Magical Space Pirates on a Voyage of Discovery.
Thousands of tiny worlds float in the Heavens above Sammathar. Collectively called Stars, Moons or Planets, these islands are worlds unto themselves suspended in what sages call the Astral Sea. Astronomers divide the Astral Sea into Constellations, such as the Magician, the Crown or the Fortress. Among the most vital is the Constellation of the Tiger.
Until recently, three Empires claimed the Tiger. The oldest are the Vampires, who have held their Blood Moons since the Ghoul King reigned on Sammathar, centuries ago. They were discovered by the Elven Protectorate, who placed the entire star system under their jurisdiction. Half a century ago the Pantheonic Alliance was born, a mess of unrelated religions united only in their opposition to the Elves and Vampires. It later evolved into the Pantheonic Republic and declared a number of worlds free from Elven Protection. Already at war with the Blood Moons, the Elven Protectorate declared war on the rebel Republic.
The Tiger Wars lasted twelve years, but ended abruptly with the appearance of the Beholder Mothership. An immense Space Hulk from beyond the Heavens, it represented a threat far greater than anything the warring navies could handle. The Elves and the Temples declared a ceasefire and the Vampires withdrew to their slave worlds. The Beholder Mothership continued to drift through the Tiger, before without warning, it exploded and rained shards across the Constellation. A few brave souls explored the scattered wrecks. Some found great wonders of magical technology, but most found madness and death.
The already complicated situation became worse with the invasion of the Kreen. Mantis-like warriors from a distant Constellation, they swiftly conquered a chain of outer Stars and began constructing an immense Hive. Weakened by the Tiger Wars, neither the Elves nor Temples were able to contain them. The Kreen have begun converting two more Stars into Hive worlds. It would seem their expansion is unstoppable.
This web of tension has caught a buffet of Bounty Hunters, Tomb Raiders, Mercenaries, Mystics, Scoundrels, Princesses and Missionaries. The star system is a magnet for Spelljammers- space pirates that ply the trade routes between Stars. Spelljammers are independent, aiding, raiding and trading with whom they please. Many have no love for the Protectorate, no respect for the Republic and no fear of the Blood Moons. Others serve the Empires as privateers, plundering with impunity. Unable to strike each other without reigniting the Tiger Wars, Spelljammers make perfect proxies for seizing the Constellation.
You are a Spelljammer- or more specifically, you are a crew member aboard one. You answer only to the Captain, whose magic keeps you alive in the depths of the Astral Sea. You go where you please, ally with whom you wish and take what you want. Perhaps your vessel is filled with noble raiders who strike at slave barges destined for the Blood Moons. Perhaps you are colonists, seeking a fertile Star where you can build a new civilisation. Or maybe your ship has naught but rapists and thieves, slipping from one world to the next on a doomed campaign of murder and mayhem. The Tiger Constellation is yours.
