New players are welcome, but someone with a decent knowledge of the setting and events of Critical Role's first campaign (Up to the Chroma Conclave) is a big plus.
The Scales of Emon focus on a group of mercenaries who have remained in Emon to monitor unfolding events at the behest of their Ringleader.
Twelve years since the lauded heroes of Vox Machina put down the threat of the Chroma Conclave, much of Tal'Dorei has returned to its former prosperity. Though many old wounds are still visible upon Tal'Dorei's fair skin, much has also been restored, rebuilt. People from all walks have their daily struggles while the Council of Tal'Dorei does their best to administer to the land, and for the most part succeeds. Still, there are always those who toil, and always those who will take advantage. The world has sees its share of troubles recently, but has weathered it. Most recently, Yuan-Ti have invaded the Eastern wise of the continent.
Founded a few months after the Chroma Conclave, The Brass Dragon Circus and Traveling Sideshow brings entertainment and diversion to towns across the land. Acrobats, Animal tamers, Trapeze, High Wire, Knife Throwing, even clowns, there is something for everyone, all for a very reasonable price. But that's not all the circus has to offer...
The public face of the circus is a cover. Behind this mask, the circus is a band of mercenaries and thieves, selling their services. Wherever the circus goes, those who know the right people to seek out, and the right words to use, can hire the circus to do more than simply entertain. There are rules, limits to what jobs the Ringleader will accept: No murder-for-hire. No kidnap-for-ransom. No theft from those who cannot afford the loss. No exploitation of the common folk. But if you've the right job and the coin, the circus can help you.
Recent events have changed the circus, and the city of Emon. The old leaders have all retired, paving the way for a new leadership and a new circus. Asha the Moonlighter owns an inn in Emon and an estate in Emon's Cloudtop, bringing legitimacy and useful cover to the circus' activities. Helzaba the Ringmistress leads the Circus' legitimate entertainment business. Bree the Tempest leads the mercenaries, but still occasionally does her sensuous high-wire dance. Amelia the Phoenix handles logistics and tinkers with arcane solutions to aid the crews in their jobs.
The Yuan-Ti having evolved more elaborate means to infiltrate, Emon's new security measures prove more a hindrance to honest thieves just trying to make a living that to the monsters. Guards patrol with devices to help detect illusory disguises or shape-changing, and the practice has begun in all of Tal'Dorei's major cities.
The Scales came into play as the brainchild of circus' previous Ringleader. They have remained in Emon, taking up residence in the Central District, in the inn purchased by the circus, thought some later moved to the Cloudtop estate. They take jobs and monitor unfolding events in Tal'Dorei's capitol to ensure these developments don't interfere with the circus' jobs. The three crews in Emon take the jobs that come, working in relative peace now that they've forged a truce with The Clasp. They have the means to communicate with the main circus, but have little in the way of support with the circus so remote.
There are other crews, performing other jobs on other days of the week. Events and outcomes from one will affect all, and there's always the chance of meeting characters from the other sessions, or even the occasional crossover episode.
Look to your allies, and be wary of your rivals...
