Sabrina's notes and inner monologue - Return to Borin's Folly 13 Marpenoth This mission seemed like a Monastery reunion tour , Blaze, Aoibhinn and Nadia were here to tackle something perhaps a little easier than a disgruntled wind spirit. There were a few new faces to the group: a Tiefling called Plank and Borin a former dwarf now Goliath. Might I add Nadia strolled in late to the party looking worse for wear. She decided to get some augmentation done and isn’t quiet up to full health yet – what a fucking liability. We headed off into the swamp which had run afoul of some unnatural winter. I can’t complain, I’m very toasty in Fergal’s old winter clothes. Heading along the western road, it must have been around the afternoon where Borin noted some figures in the distant snow. Bullywugs and giant toad’s tried to get the jump on us! The surprise attack caused us to be disorganised and sloppy in our counterattack. We all came out alive, but we can’t afford to make the same mistakes again. Tactics is something we needed to discuss over camp that evening.   14 Marpenoth I’ve walked past Borin’s Folly a few times now, but never actually gone into the settlement. It looks like it has been taken over by something reptilian, although we didn’t see anything aside from fiery undead. Borin seemed to recognise them. As for what happened here; he doesn’t remember the fine details I’ve noticed. Entering the forge on the other side of town, the heat was nearly unbearable. A river of molten lava flowed below two broken bridges which spanned the deathly chasm. The group decided to brave it and jump the first (and the most broken) bridge. Yeah, I’m going to Misty Step over thank-you very much. The sounds from everyone jumping alerted everything in the area to our presence. Every creature looked like it was made of fire – Blaze looked happy (I don’t know why though, nearly his entire repertoire of spells is useless down here). I nearly exhausted myself trying to keep fire newts and mephits at bay. Plank took a lot of fire damage like a champ and Borin looked like he got very badly hurt . Blaze also received a scar across his face, said something about looking good for ‘fire’ chicks. We fought until there was one left. A warlock, who wisely surrender and begged for mercy. He said that he and his people weren’t responsible for the fiery undead on the surface. He claims that his leader; a high priest of Kossuth was trying to summon an ice god to fight the evil fire spirit which was the true cause of all the mayhem. There are also the usual promises of treasure and power etc… We are believing the little fire turd for now and going to meet this high priest. I believe the rationalisation of this is that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

After Action Report Party composition:  Aoibhinn, Nadia, Plank, Sabrina, Blaze, Borin Mission: A) Investigate Borin's Folly Route Taken:  Hope - Borins Folly Enemy Contacts:   Bullywug ambush en route to Borrins folly: 3 Bullywug Brutes, 2 Toads, 1 Bullywug Shaman - All eliminated. Borin's Folly: 2 Skeletons, 2 Zombies, 1 Burning Hand - All eliminated. Inside the Forge: 2 Fire Imps, 3 Magma Mephits, 5 Firenewt Warriors, 3 Fire Wolves, 2 Fire Snakes, 1 Firenewt Warlock.  Parley negotiated with Firenewt Warlock. All other enemies eliminated.                   Enemy Notes:   Undead in the town - immune to fire and cold Burning hands - resistent to fire, cold and common weapons Reptillian footprints noted in the village. Lizardfolk? All creatures inside the forge are immune to fire Casualties:  None Mission Outcome:   A) In progress.   Recommendations:  We have negotiated with the Firenewt to meet their leader, a High Priest of Kossuth. Apparently they are having trouble with an evil god down here and aren't responsible for the attacks in the village. If we offer assistance they are willing to co-exist peacefully with settlers on the surface.  Recommend meeting the High Priest to offer assistance / negotiate peaceful re-settlement of Borin's Folly.  Recommend investigating the reptillian footprints seen in the village on the surface. These creatures may represent a secondary threat to the settlement.   Personel Reflection:   I have to get back to Hope to prepare for the Ettinheight expedition, however I should be able to convince Burglekutt to come out here and provide assistance. His arcane knowledge may help with this situation.
Back to the Forge - Borin's thoughts Blessed Lathander, ah dinnae ken why I was oot here in the wilds but mebbe ma purpose begins to reveal itself… Ah joined up with a bunch of capable looking sorts even if ah dinnae truly remember any of them. The pyromaniac Blaze seems all too keen to reach the Forge. When ah look at him, ah see flashes of flame… and pain… ah dinnae think he knows what he’s walking towards. The lassie Nadia seems dangerous and keen. The shadows are her friend it seems but she’s done great damage to herself with those “augmentations”. Ah patched her up a little before we went too far but who can say how well she’ll hold up. Aoibhinn ’s skill with a weapon seems impressive, ah hope it’s more than just show. Sabrina seems happy in her (frankly oversized) winter clothing. The four of them seem very at ease with each other, as if they have travelled together many times and faced many dangers. I assume they are good at their jobs or else they wouldn’t still be alive… if we survive the Forge, maybe I can travel to some of the places they’ve seen. The final member of the group is a friendly Teifling named Plank . He seemed pleased to see me “alive” and his face is familiar somehow. It feels comforting but also evokes memories of teeth and pain somehow… my lungs almost catch fer breath when ah think too long… The winter winds seem unnatural to the group but they seem to remind me of ma homeland… but ah cannae place any details aboot what that means. Ah have no memory of “home” beyond vague notions. The phrase “Stonehill Strangers” pops into ma head but it doesn’t make much sense. Fortunately, I was distracted from these fleeting memories by the presence of a vicious surprise attack launched on the party by Bullywugs and Giant Toads. Plank was lit up like a campfire by their shaman and chased them all over the surrounding area before killing them. We succeeded but were probably sloppier than we should have been. Lathander guide us through the worst and give us the strength to learn from our mistakes We have arrived. The village itself shows little sign of life although our scouts pick up plenty of “reptilian” footprints in the area so something is active here. Undead filth burst out of one of the buildings. Their faces seemed familiar to me but they are not the people ah once knew, even if ah could remember who they truly were. We cleansed the village of their presence - much more effectively than the previous day - and prepared to travel back into the fiery depths below. Ah’d forgotten the heat… it is oppressive. Pushing forward, we found a gap across some lava and decided to leap across instead of scouting further. We succeeded in finding a busy middle chamber before all hells broke loose. Soon, we were beset on all sides by fiery creatures. Some no more than vicious beasts while some possessed wicked cunning. Plank and Nadia pressed forward and wreaked pretty havoc on the enemy but we were exposed to the North as spellcasters engaged with Sabrina and Aoibhinn in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Blaze held the rear against wave after wave of foe. Displaying immense toughness against seemingly endless enemies. Gradually we wore them down until one of their kind threw down it’s arms and begged for mercy. The Firenewt claims they are worshippers of Kossuth and are here to battle a great evil. They do not seem to be responsible for the fall of the village above and if his words are true, then maybe we should ally here to purge this place together. We go to meet their high priest shortly, although many of us could use a wee breather first! As ah sit here, ma hand rubs against the smooth side of ma head and ah remember a skinny lassie who danced a merry dance o’death and ah see tiger stripes and a little girl… whatever happened to Azymeth or Siberius or Abigail… ACH, there’s nae time to dwell on fuzzy memories, we have ter clear this accursed place!!
