Character and Custom NPC tokens blank when added to maps

I did a quick search and did not find info on this so I apologize if it was already answered. I am not sure what I did or missed while making NC's and characters but I am finding myself with the following problem. I created all of my player's characters, linked them to tokens, and provided them access once they logged into my game with their accounts. yet when I drag and drop their characters to the various game maps the tokens always end up blank. I have re-link to tokens back to the character sheet and choose what stats to display every time. I would have thought this was normal except I created custom NPC monsters and for them it doesn't happen. I drag them to the map and it displays their names, hp, ac, etc. To make this more frustrating is that this only works form some of NPC monsters as well. I have other NPC's that do the same thing as the characters. I drag them out and I have to relink them. So I sat there with the two NPC character sheets opened side by side (one that works and another that doesn't) and for the life of me I don't see what I did different or missed settings wise. Can anyone advise?

Make sure you are doing all these steps in the correct order: https://wiki.roll20.net/Linking_Tokens_to_Journals When you set the default token to the sheet, it is a snapshot of all settings at the time you set the default. If you do that first, and then all the other steps after, you have set a basically blank token as default.

And just to emphasize what Kraynic said: the important thing to do is make sure that you save the token as the character sheet's Default Token as the very last step. And in the future if you update the token, you have to update the Default Token for the character sheet again. This may seem unintuitive, but the reason is that you might have a standard Goblin token, but decide that you want a specific Goblin token to be the boss in a room, so you would pull out the standard token and increase the HP or AC or something, but in that case you don't want the default token updated, right? So that's the tradeoff -- you have to manually update the default token, so that every change to any goblin token doesn't inadvertently update it when you don't want it to.

And just to add to the conversation, if you prefer videos for learning, here is one I made that walks through and explains the process: Roll20TnT Linking Tokens and Journals
UGH! Thanks Guys. That was what I did wrong, added the tokens to those characters prior to changing all of the settings. I knew it was just an order of operations thing but for the life of me couldn't recall what I did wrong. Thanks again.
