DM Setting Up New Roleplay Focused Homebrew Campaign [DND5E][DISCORD](beginners welcome)

Edited 1609524571
Hello! I'm a long time DM who is looking to start a new long-term campaign and am looking for 6 players. My last 3+ year old party that survived the transition from in person to Roll20, recently fell apart as we had people graduate, move to different countries, and/or start working 60 to 80 hour workweek jobs. I am looking to start up a new long-term campaign that plays either once or twice a week.  The time slot will be Friday at 7pm-10:30/11pm. Next week, Friday the 8th will be the character creation and meet the party session. In this session I will introduce the world and start allowing to make adjustments to it based on player agency.  My style of DMing is one that focuses on storytelling and puts a heavier emphasis on roleplaying rather than combat, with the pacing favoring fewer but harder fights (combat that will actually be challenging but tailored to the capability of the party). With that in mind, there will be an expectation that players will lean into that roleplay aspect and spend more time developing the idea of their character than the mechanics of it. In this, the campaign will welcome beginners and I will work with you to help you learn the system, but it might not be the most beginner friendly experience if roleplay is not something you are comfortable with at least experimenting in. The style of this campaign will focus on intrigue, puzzling, and an open world narrative that explores the idea of causation and consequence. The world, which is entirely home brewed (including some changes to monsters and environmental effects + I am willing to homebrew characters as well), will evolve in the background as you play the game through dice rolls that I do behind the scenes in which the player actions will manipulate to help influence what groups and factions rise and fall with the tides of fate. In that endeavor, I enjoy when my players work to situate themselves within the world and am more than willing, and truly enjoy, working the story to fit the ideas of the characters. My one caveat in this is that in a joint storytelling experience, the balance is gained through sharing the time at the 'table' with the other players that you play with. I don't mind when players play center stage or showboating characters, but my preference is that the trait be exclusively that of the character and not the player behind the character. The campaign will be 18+ and explore mature and visceral themes, such as slavery, tyranny, survival, villainy , racism, and societal degredation (to name a few) that allow us to explore philosophical concepts to a greater degree. To facilitate this, we will be using black cards (if any situations arise that a player is uncomfortable with occurring they can use this and we will pivot to change course away from the situation), grey cards (if a situation is one that a player wants to move past but is comfortable with occurring we will fade to black and not narrate the situation any further (all sexual context is fade to black). Important Notes: Absolutely No Sexual Assault. Races will be placed in a social hierarchy (you can work to change that hierarchy if you so choose). LGBTQ+ Friendly campaign (sexual preferences will not be a part of the social hierarchy). Evil is the product of a persons heart not their race, although NPCs may perceive other races as evil due to past trauma, etc. Rules Lawyering is undesirable, the rules act as a framework more than a rigid structure.  If you are interest in applying, please feel free to comment, send me a DM (not sure if my roll20 account can receive DMs at the moment), or message me on Discord at Soundtribe#8124 What is your name and what are your pronouns? How old are you? What is your experience with pen and paper RPGs (if any)? What type of stories do you enjoy? Is there a particular character you've been wanting to play? If so, tell me about the character. If you would prefer to wait to see the world and or party before constructing your character, tell me about your favorite character .  What do you enjoy the most about DnD? Can you describe your DnD playstyle?  Can you consistently make the weekly time slot of Friday at 7PM EST? Would you be available to play twice in a week?
