Can't make a custom character?

When I try to make a custom character it said that I need a subscription of $100/year. Does this mean I can't be creative if I don't pay?

Creating a custom character sheet requires a pro subscription. So, if you want a character sheet for "Wonderful World of Underwater Basketweaving the RPG" (or whatever), then you would need to get a pro subscription and write a sheet for it if a character sheet doesn't already exist on Roll20 for that game. If you are playing a game that already has a sheet here, then you can just fill out a character sheet with whatever you want, no different than being able to fill out a paper character sheet with whatever you want on it.

So I don't have to pay to create a character? If so then how do I create a character for an upcoming campaign?

Creating custom Character sheet templates is a Pro-subscriber feature, which is ~$9/month, or $100/year. https://wiki.roll20.net/Pro Depending on what you're thinking about, you might not even need that. Custom Character Sheets are if the existing hundreds of templates in the dropdown isn't something that fits the game you intend to play, or if you want to edit the code of a sheet slightly. Most probably, you can use one of the existing templates, and adjust some setting and it's fine for what you intended to play. What RPG system are you playing, and was the available char sheets for the system not something that works for you? EDIT: If so then how do I create a character for an upcoming campaign? https://wiki.roll20.net/Add_character_sheet

Character sheets don't exist outside of a game. If the person running the game isn't going to have you create the character inside their game, then you create your own game using the exact character sheet that will be used in the game you will be playing. Once the game is created and launched, there will be a big "Add" button in the journal where you can add a character. That will create a character sheet for you to edit. Then, assuming vault access is turned on in the game you will be playing, you can use the Character Vault (under the "Tools" header above) to import the character you just made in your game, and export it to the game you will be playing in. A lot of DMs will prefer you create your character inside their game though, because they may have some guidelines on character creation for that particular game. So be sure your DM will be allowing you to bring characters from outside their game before creating one on your own.

Great advice generally above but don't forget that you can create any number of games with no subscription and create any number of characters in those games. So if a DM insists on creation in game instead there is nothing to stop you using a pre-generated character as a template to port over to the game with changes made based on the DMs rules. You can even have both games open in separate tabs and simply copy/paste all your hard work across :D
