SFB. He was easy to instruct and a fast learner. But what I discovered about roll20 or more precisely, how better to “utilize” Roll20 was the big news for me. As I mentioned above, handling a few jobs at 1 time in an efficient manner is paramount for any game. With RPGs this is not as pronounced, but a war game such as SFB it’s critical. I tried to accomplish this in a few different ways. First: I tried multi monitors by using my TV. This was an improvement. Second: I used 2 laptops (this was how I played Sunday). This was even better, but living-room sprawl was a downer. Then it dawned on me! An epiphany zapped me to attention and was quicky followed by a feeling of foolishness.  This definitely falls into the category of a “No Shit Sherlock” kinda moment. Just 1 laptop but multi logins. I know, I know… perhaps I’m not as smart I as think I am. Ok, so I log in at the Battle map, then log in again (new window) at the Impulse Chart and log in again zoomed in tight on the SSD and Damage Allocation Chart. THIS WORKS GREAT! Fast, efficient and super effective! What I like best about this is: If I select a tool in 1 window, it stays selected even if I select different tools in different windows. I know this sounds like I just learn how to tie my shoes and begin preaching the importance of shoelaces, but wow, Roll20 is geared up for RPGs. War games are a horse of a different color. Say what you will but, this is going to be a game changer…. Hehehe Literally! If this can help anyone else out there, thinking about forcing a square peg into a round hole, perhaps this will provide the chisel. Dan
