Lost Mine of Phandelver

Am I reading the description here on Roll20 correctly?   This module would be a perfect beginner player / DM adventure, and it DOES NOT require any of the source books?  This is an all encompassing module to get you playing?  Players can build their own characters, DM will have access to all monsters within the module to run this game as a standalone?   Basically, I'm looking for something low cost to sample before investing too much into an online platform.  Thoughts?

I don't play 5E, so I can't tell you the relative value of different things.&nbsp; I can say that there is a free module that is specifically for people to try out without having to purchase anything.&nbsp; <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/module/40/the-masters-vault" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/module/40/the-masters-vault</a>
Thank you!&nbsp; This is also very helpful... and I might check that one out first.&nbsp; Specifically on Lost Mines... Roll20 advertises:&nbsp; " Roll20 Enhancements: A lightly modified version of the D&amp;D Starter Set, containing everything you need to run the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure on Roll20." To me, this means I don't need to purchase any source books... everything I need is contained within the module.&nbsp; Agreed?

You shouldn't need to purchase any of the books to run any module.&nbsp; Some modules (depending on what was supplied to Roll20) might not have token art, though I expect that is mostly 3rd party modules (to avoid any copyright issues).&nbsp; If you end up wanting to do something outside the SRD, or content specific to that module, you would just need to add it by hand.&nbsp; Not owning the other content on Roll20 doesn't keep you from building what you want, though it may take a little bit of learning about the ins and outs of how the settings on the character sheet work to build some things.
Indeed, Lost mines has a subset of dnd 5e rules which expand the available&nbsp; SRDs a bit. More or less a sandobox adventure for characters up to 5th level I think which introduces&nbsp; players and DM to DnD 5e with lot of explanations for the role as DM.&nbsp; There is another one, called Essentials Kit. IMO this one is also for 5e new starter but assumes that players and DM alike have already some experiences with roleplaying games based on d20 systems. the&nbsp; <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/bundle/4386/essentials-kit-deluxe-edition" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/bundle/4386/essentials-kit-deluxe-edition</a> &nbsp;includes adventures up to 12th character level Both are located in the same region of the Forgotten Realms.

Hi Norseman, You will not need anything to run the module that is not in the print book. You will have all monsters, maps, token art and so forth. What you will not get is anything specific to the Players Handbook. So yes, you can build player characters, but if you do not have the PHB, you will be limited to the options available in the SRD released by Wizards of the Coast: One sub race option for each race, one sub class option for each class, one background, one feat, etc. If you have access to the material in print there is absolutely nothing preventing you from adding any of that stuff manually, of course. A Roll20 module of WotC material contains every print and text resource available in the print edition of the module. Any monster only referenced by the print edition will still use Monster Manual art. Any monster you decide to add for yourself will be limited to what you have purchased or are willing to create manually. It can be a little confusing if you are new to the game, so please ask more questions if any of that was unclear.
