In Search of the Unknown 🗝 🏹 🔮

Hello and welcome adventurers. The Known World awaits you. From roaming beasts, to forgotten ancient ruins, from hamlets to cities, the Known World is a dangerous land of monsters, traps, curses, politicians, bandits, the elements, and diseases. Above it all, treasure calls out to be claimed. Most who answer the call meet their end. Will you?

This game will use the D&D Rules Cyclopedia, and optionally, some of the GAZ books. I want to try and recapture the feeling of old style of D&D, where cunning and luck are needed to survive. Civilization is scattered and sparse, and dangerous in it's own right.

While I won't be trying to kill off the characters, death is likely to occur, and players need to be ready for it. Traps may be deadly, monster attacks can fell an adventurer, and poisons or spells may instantly kill them.

This will be a campaign, meeting weekly on Sundays at 3:00 pm Eastern. We'll play for 4 hours, with a 5-10 minute break around mid-session. We'll use Discord for voice. The game will have visual and sound effects, as well as maps and music.

House Rules and Optional Rules will be detailed in a post below, and anything not covered we can discuss.

The game is open to new players, both to RPGs generally, and this D&D edition. However, for people new to RPGs, I must stress that PvP actions, "messing with" other players, stealing from them, etc is not really welcome. It makes people angry and ruins games. Also, wildly chaotic actions (acting crazed) can ruin immersion.

What I am looking for in players:

  • Have a good headset, where we don't hear background noise or our voice echoing. Push-to-talk alone is not sufficient, since we inevitably speak at the same time.
  • Friendly discussion and treatment of me and the other players. If you disagree on a ruling, we can talk about it, but if you're angry, drop it and wait until you aren't. If you get upset in the game, let us know that you need to step away for a bit, and come back when you've relaxed.
  • Have access to the Rules Cyclopedia. It's available in PDF form from DriveThruRPG, or maybe acquire it some other way. I won't upload my copy, as it has a watermark with my name, and it's illegal to do so.
  • Be able to attend most of the sessions. Sometimes things come up, and you can't make it. If possible, please let us know you won't make a session when you find out. The biggest thing that kills games, or kills the momentum in games, is player absence (or gm absence). Also, no one is obliged to stay in a game they don't enjoy, but please let me know if you're dropping from the game. I won't pester you to stay, or bother you about why you're dropping. If you want to talk about what isn't working, we can, I just like to know, so I won't be surprised on game day.
  • Let others do stuff. Sometimes players want to do everything, but we need everyone to get a chance at taking actions, and trying different ideas. There's a balance between being too passive in the game, and too active. Often, it's best for the group to discuss actions before deciding what to do, and getting input from each person.
  • Tell me what you intend to do. Don't just roll a macro, but instead say what and how you're trying to do something, and I'll say what to roll (or you can hint at what you'd like to roll). Sometimes this isn't needed, such as in obvious situations like "I want to swing my sword".
  • Be over 25 years old. I'm in my mid 30's, and I think it'll just be a bit easier if I play with old people.
  • Read this listing before applying :)

We'll be playing in the Known World in the Mystarra setting. I don't know it very well, though I bought some of the GAZ books, and will take a look. I also am not overly familiar with the Cyclopedia rules, having run a few sessions, and played in a few more. If I get something wrong, the best way to correct me is to say that RAW is different, and point out a page and paragraph.

If this appeals to you, please make an application post below, and then I may talk to you on Discord (mostly a mic check, but also to discuss any questions, and see if we hate each other :)