What is your name and what are your pronouns? Phoenix (He/Him/His) How old are you? 25 What is your experience with pen and paper RPGs (if any)? My experience is primarily with 5e and on R20. Though I've played on and off through the years, my bulk of playtime has been within the past year on R20. If you need help with macros or site specific stuff, I have some knowledge. What type of stories do you enjoy? Typically, I prefer character focused stories. There's nothing like a multidimensional character growing over the course of a story. Is there a particular character you've been wanting to play? If so, tell me about the character. If you would prefer to wait to see the world and or party before constructing your character, tell me about your favorite character . I've been wanting to play a goliath historian looking into his giant heritage. I've thought of him as a bard-fighter. He finds joy in quite and seclusion, but isn't afraid to go out and get hands dirty. That being said, there are a lot of characters I'd love to play not just this one. What do you enjoy the most about DnD? I find D&D is at it's best when the DM has worked on filling out an immersive world and the players respond to that by investing themselves in the game, creating characters that are easy to empathize with and get wrapped up in. Conversely, when there is low commitment, when players "troll" or the DM just starts throwing things at the players, that's when the game is at it's worst. Can you describe your DnD playstyle? Improving. I try to immerse myself in the world the best I can and stay in-character. However, be prepared for bad accents -_- I've also been working on trying to improve my capacity to take what other players put down and engage with it. Another thing I've been working on is being less "quasi-meta-gamey." For example, a beginning adventurer wouldn't just rush to get the "optimal" armor. PCs that focus on that stuff tend to be boring. Can you consistently make the weekly time slot of Friday at 7PM EST? Yes Would you be available to play twice in a week? Possibly, depends on the time
What is your name and what are your pronouns?    Nick, He/Him/His How old are you?   36 What is your experience with pen and paper RPGs (if any)?   6 years of 5e What type of stories do you enjoy?    This is a loaded question because a good story transcends genre, and its difficult for me to pinpoint what things I think make for a good story.  Some examples of my varied story interests include Shawshank Redemption, Breakin Bad/Better Call Saul, Freaks and Geeks, Avatar the Last Airbender, Craig of the Creek, Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny, Chappi, District 9, The Ring, etc. Is there a particular character you've been wanting to play? If so, tell me about the character. If you would prefer to wait to see the world and or party before constructing your character, tell me about your favorite character . ----  I would love to talk more about the world to see how I can design something that fits, but one of my favorite characters was a litigious druid who used society's laws against them to acquire large swathes of land for protection.  With some illusionary magic of illusory script, the gift of gab, and an understanding of city and regional laws, this character worked tirelessly to acquire land for protection rights so that it couldn't be harvested.  He wasn't above shady business deals, or shaking someone down by showing up with 9 wolves at their door to get what he wanted.  But he was incredibly fun to play, played almost like a smuggler who promised to get people rare and exotic animal goods in exchange for favors, etc.  Super fun way to play a druid, while still falling into the route of protecting nature.  Society disgusted him, so he used its own greed to ensure they couldn't bring more harm to the wilderness. What do you enjoy the most about DnD?   The storytelling --- combat is also fun, when it serves the storytelling, but strong story and character work make the game for me.  If I just wanted to combat, I would play video games. Can you describe your DnD playstyle?    Outside the box, improvisational, and full immersion --- I try to act my character out, embody them to try and make them feel more believable and realistic --- that said, I always look for a way around combat (unless playing a combat oriented character) and try to approach things with a unique perspective. Can you consistently make the weekly time slot of Friday at 7PM EST?   I am available Fridays at this time. Would you be available to play twice in a week?   I am unavailable to play twice in a week.

If you would prefer to wait to see the world and or party before constructing your character, tell me about your favorite character . I prefer to fill depending on world and party, but my favorite character was my Orc Glory Paladin, Ugghra Lightgrip What do you enjoy the most about DnD? Interactions with players and DM situations Can you describe your DnD playstyle? Fill a need Can you consistently make the weekly time slot of Friday at 7PM EST? yes Would you be available to play twice in a week? depends on the day and time Discord: Krager#1576
What is your name and what are your pronouns? Joseph He/Him How old are you? 21 What is your experience with pen and paper RPGs (if any)? I've been playing DnD for a little while but not rp heavy but i would like to join one.      What type of stories do you enjoy? One that has alot of twists and turns  Is there a particular character you've been wanting to play? If so, tell me about the character. If you would prefer to wait to see the world and or party before constructing your character, tell me about your favorite character. My favorite character is my barbarian because i went into fights and messed some people up.  What do you enjoy the most about DnD? The characters, the story, trying to get more into rp and the combat and exploration.  Can you describe your DnD playstyle? I mostly do combat and let my other part members do the more critical thinking but something i would love to change  Can you consistently make the weekly time slot of Friday at 7PM EST? Yes Would you be available to play twice in a week? Maybe based on the time and day.  My discord: jjevyak#1100
