Our games have been rated the "Most Fun" on the internet.*

We record our sessions and post information about our games for our players.
Try to not watch any videos from levels that you haven't cleared yet. Our games are hardcore; they feature solid RP with high stakes battle tactics in an open world. I do not roll behind a screen. The role playing scenarios of our games are infinitely more challenging than the battle scenes. We workshop all of our backstories and produce them here in this game.

Who am I?

I care about creating epic adventures. I care about helping every player achieve their vision for their character. I care about creating a world that we can all dream of. I do everything I can to create an environment that supports everyone involved.

I approach the game using tools I learned in Film School (SIU, Cinema & Photography 2014). Everything that happens before we start recording a session is pre production. I use the same tools I used to deconstruct Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress (1953, Tohoscope) to develop my encounters. Every D&D game should feel like a vignette from a film.

What makes a game successful is the relationship between players and Dungeon Master. Is Matt Mercer a great DM, or are his players great players? It takes both sides of the equation to make the magic of D&D happen. I have high expectations for what it means to say that we are playing D&D. Based on feedback from players, I feel confident saying that we play great D&D here.

I begin your story right where your backstory left off. Some characters never end up meeting any other characters in our games. Every hook I work with has been custom made for the character I offer it to. Your character is part of a larger production. Your character needs more than a DM, they need an executive producer. I am the Executive Producer, Writer/Director, GM/DM of Obsidian Bay. I publish our world on YouTube and I am looking for people who want to build compelling characters. I have been running this open world for the better part of a year now, and it provides an amazing backdrop for telling interesting stories through game play.

I am a Dungeon Master with a film degree. Dan Harmon's Story Circle concept is a useful way to apply Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces theory to TTRPG.

Dan Harmon, Writer of Rick and Morty, Community, and HarmonQuest has developed a theory that he applies in his writing.

1:) A character is in a place of COMFORT
2:) But they WANT something
3:) So they go somewhere WEIRD
4:) ADAPT to it
5:) They GET what they wanted
6:) But they have to PAY
7:) They RETURN
8:) Having CHANGED

What D&D is: We are writing a film about your adventure and shooting the action sequences first.
Let's game.

How does a player join late?

Every new player gets to participate in a session 0. My session 0's are opportunities for all of the characters in the game to check in with the group about what they are experiencing, who they are completely frustrated with, who they want to murderkill, and how they expect to pay the bills. We review wants, bonds and skills using Roll20's tools. My players are always ready to do a session 0 for a new player. We usually have NPC's available, or you could just fall from the sky. If you join any of our games, you will feel like you jumped in at the perfect time. I have been running a Homebrew world on Roll20 long enough to recognize a few patterns.

Rules

I take complaints from players seriously. Anyone who ruins other people's experience will have a very short life in my games. Anyone who tries to create a contest between player and DM will be silenced on Discord immediately. We deal with our issues with authority in game, not in meta.

You will be invited directly into our voice channel. You will be considered the younger brother who showed up in my room uninvited until you can demonstrate otherwise. Welcome to Obsidian Bay.

*Not actually a provable claim.
