start when the party leaves the structure that Mormesk the wraith inhabits, in
order to do his bidding, of ridding of a creature known as a spectator, that is
up a short flight of stairs , inside another structure to the north. They
see that the double door is scorched and cracked as is a single door to the
north, both with partially melted hinges. Marcuria
tries to pull the doors open after picking the lock open on a roll of 20 with
the thieve’s tools. At first it would not budge until she tries again with all
her strength using a crowbar, rolling an 18 on a strength check the doors pop
open! A
“Hello!” is heard from inside. Roqar draws her short sword. Marcuria says, “Hello
to you too. Easy Roqar, let’s not make him feel threatened”. Roqar re-sheathes
the short sword. This large
workshop was badly damaged by the ancient spell battle that laid waste to the
mine. Worktables taking up two corners of the room are scorched, and the
plaster has been burned off the masonry walls. In the middle of the room, a
stone pedestal holds a small brazier in which an eerie green flame dances and
crackles. The brazier and its pedestal appear to have been untouched by the
forces that destroyed this area.
Behind the brazier of green flame floats a spherical creature
measuring roughly four feet in diameter. Four eyestalks protrude from its
central mass, two on each side. In the center of the body is a large eye that
stares at you. The Spectator says, “It has been awhile since I’ve seen the
living in this place.” Avery says, “How long have you been here”? The spectator says, “Of that I cannot say,
but I know it has been long indeed.” Avery, motions for the others to stay back and enters into the
room, mindful not to touch anything and keeping her eyes on the Spectator and
says, “I bring word from the one whom summoned you to this place.” The Spectator says, “Oh, really? What word is this?”! Avery says, “Your service is no longer
needed. You are released, and may leave now.” Avery rolls a 25 for the
persuasion check which is successful! Roqar Chuckles quietly, nodding in approval. The Spectator says, “Ah, very well then, I shall leave you be,
and I shall leave now!”, with that said he simply disappears before the party’s
eyes! Marcuria, pauses for a few moments and claps, saying, “Nice one,
Avery”. Rolo says, “Nice Job”. Roqar
claps lightly, saying “Nice work.” Marcuria says, “Well… that was simplicity
itself”. Avery giggles and waved a hand dismissively saying, “ Nothing to it”. As more of the party enters the room and looks around and upon a
table along the south wall sits a breastplate with a gold dragon emblazoned
upon it. Also a mace with it’s head shaped like a sunburst and made of
brass. Dia, recognized the symbol on the
mace as that of Lathander, the god of dawn. Marcuria senses magical emanations from the two items and the 5 ft diameter brazier with the green
flames. She believes it was used to bind
magics to the items made here. Marcuria takes both items, but does not currently plan to use
them. Rolo, uses the Mage Hand cantrip to place his dagger into the green flame
to see if it does anything, then cast Detect Magic as a ritual to see if the
dagger glows magically and it does so. Marcuria, begins to place her arms into the flames to see if it
would work on her gauntlets, but Rolo stops her and offers to use the Mage Hand
spell instead. This is done and the gauntlets also now have a magical glow.
Avery, has her rapier placed into the green flames as well and Dia and Roqar
their daggers. Each item place in the green flames was granted a +1 for 1d12
hours: Marcy’s Guantlets: 7, Rolo’s
dager: 11, Avery’s rapier: 1, Roqar’s dagger 9 hours, Juan’s Mace: 3 hours, Dia’s Dagger: 1 hour. There were tools on the table along the east wall for placing
items into the flame but some were damaged. Marcuria, decided to don the breastplate, (5 minutes), with the
gold dragon motif now. They leave this room and head out to the north door, Roqar
checking for traps rolls a 26 and no trap is to be found around the door. Once
the door is pulled opened, Roqar could not tell what the items in the room were
used for but Marcuria sees that the tools here were used for finishing items
and to also lacquer and polish them. Nothing of value is to be found in this
room. The adventurers head back to see Mormesk the wraith, who raises
from the floor as Marcuria calls out his name, saying “You have returned I see,
what of the spectator now?” Marcuria says, “He will trouble you no more Mormesk. The deed is
done”. Mormesk says, “Ah, that is good
to hear, and I thank you.” Marcuria says, “Wasn’t any trouble. Now, about your
end of things…”? Mormesk, floats over to the chest and removes 3 diamonds worth
100 g.p. and coins totaling 1,100 copper
pieces, 160 silver pieces and 50 electrum pieces. Mormesk says, “Here is your
reward for ridding of the spectator”. Marcuria says, “Yeah… I’d say that’ll do nicely”. Mormesk says, “You may look over the tomes if
you wish”. Dia and Rolo, starts skimming through the books and sees they
are all historical references, one book has a folded map of which Rolo takes.
Dia says, “Thank you Mormesk, for allowing us to look through your tomes. More
knowledge is always useful.” Roqar wants the magical brazier with the green flames but
Mormesk informs her that it cannot be removed. The party decides to head north to go down a 20 ft flight of
stairs going down from which the sounds of pounding surf can be heard echoing throughout the caverns
here. Farren not sure what is making the sounds at first. Proceeding down the
stairs they come to the following location: A narrow ledge
overlooks a large cavern that houses a surging, seething body of water. The
rhythmic booming heard throughout the mines is louder here. At regular
intervals, a fresh surge of water funnels into this chamber and slams against
the wall just below the ledge. The echo suggests that this cave might be one
arm of a much larger cavern to the northeast. While watching the water here, they see it beings to well up,
coming up closer to the ledge so they backtrack out of the cavern. Checking back a moment later they see the
water level has sunk back down. So they hug the walls, now tied together with ropes and proceed
west until they reach a worked opening. The cavern does proceed past this to a
natural opening in the north west of the cavern. As they enter the opening the ceiling here is
only 5 ft in height. They travel for 35 feet until they reach another opening
into a new cavern. Here there is a floor 5 ft up from where they stand. It it
now cuts a 5 ft deep trench through the cavern. A huge water wheel can be seen
part way in the trench, which proceeds out of the cavern’s north end. Those taller than 5 ft in the party can see that corpses of
dwarves and orcs litter the floor here as well. The party unties themselves
from the rope now and continue to enter the new cavern: A blast furnace
and a mechanical bellows powered by a waterwheel dominate this large chamber.
The furnace is cold and dark, but heaps of coal are piled nearby, along with
carts full of unrefined ore. The waterwheel sits in a ten-foot-wide channel cut
into the floor of the room, but the channel is dry. Passages exit to the west,
south, and east. The empty channel exits to the north and east.
More than a dozen withered corpses are
scattered around the room. These slain dwarves and orcs are still wearing the
remnants of their armor. Floating above them is a skull engulfed in green
flame. [As a side note: Barium, boron, copper, thallium and tungsten
give off a green flame, though copper is more of a blue-green.] Marcuria says, “Lovely, more corpes. We got company I think. I
hate the undead”. Flameskull says, “Halt! Who dares to trespass here”! Marcuria says, “Depends, who’s asking”?
Floating closer to the party Flameskull says, “It is I whom
speaks and you should not be here! Turn around and go back from whence you
came, I warn you”!