What is your name and what are your pronouns? Wendy, they/them or she/her.  How old are you? 28 What is your experience with pen and paper RPGs (if any)? 5 years of D&D 5e in both home-brew and official campaigns, and I have DM’ed once. I was in one nearly 4 year long homebrew campaign until covid lockdowns happened, and I always stick with a game long term and there are very few circumstances that would cause me to quit. I’ve played 3.5e, Pathfinder 1e, and a few other TTRPG systems on a handful of occasions as well. What type of stories do you enjoy? In general I’ve always been inspired and influenced by fantasy, mythology, and both history and historical fiction. Give me a good adventure and I’m probably all for it! In RPGs I love stories that are both character driven and that challenge the characters and in turn drive their personal story development. I love a world where the characters are actually rooted in it and affect the world around them as much as it affects them. Is there a particular character you've been wanting to play? If so, tell me about the character.  If you would prefer to wait to see the world and or party before constructing your character, tell me about your favorite character. I have a few characters waiting in the wings for the perfect campaign to drop them in. They have extensive/in depth backstories and I would love to work with a DM to make them really feel part of the world. Odds are at least one I already have will fit, but I am just as willing to create someone brand new. I would absolutely be willing to go into more detail about the existing ones privately and/or wait to know the world before making a choice. My current favorite that I have played was a Tiefling Wizard, who was not at all an adventurer, simply a shopkeeper at an Arcane shop, and she was swept up into the Out of the Abyss campaign and thrown entirely out of her element, and went 4 levels without a spellbook after losing it in the very beginning. What do you enjoy the most about DnD? I really enjoy the collaborative storytelling and I get very invested in the world and other characters in it. Can you describe your DnD playstyle? I can be a bit quiet at first to be honest, but even then I’m always paying attention to detail. Once I warm up to the group I definitely speak up more. I play my characters true to themselves, rather than taking the most strategic route. If the particular character wouldn’t make the best decision in a situation, I would much rather play out the consequences than play out of character. To me, playing flaws and the consequences of them is just as much a part of the game/story and makes a character more real. Just going off of what you say about how you DM, I think I would mesh very well with this. Can you consistently make the weekly time slot of Friday at 7PM EST? Yes. Would you be available to play twice in a week? Most likely, yes
Hello! At this time we have filled all of the slots of the party. That being said, if you are still interested apply below. Short notice things can come up and cause players to have to drop out sometimes and I want the start of the campaign to have a strong cast of steady players, so that the campaign can truly grow into itself.
What is your name and what are your pronouns? Rick (he/him) How old are you? 29 What is your experience with pen and paper RPGs (if any)? I've been playing D&D 5e since 2016 and recently picked up Pathfinder 2e   What type of stories do you enjoy? I think any story can be compelling, but I tend to enjoy the standard "start from nothing and rise to the top" situation Is there a particular character you've been wanting to play? If so, tell me about the character. If you would prefer to wait to see the world and or party before constructing your character, tell me about your favorite character. I typically like to hear about the setting and meet the group before making a character, and will generally make my character last so that nobody's toes get stepped on and we can avoid doubling up What do you enjoy the most about DnD? The shared story telling and the escapism Can you describe your DnD playstyle? Typically I like to focus on the roleplay, but I do enjoy a stressful combat. I will also make character choices that actively work against me and fully encourage the DM to take advantage of that sometimes (for example: made a character made entirely around ice magic being pitted up against something immune to ice damage) Can you consistently make the weekly time slot of Friday at 7PM EST? Yes, I have fridays off and that is a perfect time for me Would you be available to play twice in a week? With the exception of Sunday, yes as long as it is after 8/9 pm EST
Dang, I'm sorry I didn't see this a few days ago. What is your name and what are your pronouns? Mike, he/him How old are you? Worldbuilding/immersive, fantasy, scifi, etc Is there a particular character you've been wanting to play? If so, tell me about the character. If you would prefer to wait to see the world and or party before constructing your character, tell me about your favorite character . I'm usually a 'wait to see what the party needs' type of person and have played most major classes at least once. My favorite literary character is probably Paksenarrion, created by Elizabeth Moon. What do you enjoy the most about DnD? Collaborative storytelling, RP, strategy Can you describe your DnD playstyle? See above. :) Can you consistently make the weekly time slot of Friday at 7PM EST? I could. Would you be available to play twice in a week? I might, depending on the day/time/frequency
