Tales of the Yawning Portal (Dragonlance)

NOTE: THIS IS A CONVERSION OF THE TALES OF THE YAWNING PORTAL HARDCOVER INTO THE DRAGONLANCE SETTING. I will be adding significant amounts of "story bits" inbetween adventures, but the nature of the book means that a lot of time will be spent in dungeon crawls.

(Day & Time currently a placeholder. If you are interested in this game, please let me know what day & time would be best for you, so that I can try to finalize a group that can all meet regularly)

(This Campaign will NOT follow the established canon from the year 348 going forward. Elements for this campaign will be borrowed from the Legends series and other sources, but expect many canon events to be altered or ignored completely)

In the year 353 A.C, and the War of the Lance has just ended. Takhisis' plans for conquest have been thwarted for now, true clerics are returning to the land, and the Master of Past and Present, Raistlin Majere, is sequestered in the Tower of High Sorcery in Palanthas. The war is over, but there is still much work to be done before the world can truly be at peace. Heroes are still needed.

At the Shadow of Dragons Inn, in Palanthas, a group of young friends who grew up together in the city now gather. Inspired by the tales of the Heroes of the Lance and called by a mysterious patron who promises travel, the opportunity for heroism, and not insignificant rewards along the way.

  • Will run 3 - 4 hours on gameday starting at XPM EST (except for holidays, etc)

  • The tone of this Campaign is heroic fantasy. Murder hobos need not apply. Thematically, the game is meant to be something of a mirror to the story of the Heroes of the Lance, but on a smaller scale. It is a story of unsung heroes who struggle against similarly difficult odds, but in less history making ways.

  • Players will be asked to incorporate their characters into the initial setup for the game, with the heroes being friends who have known one-another for some time, and share a bond of loyalty to one another, even if they don't always agree.

  • The game will be plot & character driven, with a likely 60/40 or even 70/30 split between role-play and combat. Play trumps mechanics here (to both the positive and negative effect, depending on how you play)

  • I will use a mix of maps and "theater of the mind" for combat, leaning toward the latter when the terrain isn't really a factor and/or the combat should be over fairly quickly.

  • All players are expected to create characters appropriate to the Campaign, with motivation to participate in adventures beyond profit & mayhem

  • Voice is a requirement, and I use Discord (free download)

About Me
My name is Tedd (aka WildKnight or WK). I'm 41 years old and I've been DM/GMing for over 25 years in a variety of systems, including just about every iteration of D&D. What brings me back to the table time and again is the cooperative storytelling aspect of roleplaying. I've been running D&D 5 since it released (and did the "D&D Next" playtest material before that), and for the most part, I'm fairly happy with the rules, though there are some issues, as there always are with any system. As you'll see if you continue to the character creation materials, I use a significant amount of homebrew material.

I do have a family, so there may be situations other than holidays that require me to miss sessions. Obviously if a missed session is on me, you are not required to pay for it (and if you've already paid, I'll refund it or credit you for the next session, whichever you choose)

What I expect from you;
- Payment to be made at least 24 hours prior to the session. f you're going to miss a session, please let me know 24 hours ahead of time so that I can adjust

  • Try to show up 10 - 15 minutes early so that we can ensure that sound is working, etc.

  • Be courteous to other players, and respect their spotlight time. If you feel you're not getting enough spotlight time, please speak to me outside of game time

  • If you disagree with a rules call that I make, please take it up with me outside of game time.

  • If you have an issue with another player, please speak to me about it before taking it public and/or simply quitting the game. I've found that generally these things can be dealt with if handled properly.

  • In-character disagreements may occur, but respect for other players is not negotiable.

Character Creation
See race & class information below, before starting work on a character. Please make every effort to see to it that your character fits the tone and feel of the campaign.

Attributes: Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or 27 point buy (PHB page 13)

Backgrounds: I do allow customization of backgrounds, however they must be built on the base of an existing background, and you cannot change the feature ability, starting equipment, or starting gold. You may select any two skill proficiencies, and any combination of two languages, tool proficiencies, or instrument proficiencies.

You may sell starting equipment before play, but receive only one-half the original value.

See below for other character creation elements.
