New to the Genre? Read this blurb: Before you play, you need to understand the period we're entering, and the reasons for this unsettling horror. This is the period post WW1, or after the war to end all wars. Humanity has just re-discovered that we became extremely efficient at killing one another and the sheer brutality of our imagination. Author's like Lovecraft saw the birth of U-boats, poison bombs, machine guns, flamethrowers, and the atrocities of Trench Warfare. All of which is the vehicle for this unbridled fear he brings into his works – knowledge. To quote Lovecraft . . The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. This game, is built on the foundations of a known unknown, or Cosmic Horror – a type of horror that doesn't just get its kicks from jump scares or horrendous extremities and jibbering maws. This horror deals with episodes of psychosis, it toys with your rationale, and allows you to form your own nihilistic conclusions of what is to come. Knowledge within this medium crawls like a fidgeting hand across your tireless brain. This knowledge is dangerous, and the more of it you know - the far less likely you are to survive. This is not a game of heroics and you will find your limitations quickly. You must use your wits to temporarily fend off certain doom before it engulfs everything. And because this is a saga; your actions do indeed have consequences within further episodes. (I haven't lost you have I? . . . Excellent.) Game Info Background Investigation: Paper Chase (Pre-generated) System: Call of Cthulhu 7e Time Expected: 3 – 4 hours Investigators: 1 – 2 Communication: Discord / Voice Challenge Rating: Easy (2 – 3) Synopsis You have been contracted by Thomas Kimball of Michigan. It seems his house has been burglarized and some of his uncle’s favorite books have been stolen. The mystery is a little unusual, as the uncle inexplicably disappeared without trace a year ago. Mr. Kimball would like you to find out who stole the books, return them if possible, and discover the whereabouts of his uncle and whether he is still alive. Location 1920s Port Huron, Michigan: Within this scenario you will be in the county of St. Clair, Michigan in a small rural town of Port Huron. An average population of 25,000 and very well known for its imports across the Great Lakes to New York. Michigan is not known for its summer weather as it's rather a thickening dampness that encapsulates the heat around you. Often sending many plunging into the icy Lakes to cool off. 'Juice' is prohibited, and because it is the mid-west – expect those God-bearing Christians to be very mindful of your presence. Luckily you'll have some breathing room in the near abandoned neighborhood where the Kimball estate awaits your speculations. Themes Corkscrew boards, newspaper clippings, ventures into the 'sticks', graveyards, conspiracy, and simple folk. Optional Precursor/Background: bbbbbRING! . . . bbbbbRING! . . . CLICK ". . . Good morning, you have a long distance connection from Miskatonic University – a Professor W. Peaslee from Psychology. Please hold while I switch the line." kerCLUCK "Peaslee, pleased to make your acquittance. I realize our connections are a bit informal as we speak, but it should rectify itself in time. I assure while my name is nothing but headline to you, your name has reached my desk." A paper unfolds itself, leading to a momentary pause. "I must be very diligent about the language I use, and so I request that you only listen. I have work for talent such as yourself and jobs most peculiar. Your expenses will be allocated through the university, and compensation will be more than favorable. If you are able to, take a sick day and find yourself on the Drummond ferry to Port Hudson. A small foot locker in Section 2b will carry the essentials of my ask. Fulfill your task and if the work interests you, there is more to be had." An audible buzzing creates static between the connections, the professor's tone slowly encrypting his speech as he says ". . . there are quite a few worker bees this time of year; drawn to the fruit of one's labor. Be mindful you don't bite into one or you might anger the swarm." kerCLUCK The line draws dead leaving one with a choice; are answers that important ? Application Please post a 'Listing Discussion' topic below with the following pieces of information. . . Player A blurb about yourself Character Investigator's Name Occupation Colleges, Degrees Birthplace Background Table Rules/Myself Myself: Experienced DM/Keeper of over 12+ years, mainly playing Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, and 5e. I generally play more to the story/role-play encounters but have more than enough experience with skills/combat to appease that crowd as well. - I have a general rule of thumb: "Be nice, and have fun! But not at the expense of others." This is a game, and we're here to have fun – please keep it civil. - I am a horrible drawer, but that doesn’t stop me from trying! - I am a firm believer in puns, and irony - users beware. - I do voices; and hope you will too! - I use Discord primarily - PVP is allowed, however you need the consent of both members Out-of-character (OOC) before pursuing your "duel." - Rule discussions will take place after the game; only taking priority in the game if it is a question or misinterpreted with a quick turnaround. If it isn’t a consensus I will make a best judgement call, and move on. Lastly, I am doing this because I find enjoyment in getting people into the hobby or giving other DMs/Keepers a break from generating content. I work full-time, and care for my little one. This is my favorite past-time and want to share my passion, thus this is all FREE! (Thanks for reading. . .!) For more details, please contact me! (PM works best!)
