A New Bloodsport

Greetings, Operator.

You’ve come a long way, and we’ve been watching.

Originally, they were grown for medicinal use.
It started with the vat-born “homunculi”: Biotech creatures engineered to be custom-made organ-donors for the wealthy and affluent; mindless constructs created to facilitate longer lifespans for those who could afford them.

All tech leads to military application.
The “Kaiju Project” bred titanic vat-born battle-golems which were quickly outlawed by the Pact-Worlds. These “Kaiju” were seen as the ultimate expression of biological warfare. Their creation and use was deemed unethical, and all known “Kaiju” assets were destroyed. The project was quickly erased from public record, but the technology of their creation and control was not lost.

The rise of The Dragons.
The Seven Dragons, underworld masters of excessively violent Yakuza shadow-governments, acquired the “Kaiju Project” technologies. Rather than risking a war with the governments of the pact worlds, they found another use for the vat-born.

The Yokai.
All cultures eventually succumb to bloodlust.
All great societies inevitably build their own coliseums.
All people need champions, gladiators, warriors, and villains.

The Seven Dragons fulfilled this need. In the dark and unmonitored corridors, they built their “Yokai Pits,” lawless arenas in which “Operators” use unlicensed magitech to possess and control mindless vat-born horrors in deathmatch combat.

Three Rules:

“No Tech.”
(Only Biotech is tolerated. No implants, no weapons, no magic, no metal, no exceptions.)

“No Interference.”
(Only the “Yokai” are allowed in the Pit.)

“No Mercy.”
(Defeat is Death.)

A tournament.
The Seven Dragon-Lords have commissioned a ship unlike any other. In equal partnership, they have funded the construction of the greatest arena ever built:

The Jigoku, A Colossal Luxury-Liner which houses an unprecedented battle-biome, the largest Yokai Pit of all.

Teams of operators are being formed, four Yokai to a team. Seven teams will ascend to the Jigoku to vie for the ultimate prize. This great tournament will be broadcast for all to see.

You are cordially invited.
You have labored hard to create your Yokai.

Whether wealthy or struggling, you’ve managed to engineer a monster worthy of glorious combat. Now is the time to prove yourself. Those who catch the eye of The Dragons will be elevated.

The Jigoku Beckons…

Welcome to the Pit!

The Storyteller
My name is Steve. I'm a 25-year veteran of the tabletop RPG community (mostly D&D and Exalted,) and I’m running a Starfinder campaign here on Roll20 which may be the game you’re looking for.

The Inspiration
I have based this game heavily on the short story “Sonnie’s Edge” by author Peter F. Hamilton, recently adapted as an animated short in the Netflix series “Love, Death, Robots”. (Trigger Warning: It’s intended for mature audiences, containing all manner of adult themes…)

I would suggest that any interested players read the story, which can be found here for free by the publishers of the novel:

Theme and Mood
I should start by saying that this game MAY contain dark themes, mature content, graphic violence, adult language, NSFW imagery, and all manner of disturbing ideas. This will depend largely on the players, their comfort levels, and a pre-established negotiated arrangement for everyone at the table. I treat this arrangement with utmost seriousness, violations will not be tolerated.

Communication and Combat
We will use Discord for voice chat, and Roll20 for combat.

Making an Operator (Character)
Operators will be built by the group during "session zero," the first time we meet to play. I prefer to have character creation be a group effort, to promote group cohesion and avoid disinterest in other players. There will be three players and an NPC (who will fill whatever role the group needs...) Operator / Yokai.

I highly encourage the players to consider who they want to play, before they decide what they want to play. Create a concept. We'll worry about the numbers when we all meet and talk a bit.

Due to the methods used to Operate, only human characters will be allowed.
This is not to limit your creativity, but to ensure that each player has the same baseline to work with. If the group would like to negotiate this, I'm open to it. When applying for the game, assume you'll be playing a human character.

Things to consider when creating a concept for your Operator:

  • What is your name?
  • How old are you?
  • Where are you from?
  • How did you come to understand and manipulate the forbidden bio-genetic technologies used to create a mindless monstrosity bred for the criminal Yakuza-run underground combat pits? (Or did someone else grow your vat-born..?)
  • What is your greatest weakness? (The Dragons care about these things...)
  • What is your greatest strength or talent?
  • Why are you an Operator?

There will be many more questions as we build your characters, but for now, try to get at least this much figured out...

(Please understand: If something you've written into your concept doesn't work in the context of the game, you will be asked to change or abandon it. I will try not to do this too much, but I'd prefer a cohesive group, not a gaggle of a**holes who can't stand one another...)

Making a "Yokai"
I will work with players to create their character's Yokai. We will use the Pathfinder Simple Monster Creation rules found on D20PFSRD:

https://bit.ly/2U7enXq

We will likely be skipping steps 3, 4, 6, and 8. (For those who want a head start...)

I will work with each of the three players to design their Yokai. Naturally, I reserve the right to make all final decisions about the creation of the monsters used in my game, but I will do my best to assure that your Yokai reflects what you want it to be.

Thank You

I appreciate the time you've taken to read and consider this explanation. I will include an "Operator Applications" forum topic below, and I encourage anyone interested to fill out the template and apply!
