How to measure distance on a move?

I searched around for a way to measure distance when moving a token, and I found a few threads that said that hitting the space bar while dragging a token will reveal the distance (example thread here: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1602786/is-there-any-way-to-measure-on-move ) . However, when I try this in a rest game I've set up, it doesn't appear to be working. The most recent thread I could find about this was about 2 years old, so I assume this feature may have changed?

If you start to drag a token, *then* press Q, it should measure distance from origin. If you press Q too early, it will switch to the measure tool, which you don't want. You can also repeatedly press Q at various squares/hexes to create waypoints the token will follow when dropped. Can't remember if any of this requires advanced shortcuts to be enabled or not.

Awesome, that works! It's just as described in the other threads, just with the Q key instead of space. Thank you so much!

Spacebar was the shortcut until a few years ago. You were probably looking at an old thread. Best place to find up-to-date documentation is the Help center or the Community Wiki.

I poked around in the wiki and help center for this originally, but wasn't able to find it. Going back to it now, knowing what the answer was, I could find a bit in the description of the ruler that says the Q hotkey will add a waypoint to a measurement, but I wasn't able to find anything in the sections for select & pan, tokens, ruler or general hotkeys that this feature exists.

Well, the wiki has it both on the keyboard shortcuts page and the one specific to the ruler. Probably just missed it as you were passing through. https://wiki.roll20.net/Keyboard_Shortcuts https://wiki.roll20.net/Ruler

It's in the general hotkeys page in the Help Center: And here on the Ruler page: It's not a select & pan or token feature, so I'm not surprised it isn't in either of those places.

Sniped by Kraynic. I knew I shouldn't have pressed the Snooze button this morning.

Right, the "Q to do a waypoint while measuring" shortcut isn't the thing I was originally looking for. "Q to turn on measurement when moving a token" is the feature that doesn't appear to be documented (or if it is, isn't very findable). I'm just glad the community here is reliably quick to answer stuff like this when it does come up though.

That is because you have to enable the advanced shortcuts in your game settings to have access to that hotkey. It is listed in the wiki page for that setting (and I think you can also find it by clicking the little "i" next to the setting in game). https://wiki.roll20.net/Advanced_Shortcuts

The Q shortcut to enable measurement on dragging a token isn't listed on that page, and it works in the game I was testing it in even without advanced shortcuts enabled (I just popped back in to check and confirmed it).

It looks like all the versions of ruler are listed on the chart to me. That is interesting that it works for you, because q does not switch me from the pointer/select tool to the ruler unless I have that option checked in my games.

Ah, no, sorry, I think my description of the problem was at fault. It's not that Q switches to the ruler, it's that hitting Q while dragging a token causes a ruler popup under the token while you move, so you can see how far you're moving it. Once that's there, additional Q presses work just like the Q shortcut for the basic ruler. It's useful for complex moves and a huge help if you're not snapping movement to a grid. The only bit that seems to be undocumented is that initial ruler popup; everything else works the way you describe.
