Tales from the Loop

UPDATE

  • We are looking for a new player, to replace an existing player who had to leave due to a change in schedule.
  • This game has currently been running for four sessions. The players just finished their first, introductory mystery. Because we are in downtime, we will be able to introduce a new character.
  • The character types currently taken are: Weirdo, Computer Geek, Popular Kid, Bookworm, Troublemaker.
  • In other words, we are looking for one of the following: Hick, Jock, Rocker.
  • In addition, it is requested that the new player be willing to be friends with Russ, the troublemaker. He lost his best friend =(

About the game:

  • This is a Tales from the Loop game.
  • The premise of the game is “Troubled Kids solve mysteries in a Sci-Fi 1980s.” If you're familiar with Stranger Things, Stephen King's IT, The Goonies, or Goosebumps, you already have a good idea of what to expect.
  • This is a voice game. A working microphone is required. We don't use webcams.
  • We will be using Discord for voice, and between-session communication/banter.
  • Sessions will generally last between 2.5 and 3.5 hours, played every other week (1 week on, 1 week off)
  • The mysteries will be of my own creation (using your characters and backgrounds as launching points, likely) so if you've already played the published adventures, you can still play this game without worry.
  • I don't have the game marked as Mature Content (18+), but my group has expressed a preference for players who are older than 18.
  • The campaign will run as long as the players remain interested and I can come up with weird tales to subject you all to!
  • Beginners welcome :)

About the Setting

  • TFTL takes place in an alternate version of the 1980s. In many ways, the world of TFTL is our world: The same movies were in theaters, and people still listen to MJ on casette tape. But in some ways the world is way more advanced: Magnetrine ships sail the skies and robots roam the landscape.
  • The titular "Loop" is a high-energy particle accelerator facility on the outskirts of town, which may or may not be responsible for a host of unusual phenomeona. Strange creatures lurk in the woods behind the school. Ms. Johanson next door says Men in Black are spying on her. Your math teacher claims they can speak to aliens on her CB radio. The robots are starting to act strangely. In other words, the enivronment is ripe with mysteries to solve.
  • Even though the game takes place in the 1980s, I generally play fast and loose with dates. Nostalgia is more important than pin-point accuracy; I won't badger you if you reference something from 1989 when the game is supposed to be in 1988, or whatever.
  • Note for those familiar with TFTL: I won't be using either the Malaren Islands or Boulder City, instead we will be using a fictional town in the Appalachian mountains. Although I love the two settings in the book, I felt moving to a new location would "open up" the worldbuilding potential for us. That is the only major change I am making; everything but the location will be "true" to the setting.

Player Expectations:

  • Roleplay: You will be expected to act "in-character" and portray/describe your character's emotions. I'm intending this game to have a social element, so if you hate social roleplay this isn't your game.
  • Game Tone: I try to run games so that there's a variety of emotions: I hope there will be parts that are scary, parts that are funny, and parts that are moving. There are times where the game requires you to roleplaying being upset, or scared. The characters aren't invulnerable. The characters also aren't killers, or complete loners without families or friends. Remember, you are Kids in this game.
  • Content Warning: If this game were a movie, I'd say it's rated PG-13 or a light R: There's likely going to be violence, frightful imagery, and some foul language. If you have any particular concerns, message me.
  • Downtime Scenes: In between sessions, we will be roleplaying various "everyday" scenes and downtime scenes. These scenes may be flavor/slice-of-life, or they may be to advance an individual character's plot. This means there will be parts of certain sessions where you have to kick back and listen to other people roleplay. I understand that may not appeal to all, but I find the extra characterization well worth it.
  • Off-Topic Chatter: I am fine with off-topic chatter and joking around at the table. I, myself, am prone to going off on tangents and joking around a bit. But it's important that we can the off-topic chatter during serious moments. Also, our out-of-character chat can get pretty R-Rated, just so you know.
  • Stay in Touch: Between sessions, I appreciate if everyone checks into the Discord once or twice just to let us know you're still alive.
  • If you need to know more, I answered one of those "same-page tool" questionnaires about this game, you can see here: https://pastebin.com/SDyFpUtV If you have any more questions you can reach out to me, or ask in the applicaton thread

Above all else, we want to find eager, enthusiastic players who bring a good atmosphere to the table. :)
