Curse of Strahd is a gothic vampire horror story. It begins in a haunted house module called Death House. We are organizing a party to eradicate Strahd Von Zarovich from Barovia.
The players operate guilds that train new adventurers who take residence in Adventurer's Quarter. Everyone starts out at Level 1 and completes a training mission to get to Level 2. There are a number of Guilds available to offer training and missions that characters will need to get to Level 3.
Characters can join side quests and campaigns to get the XP necessary to get to Level 5. Once a Character is at Level 5, they can choose to join or organize a new Guild with a level 12 Guild Master NPC.
I have run over 300 characters through the "Goblin Hole" here in Obsidian Bay. This one shot adventure is a tricky tactical cave that teaches the basics of squad tactics, 3/4 cover, and the importance of minions. The City Guards will punch anyone in the face for claiming that there are Goblins in Obsidian Bay. Someone keeps stocking up the goblins in the goblin hole.
For most adventurers new to the big city, The Welcome Wench Inn is an easy hook. Ostler Gundigoot has been around adventurers since the days of the Temple of Elemental Evil. I play Gundigoot as the embodiment of what Gary Gygax meant to those of us who wanted to give life to a fantasy universe.
Behind the Welcome Wench is Druid's Grove. Nearby is the Poorman's Guild. The City Guard fights bandits held up in remote moat houses, and then holds the territory by rebuffing future attacks. Rogues practice their art through sleight of hand and stealth missions. There is an underground fight club below the Black Blade and Bloody Boar that our characters often fight in for profit. We have developed functional ship to ship combat. Shipping is necessary for our black market health potion facility. We have a wide range of milestone adventures that have been thoroughly play tested in this open world.
If you can tell me what your character is needing, I'll develop something unique for them. I want to be your Dungeon Master. If you agree to this contract, I promise to always stay one step ahead of your character's narrative, while allowing the dice to decide the ultimate fate. My players learn to fight as a unit with flanking tactics for advantage, and how to fully embody the individuality of their character. I pay close attention to the balance between individual and party dynamics. Everyone gets to be the protagonist of a scene at some point. Every story that I write is waiting for you to fill in the blanks.
"Just because you are a character doesn't mean you have character" The Wolf - Pulp Fiction (Tarantino, 1994)
I am a Dungeon Master with a film degree. Dan Harmon's Story Circle concept is a useful way to apply Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces theory to TTRPG.
Dan Harmon, Writer of Rick and Morty, Community, and HarmonQuest has developed a theory that he applies in his writing.
1:) A character is in a place of COMFORT
2:) But they WANT something
3:) So they go somewhere WEIRD
4:) ADAPT to it
5:) They GET what they wanted
6:) But they have to PAY
7:) They RETURN
8:) Having CHANGED
Every game that I run focuses on your character's development using this theory. This makes my games feel more like a Rick and Morty episode than a video game.
I am the Executive Producer, Director and co-writer of your story.
We roll for stats. The standard array produces a total of +5 modifiers for a character before racial adjustments are made. By analyzing the rolled stats in game before racial modifiers, we produce a Global Privilege Modifier based on their deviation from the standard array norm of +5. This encourages low stat characters and punishes high stat characters. The universe feels bad for casting a flawed hero and helps them when it can.
I charge $10 / session for paid games. Once a player has been accepted by the core group, they will be offered payment arrangements on an individual basis. Most players pay $20 every two weeks for unlimited sessions. Scheduled games are prepaid. The DM will run characters for players who do not make prior arrangements. (poorly)
Let's game.
I take complaints from players seriously. Anyone who ruins other people's experience will have a very short life in my games.
